  • My first time out with Swarovski Optik's new dG (digital guide) in Guatemala. The dG is a monocular device with a built-in snapshot camera and the possibility to pair it to a mobile phone. My favorite feature is the option to identify photos with the Merlin Photo ID app.

$1700 for half of a binocular at twice the price with a phone camera and google?
    How very swarovski!
I love their straight optics and have many, but the moment they step out of lane it is just odd.
Their first range finder for instance, the targeting was so large who knows what it was ranging?

A magnification power of 8 is not very powerful though, isn't it? or it's the clarity of the images that is superb? I currently use an old fashioned binocular of 7x35, and feel the image not good. Thanks!!

Until now, 8x magnification is my choice always for binoculars. It allows me to hand hold them more steadily and I use a scope for higher magnification. The dG uses the very good optics of the CL Pocket binoculars and adds the photo feature.

    This was just stupid.
It should have been like this instead: imgur.com/a/Jlcdpow
I have done this myself and just glued a small 8x25 monocular on my phone and then on my binocular.
then i sighted the phone+moncular in so it matched what i saw in my binocular.
That way you can still use the binoculars as usual.
Cant understand why a big company didnt do it like my idea.

The monocular part I can understand - but the Merlin App itself is actually totally free, and it can identify your birds with chirp samples (which works very well'), so don't completely give up on the app. Your normal photos can also be used to identify them, and you can go through a 5-step questionnaire (size, colors, location, etc) to identify birds that you could only see but not hear ot photograph. :)
The monocular seems very convenient when you haven't got a phone mount for your existing binoculars, but the price...
