Dude that play was so difficult. Scully must’ve been having a bad day, I couldn’t believe what he was saying. Don’t worry about that, real ballplayers know.

Really cool that you got to share the field with some greats on your Debut. First hit was off Greg Maddux and called by Vin Scully? Thats really something
Not the best outings for Maddux or Scully in their long careers. Maddux gives up a base hit on a rookie's first at bat, later slides very haphazardly into 2nd base nearly taking him out. Scully with the overly harsh description of the play off that blooper.
Matt, can you do a video where you simulate your carrer on out of the park baseball? You can select the year where you got drafted and then see your in game progression. Just an idea, I think it will be a good video.
Wow Scully was actually being a huge prick. That wasn’t a bad play lol just a well placed blooper wtf are you supposed to do. Dude was still talking about it in the 7th inning lmao
You have to understand something. The Dodgers infield during the 1980's set the record for errors, they were absolutely horrible, and Vin Scully had to go through all of that with the Dodgers. it all started in 1983 when Steve Sax had a phobia, that he had to throw a normal hit grounder in to the 25th row behind 1st Base. He sent 40 something into the stands, so i am guessing he's still getting over the shell shock of that time, even though it was 20 some years earlier.
You were sharp. I thought they were all good smart at bats. You were on everything and didn’t strike out. Didn’t look overmatched and it was your first MLB game. That’s awesome.
Thank you so much for this. Must have been an absolute mind warp to have your MLB debut at one of the iconic ballparks in sports against arguably one of the best 10 pitchers to ever live. Added to that of course is that you got to face two boyhood idols in Manny and Nomar and all the while got your first MLB knock. How did you ever fall asleep??? Please keep sharing your memories and stories...

I played high school ball, and am still good friends, with Jason Repko (#17 on the Dodgers) who had been called up this season as well by the Dodgers. It was funny to see him come into frame at the end of the game as the Dodgers are lining up to shake hands coming off the field. He went on to play parts of 7 seasons for the Dodgers, Twins, and Red Sox before playing a couple of years of independent ball and retiring. Pretty cool to see him in your big league debut.
Matt was WIRED this game 😂 Jumping on a slow grounder to second like it’s Game 7 of the World Series and sprinting to 2nd on the sacrifice like Jessie Owens in ‘36. Haha you’re the man, Matt!
Vin was roasting Matt because The Dodgers drafted Matt 1st and he didn’t sign , so Scully being The OG Dodger he is was & always will be (This from a REDS Fan. Vin was on his arss once he made a fielding blunder. Come on Rook! Got to love it though. That’s why Vin is The Man. His Loyalty is priceless.
I am not sure what that commentator was watching on that play. If you made that catch it is a SC top 10 play that night. He also called a chest high pitch "low and away" in your at bat. What a battle you had in that one at bat. That is a great debut in my opinion. Amazing. Thanks for walking us through it.
As a Taiwanese baseball fan, I've just following your TY and your films was great. Also surprised that you had facing one of the best Taiwanese lefty ever. He returned home and joined Taiwan league in 2015 for four more seasons. He retired in 2019 and now owning a restaurant and a gym.
That was a lot of fun to watch. I still remember when you made it to the big leagues. I used to work for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and was there when you were in Lake Elsinore. I saw you play a lot in the Cal League. I would always root for guys coming out of that league and still do to this day. Also, I was a huge Wally Joyner fan growing up, so that’s pretty awesome. 👍🏼
Pete Rose seemed to be able to remember every pitch he ever faced. Part way through this video I started to wonder whether you could too. Of course, I realize this is your first MLB game. So, the memories must be more vivid for that reason alone.
Matt, I played ball up at Salem State during my college years 2006-2010. Played with a few guys from your Peabody high school team (Palmeiri, Celantano, Melo). They would always talk about the beast that was Matt Antonelli. Good times man, good times.

Thanks for sharing! As a fan, it's cool to see your perspective re-watching this. Chavez Ravine is such a classic ballpark, then to have Manny, Nomar, Maddux, and Scully all involved, even to ground out to Broxton at the end... what an experience! Sorry you didnt keep the Nomar ball! I bet that's your main regret from this game.
Great play by play of your first game. How many weekend warrior, beer leaguers who say they played the game all their lives never really got a first game? Well done. Great memories, thanks for sharing!
Hey Matt, I know this is now kind of an old video that you put up here a few months ago so I don't know if you will see this, but I stumbled on to your channel and I have been literally binge watching all of your videos now for the past week. Just cannot get enough of all the cool, inside information and insights that you have and are so willing to share with us normal baseball fans. As a kid, baseball was my game, and I was pretty good but certainly not big league material...but I would have given anything to suit up and play in even just one major league game. So, after watching a bunch of your stuff, I had to search out the "major league debut" video. This is so awesome. You seem like such a great guy and since I did not know the outcome of this particular game, I was sitting here watching this and found myself pulling for you with every at bat...haha. I'm like "come on Matt, you got this...drill this guy's fastball right back through the mound". So awesome. The Vin Scully commentary on that play was totally unwarranted, but I guess it was a slow day for Vin so he needed to latch on to some kind of a story, even if it wasn't really a story. But, in the end, it's freaking Vin Scully saying your name a lot in a baseball game and there are worse things in life. Keep up the great work, Matt. I know that guys like me really appreciate that look behind the curtain that you are giving to all of us.
Idk If I’ve left you this comment before but I was able to get Nomar to auto a MLB for me before a game when he was down rehabbing with Vegas while they were affiliated with the Dodgers. I was pretty stoked on that 1. NoMar did pretty well with the Dodgers actually. Not like he was in Boston but he stayed over .300, I think .350 1 yr and had a few walk off base hits with them, a couple big 1’s too.
That quiet approach was more common just a few years ago. Nomar did the same in this video, and probably a few more guys in this game that this video did not show. The modern leg kick and all the movement is at least part of the reason why guys strike out so much in today's game as compared to year's past.
@@unclestinky6388 Yeah I remember when a very slight step was en vogue, and being taught that when I was about 14 (~2001)...the preference for a tepid groundout over a strikeout was real and "contact hitters" were revered for some reason. My dad was obsessed with Tony Gwynn's book. I wish we'd been taught to be selective, walk more, and develop a riskier, more powerful swing, especially those players with natural eye and talent for making contact. I guess it's striking to watch Matt because nobody really does this anymore in the majors. Matt uncoils quick as fuck on that single, but it still looks like he was sacrificing a ton of power potential. Could be totally wrong!
@@ianbent0n same! for me it was even weirder, being born in 2000 it was like one year coaches praised contact, and winced at power swings lmao, then suddenly they all praise the longball !
Love the channel bro !! I was at this Game... I literally met Agon after after the game was over ... there was a sports memorabilia Guy right behind home plate on the first level concourse who told me to wait after the game was over to sell me a signed picture of Steve finely’s walk off Gslam vs the Giants from years previous... as I was waiting around ... Agon just randomly came out of a door and stood there.. I walked up to him and just started chattin with him ... Random (fellow) Dodger fans walked by and and didn’t even realize who he was 😂😂.... Agon was Super Cool and down to earth ... one of the best experiences I’ve had at a baseball game !
Wow you played with the mission's, that's where I'm from. When I was in high school and I can't remember what his name was but he was a short stocky light skin Puerto Rican with a strong accent who lived across the street from me who played with the same team. This was around 23 maybe 24 years ago. I used to warn up with him when ever he wanted to do some drills with him. I wish I could remember his name. But he was so cool .I'm going to look when you played here. See what years I missed
That pitch right down Main Street in your 2nd at bat, could been your first Homer! You have the power of a new born kitten, so it could’ve at least a double!
I have a 2007 "signature marks" baseball card autograph i got in a friends box break of yours. I saw it going through my cards and wondered hm, wonder what happened to this dude...and here we are. pretty cool
Brian Giles! There's a name I remember. I'm a Pirates fan, so I was lucky enough to see him play on my team for his best years. Good player who doesn't get talked about enough IMO. I heard he was a jerk, though.

I can't tell you how cool it is that you got your first major league hit against Greg Maddux.
Good Lord, Scully was a total A-hole about that play.
please don't use the Lord's name in vain
None of us can even imagine ur experience...THANK YOU VERY MUCH! for sharing with all wish we could guys
Hey at least you got a hit on your very first major league at bat, and it was off one of the greatest pitcher's of all time in my opinion.
14:54 are u sure thats 65 mph
Did you model your stance after Jeff Bagwell? It’s pretty similar.
Legend has it Scully is still talking about your fly ball to this very day
Idk If I’ve left you this comment before but
I was able to get Nomar to auto a MLB for me before a game when he was down rehabbing with Vegas while they were affiliated with the Dodgers.
I was pretty stoked on that 1.
NoMar did pretty well with the Dodgers actually.
Not like he was in Boston but he stayed over .300, I think .350 1 yr and had a few walk off base hits with them, a couple big 1’s too.
Matt, seems like you had almost no step in your swing and were going all upper body. Was that on purpose?
Great video Matt! Let’s see the game where you hit your mlb home run! Thanks
Should make a shirt that says "It was a double" and send Scully one saying "Should have been an error"
How cool. First ab and hit against a hall of famer. Sick bro
This is awesome experience to share! Just to hear about it from your point of view is great. Thank you for having this UA-cam channel.
More to come!
Will Venable is a 1st base coach now for the Cubs
You made the right choice throwing the ball into the stands. That was the professional thing to do.
Well scully was a legend. So he gets a pass. Though I agree with you.
You got out the box quickly on those groundouts, running through the bag
That pitch right down Main Street in your 2nd at bat, could been your first Homer! You have the power of a new born kitten, so it could’ve at least a double!
When you were out there did you get star struck at all?
really good plate discipline honestly
Those dunkers are always the toughest to adjust to as a rookie infielder. I know from experience. You gave it one hell of a try 👍.
Seriously though you had 2 really good at bats in your rookie debut you were pretty solid.
Geez buddy I thought getting to that ball was amazing enough. Good effort
Sounds like vin had a hard on about you not signing w the dodgers 😂
cooperstown bound
I have a 2007 "signature marks" baseball card autograph i got in a friends box break of yours. I saw it going through my cards and wondered hm, wonder what happened to this dude...and here we are. pretty cool
Greg Maddox you got a hit that’s awesome
Agreed 100%, it was a Texas Leaguer, I’m surprised the gracious Scully was so ruthless, he knew it was your debut & a Top pick 2 Yrs ago
Brian Giles! There's a name I remember. I'm a Pirates fan, so I was lucky enough to see him play on my team for his best years. Good player who doesn't get talked about enough IMO. I heard he was a jerk, though.
anthony often says hes one of the nicest guys he played with
@@brentdraper4382, that's really interesting! I used to have a friends who was a Pirates clubbie, and he said the opposite.
