I've owned four 164's - they are brutally quick ! Before going to the Ring, its going to need a new cambelt kit and accessory belt. The squeak comes from the A/C belt pulley, which needs a spritz of lithium grease. To free the stuck lifters, its will be necessary to use an engine oil-degunge, with a run of 10 minutes at 2500 rpm, followed by an overfill of oil and another run, and then refilled with oil. The refusal to run is typically from the starter motor posts and alternator posts not being tightened down - check them, as main-bus-A undervolt can turn a 164 24V into Apollo 13 - ask me how I know. In the engine bay, its critical to replace all of the engine mounts - again, ask me how I know. Once you have done all of this, you will have a potently quick sports-sedan. I've also got the entire tech manual of the car on CD-ROM, happy to send it to you in confidence.
and don't forget the cam locking tools since it's a 24v, going to run bad if you don't use them and loosening the cam sprockets before tensioning the belt
If you're going to buy a car with no oil pressure do you want to max out your budget? Or do you want to get a cheaper car (like an Alfa) and have wiggle room in the budget to throw some instant gasket at the entire engine bay?
We need to protect Taylor at all costs, he is hilarious and lovely all at the same time. Everyone needs a Taylor in their life! Edit: max respect for walking away from the 300ZX. You're so right. As soon as he started I thought; "this is a thing i'd like to see more of." Could be a lil gameshow thing among car enthusiast channels. Quickest to identify wins, a la Task Master. :D

For example, just had all belts, tensioner, water pump, subframe, clutch etc. loads of proper welding underneath and countless other things such as crank sensors, fuel pump etc. Can’t believe Alfred let it go for that.😮 It’s got some racy Tarox brakes on which we didn’t touch, but I’m sure we put 4 x Avon ZV7 on.
YESSSSSSSSSSS FINALLY SOMETHING INTERESTING! So glad that 300ZX didn't happen, I've been eyeing this 164 for a while now, so happy to see you buy it! A Busso V6, what a project!
Been following Tavarish for quite a few years now on UA-cam always had good content and very nice guy and I'm from the UK. So nice to see him in my lands mixing up with other UA-camrs. Big love.
A white 164 with white wheels: unexpected, but looks quite good. I remember that when the 164 first came out I was allowed a test drive by my Alfa dealer. Being used to my 33 and Sud I was not too impressed at first, until I checked the speedo and realised I was going 50% faster than expected. I tried to buy one a few years later but never made it happen.

That Alfa is beautiful. I don't care if its the slowest round the ring or breaks down 100 times. It wins my heart. I can't see any V8 or V10 being as good as that
Taylor & Alex, good on you for checking oil pressure. So many people (perhaps even myself) would get swept up with the excitement of buying a new car, they'd forget to do their due diligence checks. I owned a 164. They're great cars and far stronger than you'd think. I bought it only because of the intake manifold. Mine was silver with black leather and auto.
I have set up a few first time events and done a fair bit of public speaking and the feeling you get when people actually turn up to your thing is like nothing else. Well happy for you and shedfest crew.
I had a 166 with a 3 litre Busso, what a car, never let me down and the engine is pretty reliable, had none if the issues the twinspark had, you have to look after them though, high quality oil, never be late or miss a service. The only only thing that ever went wrong on it was the German gearbox🤷♂️
tavarish has been on my sub list a long long time, in fact he's where i found THIS channel. i love that you're working together on another fun project! AA and Overdriven are now my two favorite non american car youtube channels. and between those two, it's basically the proper top gear trio all over again.

There used to be an alfa dealer where i grew up and the new models had all sorts of colours but the old ones that would come for a repair were mostly white ... Do white alfas live longer? Genuinely some of the best motoring based content on UA-cam! Your genuine enthusiasm for sheds is so inspiring that I bought a surprisingly tidy E46 Compact for shed money (Such a fun little car). I have big plans for it! I thought my years of buying sheds was done with... You've fully roped me back in to this world!😆
I also have a shed level e46 compact! 325ti. Amazing little car. Also got big plans for it, but at the minute I'm just getting it back to working properly! (full service done, vanos refresh done, new DISA valve, new intake boots, fuel filter & pressure regulator, 3x fuel level senders (keep breaking), new valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, ccv replaced with oil catch can and full cooling system refresh/replacement).
A Subaru legacy 3.0r would be a great idea for a v6 and its actually a flat 6 codesigned with Porsche. Loved the video can't wait for more of the series
@@andriusa.6444 you can find manuals cheap and the auto with a bit of ECU transmission tuning can shift like a dual clutch . But I've seen on their videos they never look at Subarus despite the fact that in many cases it would have made the better car

300zx OEM oil pressure sensor is known to fail I do have 2 sensors (oem and link with the ling ecu) on mine (just to keep the original gauge working) and the oem almost doesn't read pressure after the engine is warm.
I did guess 300ZX, or more so hoped. I have a 1994 300ZX TT that I've had since like 2011 and I love it. I hate to say it, but 99% of the time when the OEM oil pressure sensor on those gets clogged it reads low and the pressure isn't actually that low. If you didn't hear the clattering of the valve train and such it was not likely to actually be an issue. That was likely a perfectly fine engine, but I get it you didn't wanna risk it. However, it might have been a good opportunity to leverage that issue into a good deal and then swap the sensor with crossed fingers...
Shame the 300zx wasn't the car, fantastic motor. Very interested now to see how the alpha Alfred does on the track.......shedfest was a great day. May it continue and grow!

I'm so waiting for more videos of that Alfa!! :) I was a bit dissapointed when you guys went to see 300zx, even though it's cool. I was really hoping for a 156 GTA or similar but you suprised me with something even better! Make sure that the timing belt is ok! Here in Finland they need to be changed pretty much every 3 years
My heart sank when you mentioned the Mondeo. So glad it's an Alfa. Good luck getting to the Ring, if anything like my GTV you'll need all the luck in the World.
The Z32 oil pressure sending unit is known to be faulty quite often. Alternatively, the oil feed hole is quite small and might have debris in it. It does not necessarily mean the engine has low oil pressure. I'm sure that 300zx was fine assuming it sounded okay and wasn't blowing smoke out the tailpipe etc.
Got really excited for a moment there upon seeing the 300ZX, such a disappointment. Was really looking forward to some JDM contents on Autoalex. Hopefully, in future you’ll bring in some JDM cars on the channel😊
I feel like one of the rules on these challenges should be that fixing the car doesn't affect budget but you have to use OEM parts (or the equivalent), so they can choose to either go OEM and save budget or upgrade using the budget (OEM+ would be classed as an upgrade)
Glorious. Like 300zx and looked at a few but I really wanted a 164 Q4 about a year ago and has just lusted after a Busso ever since. Cannot wait to see this challenge
Simply great choice Alex. Beautiful car that Alfa Romeo 164 with a masterpiece of an engine that the Busso is. Or as the good Tavarish would call it a motor…
Alex made a mistake not even thinking about buying a B5 Audi S4. Twin Turbo, Manual V6 with 270hp and easily tunable to make more. Surprisingly, you can still get mid range ones for £6k (Probably get it to the 5k budget if you can haggle with a desperate owner) or you can get ones that run and drive but "need work" for £4k. Freddy won't have an issue getting a V8 though.. B6 S4s still sell for well under £5k these days.
Part of me wishes he’d bought a Brera 3.2 Q4 manual 260bhp and 4 wheel drive… easy for about £3.5k… or even a Passat r32 v6… with tow bar…. But the 164 is going to be a way bigger headache and adventure… bring on the ring
As a precaution, change out or at least inspect the fuel pump. On my Fiat Croma (same platform) I had to change out the fuel pump as it wouldn't deliver fuel. Reason is that the rubber isolator that the fuel pump is mounted in degraded and clogged up the pick up. Reason for the rubber failing is due to ethanol (E10 petrol) dissolving it.
If I knew you were coming to Dudley, I would’ve sorted you some security! Glad you managed to escape. The 164 is lovely too. I can’t wait to hear the Busso at full tilt…
I very very nearly bought a 300zx back in the late 90s, a short wheel base twin turbo slick top manual JDM import, it was a lot of money, only 6 months old, financially it would have crippled me at the time, but I look back now and regret not buying it.🤷♂️
Please Please PLEASE!! Dont ruin this series by adding parts to the cars that are “free” and dont count them in the budget! It completely ruins the concept
Check the plugs, people never change the rear bank plugs on bussos as it's a major pain in the arse. Also change the belt, again a major pain in the arse but busso V6s chew them up if you don't. Old timing belts kill Alfa v6s.I know from experience.
The oil pressure sensors on VG and RB engines are knock to be unreliable as fudge btw... The majority of people fun after market sensors/gauges so there is a chance the oil pressure was fine in the 300zx
I went to Dudley to look at a van once. Advertised by a proper company that sold mostly ex-police vehicles, good pictures, said "drives nice, no issues". * Doors wouldn't lock, central locking just unlocked them all immediately. * Back doors bent badly enough that they didn't touch the seals. * Soaking wet inside. * Smoking like mad and no power when I test drove it (for a laugh by this point). * Alarming knocking/banging from underneath even though it just passed an MOT. Never again. 😂 At least we got to go to a Tim Horton's for lunch, we don't have any round here.
The stock Z32 gauges, including the OIl pressure gauge are notoriously innaccurate. Not to mention the Senders fail over time, giving false readings too. If you have no other way of checking then perhaps the safe bet is probably to walk, but most cars dont even have an oil pressure gauge and if there are no other low oil pressure symptoms then its far more likely that the gauge isnt reading correcly rather than an actual oil pressure issue. Shame the budget would only stretch to an NA auto though.

You mean 300ZX?😅
you drunk?
@@benh745 200, 300, sx, zx... damn Datsuns, they got me all confused.. oops, I meant Nissans 🤭
@@JambonJovii in the exact same way didn't BMW and Merc confuse you?
Simply great choice Alex. Beautiful car that Alfa Romeo 164 with a masterpiece of an engine that the Busso is. Or as the good Tavarish would call it a motor…
Daaaaamn thats a beautiful beast!! Bella machina! Love it! I'm also a proud owner of V6 Busso!
Missed a trick on the number plate... should have called it Willy.
I've always had a soft spots for Alfa. Not the greatest in reliability but they do look nice and drive good!
And no one mentioned the WLY numberplate haha.
As an alfa owner, I'm SOOOOO stoked you've gone and got yourself a Busso! Well In Alex!
the reason why alfa's look so good, is so you can enjoy them whilst waiting for the AA/RAC to arrive.
I had an Alfa 164 in white, 2L Twin Spark back in 2010. What a car!
Sold it after someone broke into it.
Wish I'd kept it
ahaha could watch Alex and Freddy together all day!
I’m loving this series! My favourite stuff on UA-cam ❤
I thought Tavarish was on the short side, but standing next to Alex, either Alex IS small, or Tavarish is normal height! 😂🤣
I think the acid test would be to stand Taylor and Tavarish next to one another as I think they're both pretty big lads.
@@rich_edwards79 Hoovie has said previously that hes about 6'1 or 6'2 tho (Doug on the other hand grows & shrinks every now and then tho 😂🤣 )
Can only be an Alfa Busso
Part of me wishes he’d bought a Brera 3.2 Q4 manual 260bhp and 4 wheel drive… easy for about £3.5k… or even a Passat r32 v6… with tow bar….
But the 164 is going to be a way bigger headache and adventure… bring on the ring
Absolutely gutted when they couldn't get the 300
They got a way more interesting car instead
As a precaution, change out or at least inspect the fuel pump. On my Fiat Croma (same platform) I had to change out the fuel pump as it wouldn't deliver fuel. Reason is that the rubber isolator that the fuel pump is mounted in degraded and clogged up the pick up. Reason for the rubber failing is due to ethanol (E10 petrol) dissolving it.
If I knew you were coming to Dudley, I would’ve sorted you some security! Glad you managed to escape. The 164 is lovely too. I can’t wait to hear the Busso at full tilt…
Wow a 300zx amazing choice sounds lovely too
The 164 QV is a thing of beauty 😍
Nah. ZX all day long.
@@StrawPerson-xq9koif it was turbo and manual yes .But auto ..no all wrong
I very very nearly bought a 300zx back in the late 90s, a short wheel base twin turbo slick top manual JDM import, it was a lot of money, only 6 months old, financially it would have crippled me at the time, but I look back now and regret not buying it.🤷♂️
And here was me expecting it to be the 2.7 litre Hyundai Coupe 😂
they are the slowest v6 I've ever been in and are massively underpowered haha🐢.
@@stichupman yep, they really are woeful engines. Never did understand why they bothered with it
That Alfa 164 is gorgeous
Just love Taylor and his bitch slaps. He is sooo funny. Keep up the good work guys
Cool Alfa getting some love !
Please Please PLEASE!! Dont ruin this series by adding parts to the cars that are “free” and dont count them in the budget! It completely ruins the concept
This just keeps getting better and better! Keep it up 👌
i wish this was netflix and every episode drops at once
The chemistry between Alex and Tyler is sooo good. It's a 1+1=3 situation.
Yes! Finally, a Busso V6, probably the best looking and sounding V6 out there! And the 164 is just gorgeous, love it in white!
this is my favorite thing i have watched all year ! omg big laughs big smiles thank you guys for the amazing pick-me-up after a rough work day!
Here I am peeking that wrx in the background
10:48 Custard creams... Awesome!
* Soaking wet inside.
* Smoking like mad and no power when I test drove it (for a laugh by this point).
* Alarming knocking/banging from underneath even though it just passed an MOT.
Never again. 😂 At least we got to go to a Tim Horton's for lunch, we don't have any round here.
Alex in my eyes you have won already , 164 is amazing can’t wait to see it again in later episodes
That Alfa is the cooolest. Sh*t i have seen. Looks great
