- A rare documentary film gives an insight into the small-town life of Horodok in the 1930s.
The film has been digitized from a copy of the original film stock provided by the Shapiro family to children of Rabbi Eliyahu Garber.
Редкий документальный фильм даёт представление о местечковой жизни Городка в 1930-е годы.
Фильм оцифрован с копии оригинальной киноплёнки, предоставлено семьёй Шапиро детям раввина Элиягу Гарбера.
Once there was a world. a culture completely destroyed in the Holocaust. Thank you so much for this glimpse. So this is a shtetl in what is now Belarus but was then Poland as shown by the shop signs. A vivid reminder of the massive population movements in the wake of World War II.
Such a contrast between the visiting assimilated 'city' Jews, and the shtetl population.
Thank you so much , all information is precious.
Is it possible to determine the location of this shtetl?
A quick search on the name led me to western Ukraine. Should I search in Belarus or Latvia instead?
I. Was recently contacted by distant cousin who was related thru Great Grandmother Sarah Rebeccah Kleinstein’s father, Schlioma Kleinstein son of Abram Kleinstein.
He linked me to a city celebrating the family. The Kleinsteins were related to the Kuklial (Kuklia, Kukla assorted spellings) in Rezekne, Latvia. .. also found many generations of ancestors in the Jaffe family.
Through those connections I was able to trace family back many hundred years. Something I never thought possible. Although I have to take this with a grain of salt since I’m connecting through someone else’s research.
I am hopeful that this small clue might give me insight to the Garber ancestors history.
Thank you so very much for your speedy and thoughtful assistance. ❤❤❤
Низкий поклон тем, кто предоставил эту запись. Я сейчас проживаю в Городке, и конечно же очень интересно увидеть жизнь прошлых поколений. Мира всем!!!
I’m a Garber. My family came to US in 1904. I don’t have much background on the Garber side(my great grandfather Boris Chaim…
He was diagnosed with terminal illness in 1926 and traveled to Israel with his mother (leaving wife Sarah and 9 mostly grown children).
He is buried in Mt Olives cemetery in Jerusalem. I finally found picture of his grave stone this year…
Documents indicate they came from Vitebsk. Wonder if it’s near this shtetl? And perhaps I’m related to this Garber family. It’s not too common a last name…
I sent your comment to the descendants of the Garbers, let's see what they respond.
The Garbers in the film originated in Chervyen (Chvoina), Minsk region, Belarus.
Although it's possible that the family Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Garber (born 1850) - who was rabbi in Chevoina and killed in pogrom in 1920 and was father of the rabbi Eliyahu Garber shown in film - may have moved to Chevoina to serve as rabbi but may have originated from another town. So there may be a connection but if so then a distant one

Та еще Восточная Польша. Такие веселые несоветские лица. Еще до войны, до холокоста... Весьма качественная кинокамера, но скверный оператор. Сильно дергает и качает камерой. Жаль...
Is there sound?
This is a silent movie
Нет звука

It's so sad to realize that children in this movie should've had long lives, married and lived to see their children and grandchildren celebrate with them. Instead a horrible force called Nazism came through and wiped them out.
Which Horodok is this? there are about 6 shtetls called Horodok.
This is Horodok near Molodechno, it was located between Minsk and Vilna. The nearest large settlements are Molodechno, Volozhin, Radoshkovichi and Rakov.
