Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. Thanks for the video! My mind is a mess right now because I have no idea what I want to do. I got into med school (mind you, I don't live in the US) 2 and a half years ago but I had to drop out last semester because my parents couldn't pay my tuition anymore and unfortunately my university didn't give me a scholarship.
It's been a really rough time for me, because I felt like I had it all figured out but the pandemic kind of made me dislike medicine a bit. I don't know if it was because of the exhaustion of online classes or because I legitimately didn't like the career anymore, but nonetheless, I am now 21 and have no idea what to do next.
However, yesterday I stumbled upon an archeology video talking about some of the biggest and coolest discoveries in archaeology, and it reminded me that from the 8th to the 11th grade I thought about studying anthropology. I really liked the show Bones and I was really interested in being a forensic anthropologist, but one of the main reasons I ended up choosing medicine (to study forensic pathology and become a coroner) instead of anthro was that I really didn't find the curriculum to be interesting, since I was more interested in the science side of anthro instead of the cultural/linguistics/history side of it (and yes I know social anthropology is a science as well but I'm talking more about the hard sciences like biology and chemistry and all that lol).
Turns out there's a school in my country ran by the National Institute of Anthropology and History that has the career of physical anthropology. I looked at the curriculum and I feel like it's what I wanted! It has courses like anatomy, physiology, genetics, etc. but it also has history, archaeology, evolutionary theories and so on.
I am still on the fence about it tho. I guess I don't know if I'll like it enough? I'm not exactly sure what the classes are gonna be like. I have a general idea of the career but I somehow feel like it will be very different from what I imagine. I also feel like I wouldn't be a real anthropologist since I would only be studying one specific branch of it, but then again, studying the other 3 branches doesn't appeal to me as much. I certainly think that the cultural side of the career is important and I do want to learn more about it, but not enough to have half my classes be about that.
ANYWAY sorry for the long story, I guess I'm wondering if you know of any resources (videos, articles, books, whatever) that I could use to maybe know a bit more about physical anthropology? I'm sorry if this is a big ask but I would really like to learn more lol. Thanks!

My first suggestion is checking out the AAA (American Anthropological Association) for some career ideas to get a better idea of what you can do after school. Then maybe you can see if you would like it enough. I also released this video

Are you planning to get a masters degree? I’m in my 2nd year of undergrad and I’m not sure if I should switch to anthropology major. I’m currently majoring in biology b/c I think it’s more useful to me, but idk if that’ll help me get into a masters program. I want to do biological anthropology, so I think it makes sense. Thank u for this informative video!
Hi Abby! I am planning on getting a masters degree (but maybe not immediately). I do not think majoring in biology would make getting a masters in anthropology any harder to accomplish. Many students go back to school for something completely different from what they majored in during undergrad. I think maybe just taking some anthropology courses on the side could be beneficial if switching majors is not an appealing option. I hope this helps and regardless of what you choose, you can't go wrong!
Ahhhhh i just wanted to say that your channel is the best thing I've found on youtube on the topic of education. You've answered all my questions about college because it's been hard figuring things out as a high schooler. I've actually had quite a few requests for an Anthropology book recommendations video so I think I' gonna try to make that a priority haha. I replied this to someone else as well but I think it should help: " Some of my favorites are Tuhami, The Pastoral Clinic, and Articulate While Black. Some that I have not yet read that I hear are great are Homo Deus, Guns Germs and Steel, and The Beak Of The Finch. Hey Alivia, I'm very interested in primatology, extinct hominids and paleoanthropology. I'm just conflicted over whether I'd be better off studying anthropology or if I should study something else like maybe biology?
I did my bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and now planning on doing my masters in biological anthropology :)

Since coming back to college I’ve had a 4.0 throughout… I have to take biological anthropology this spring and I am absolutely shitting myself. Lol
First of all-a 4.0 that’s so impressive! And second, biological Anthro can definitely be tough but I find if you put the work in, an A is definitely possible. Hi! What do you mean by scope? Generally speaking, anthropology is quite broad so you could do many things for a career :)

I think there definitely is a chance :) I think it's important to get involved in the field early, which increases your chances even more

Hello! This is a wonderful question! While I am not 100% confident about this, I believe paleobiology would be considered separate from biological anthropology. It's findings can be used in anthropological work but technically, I think it would be considered its own form of study

As I have read some books by him and attended one of his talks in Toronto, I will leave a comment about my thoughts on him! He is an amazing well-educated individual and an outstanding public speaker; I disagree with several of his ideas. One of them would be about marriage. He insists that for women or men to be successful or happy in life is through marriage which I disagree with. I think each individual has the right to decide what is best for him/her; for some, marriage might be the right thing, while for others, it might not! There are more, but the comment would be extremely long! Although I disagree with some of his beliefs, I always like to listen to his talks and podcasts as he is eloquent and well educated.

Same here... I also disagree with him on marriage. I'm actually for the abolition of marriage a very dumb concept for stupid people I despise it as it makes men miserable.

I just read through this conversation and I am in complete agreement with you and Vivian. I would be lying if I said I knew much about Jordan Peterson but based on the little that I do know, I have a different outlook on much of his ideology (marriage, etc.). I do think, however, that looking at a perspective that is different from my own can still be valuable in the grand scheme of education. Great question!!
