Rock got its balls back in the early nineties?!?!? The American underground of the 80's had balls for miles. Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Swans, Minutemen, Flipper, Bad Brains and a whole lot more scorched the landscape and maintained the spark that punk had rekindled in the rock universe. Not to mention the bands that resurrected metal like Metallica or Slayer, bands that benefited from punk and hardcore. No 80's underground, no 90's alternative rock. Sidebar on Fishbone: They performed Sunless Saturday on Saturday Night Live and damn near blew apart the stage. It was as intense and joyous a performance as you could possibly hope for on a TV show. Only it seemed like the audience had more enthusiasm for the SNL house band than they did for them. It's a crime they never made it big, because they actually deserved to.
I had the privilege to see the Free Spirits group live in a small hotel ballroom in Canada not too long after the Tokyo Live album (1995?) - mind-blowing playing, especially by Dennis Chambers!
This is a list full of good albums. Fishbone: Great class! My favourite album is Truth and Soul. Zappa/Ensemble Modern: I saw two of the three concerts in Frankfurt in 1992. That was an experience. Same with Naked City, which I saw at a jazz festival in Münster at the end of the 80s. I think I was the only one who applauded at that time. It was just too much for all the jazz snobs. Vai Sex and Religion is also a really good album. I saw him in Düsseldorf back then. Joe Satriani also played that night. I don't remember who was headlining back then. In any case, it was incredibly loud. I don't know the Praxis album. I have to get it. I got the Praxis album that you presented on Pete Pardo's show. Björk's album is also excellent. As I said, good list!
I’m just gonna throw it out there because I think it’s a great album (30-years-old) that most prog-heads will never mention because it’s not prog: Anodyne by Uncle Tupelo. Their last album as a band, and my favourite from 1993. Ok, back to your regularly scheduled program…. 😃
I bought quite a few of these albums when they were released. Hard to believe thirty years have passed since then. Still 93 wasn't a bad year for the music it seems. By the way, it's all very well showing us the camera you use to make the videos with but when are you going to show us the 'Progometer'? Give the people what they want Andy!
Great List as usual. I just want to mention Aurora's debut album (All my demons greeting me as a friend )this album came out in 2016 and she was 20 years at the time but some of the song was written when she was 11 years old. Aurora is inspired bye Artist like Kate Bush and Bjørk and Billie Eilish is inspired by Auroa. All her albums are Consept albums.
Nice video once again Andy. I do prefer the visual and audio quality of previous videos. There's a bit of loose cotton on the right shoulder of your jacket. It's been there for ages. For some reason, I always want to grab a little pair of scissors and snip it off.
The maligned 80s... that was when Pat Metheny blossomed.. when ECM and 4AD made their best cataloghe, when Thomas Dolby, Tears for Fears, XTC and so mano others became more complex... it wasn't really that bad
This is deeply depressing from a personal ageing perspective 😂🤣 How the fuck is Bjorks immense Debut 30?!? However I cannot agree with the persistent narrative that the 80s were barren. They just weren’t “cool”. Every single album here is one that the nu-vinylists would be proud to have on their wooden stands, and £10k “rig” to play a record on, but for some reason we haven’t quite got there with things like Songs from the Big Chair which say what you like is an extraordinary album. Anyway. Good vlog. Love it.
I was thinking you were going to overlook Living Colour and Primus. Nice save. However, I know you don't like them but Tool Undertow was released in 1993 also. I'd argue they brought a lot more youngins into the prog genre than many you mentioned here.
John Zorn is one of the most "out there" artists around. Yeah, the video was not great, but I think the headphone audio mic is not great either - but I could be wrong. You disagree with me on everything. LOL BTW Andy, have you ever heard of drummer Jeff Sipe. You mentioned Jonas Hellborg; I think Sipe played with Hellborg some. Sipe is incredible!
On the topic of your new recording set up I would say that it is perfectly fine, though it might be spiced up with some helicopter sound effects and a touch of Wagners Flight of the Valkyries. I could never hear the heater in your other videos over your ramblings. All in good humor Mate. Keep chuggin’ Bloke. Always entertaining. I’m serious about the helicopter though. Would be good for a short.
'the best of the funk metal bands is Fishbone'.You're winding me up aren't you? Living Colour(and Vernon Reid's later solo stuff with Masque and DJ Logic is aschmokin'.Future proofed even.Though I agree with you about Stain, sounds a bit slapdash.Still some great tracks on it though
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Fair enough. I was just giving you some feedback on the quality. Perhaps you want to use the new rig on Patreon and the cannon for UA-cam? And yes I am viewing on an 80" monitor so every little detail stands out.
"Rock got its balls back in the early 90s" - The bands you try to ridicule as 'hair metal' were fighting for freedom of expression and were standing up to PMRC and censorship in the 80s, now that takes real 'balls' , playing funk-rock doesn't.
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer yep; Twisted Sister, WASP ...Even a more commercial band like Posion : They had that drag queen image on the cover of their first LP in 1986 when America was deeply conservative and homophobic. Andy you are the only UA-camr that I have ever seen attempt to regress in terms of your video and audio technology set up. Is this your concept of great irony: the idea that your videos regress in quality as you discuss progression in music.
