    I worked in consulting for 4 years, half of which at BCG. Definitely super glamorous at times... My best memory was when I was put up in the President Suite at the Westin in Paris (lucky upgrade) on the peak day of Tour de France... Unforgettable!
    But in that same week I also stayed up working until 3am and still faced an unhappy client the next day :P

    Superb outlay of a management consultant role at a firm like McKinsey! A friend works at McKinsey so I have heard about that feeling of being thrown right in to such a hectic pace! That’s a heck of a lot of meetings! Time consuming! Very interesting! Cheers!!

    I didnt get what exactly are McKinsey consultants are doing, except that they're very busy having meetings and "solving problems.." everyone is having meetings and solving problems. Plumber also solves problems and has many meetings with clients.

      My friend used to joke management consultants were "rent-an-executive". They bring in new ideas, but it usually always result in "trimming fat" (aka cutting operational jobs and middle managers), merging and revamping business. The true value-add relative to their cost is questionable.

    I understand that meetings with the client and your team are important, but - when you get down to the actual productive work (of what you're being paid to do) - what are the typical tasks that you'll be doing??

      Essentially you are problem solving. Analysing data or business structures you have requested from the client, requesting data and other information, putting together briefing papers and slides. It depends on what the project is about and what the deliverables are. An example might be assessing a company’s operational maturity in terms of its processes. This may require you understanding those processes by reviewing policies, procedures and work institutions, then mapping them and determining what the total cost of running that process or a series of processes is end to end. That results in a gap analysis, requirements gathering and a solution design. All that data is then compiled into a report and deck for presentation. That’s a very rough outline of just one example.

    Do you travel every week?
    How is the work life balance?
    Are there any benefits given to you as a result of excessive travel and away from home?
    Is there a certain place you travel to or is different every time?
    And lastly do you enjoy bieng a management consultant and what makes you admire the job the most?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning 4 роки тому +4

      Hi, thanks for your questions!
      Yes, until last year you would travel every week unless you have a project at home.
      You usually fly to the client on Monday and back Home on Thursday.
      Lifestyle / wlb for sure is not always ideal, but you learn a lot on the job.
      Yea I did enjoy being a consultant, but now also happy to transition into a new role :)

    McKinsey and Co is as shady as they come. Working for both the US and CCP to make billions. Not a care in the world as they take advantage of loopholes when it comes to national security. How this company is still allowed to work with Chinese firms that have ties to the CCP is beyond ridiculous. But as usual companies like McKinsey care more about the money then Americas national security.
