Lived on the P.I.'s same there, but, we did remember to stand in doorways or better to go outside and lay on the ground because the native people say incase the ground splits or in any event it gets hard to stay standing, when they last awhile.

4.4 magnitude is like nothing, presumably this one was relatively shallow if there's any meaningful shaking going on. I've only personally been through one earth quake it was a 5.3 and I mostly just remember watching the water in the fish tank slosh back and forth. I was in the middle of the 7.0 earthquake in Alaska a few years ago. Houses fell off their foundations. And the aftershocks were pretty strong too; they start off sounding like a roaring Mac truck. 4.4 does not seem to be that big a quake, we had aftershocks about that big.....hopefully that is not a prelude to a bigger one....

It's because it was so shallow. That being said, even with it being that shallow, it's barely newsworthy. That being said, sometimes smaller quakes like this turn out to be foreshocks rather than the main earthquake and I can't help but notice that the 17th is coming up. Both the North Ridge and Loma Prieta earth quakes happened on the 17th of a month.
CA gets a ton of quakes but ones right near the city center aren't super common. news outlets are excited to show home security footage of stuff falling off shelves etc

We have had 8 aftershocks so far, but unless you were right on top of them you cannot feel them. All part of living in California. For those who cannot get on with there life here, maybe California is not for them.
What no one is talking about is that this is the 4th earthquake in just one week. Earlier last week there 2 in Bakersfield that were 5.0. Bakersfield is just 2 hours north of LA. The 3rd one was closer to Paso Robles. All that in one week. Something big is coming.

It's partially a matter of depth. This one looks to have been relatively shallow, which is why you see any sort of meaningful movement of furniture in those videos. As somebody in Florida, I think the Mississippi River is probably the closest location to you that is known to be seismically active.

Well to be honest you never know take the Ridgecrest quale of 2019 for example a 6.4 one day and literally the day after had a 7.1 yeah we don't always experience aftershock or deal with a foreshock but that's no reason to not stay alert after a quake one never knows if that quake had a foreshock or not until aftershock happen
An aftershock are smaller quakes that follow. The term foreshock is used when larger quakes follow the first. Since this quake was small to begin with, you're right. Nobody is bracing for aftershocks.

Because there are known, documented seasonal weather patterns as well as reports of coming conditions from areas further away from the service area that act as a preview of conditions where you are. Add to the fact that there are cross conditions that affect the target area for which predictions and scaleable chances are reported. "Chance of showers, ..." etc. Cool? There have been efforts to predict earthquakes but the estimated timetables are way too far and between to be useful as a last minute preventative. All one can do is go with the last one, (many of them register so low they don't matter) study it and be better prepared for it.

Actually it rattled a lot of people, because there was a 5.2 last week. That's not normal for LA. 2 - 3 on the scale is about normal.
I think its mainly because of where the epicenter was, way closer to la area than others so it was felt harder

We've been getting a lot of these bigger shakes in the same general area recently, that is not normal. I think a bigger one is the near future.

I live in rural Alaska. A 4.4 would be too small to comment on, they are just routine, and kind of disappointing that it wasn't stronger.
