I have always just looked at thier little comb area. If it comes to a thin point, its a female. If its thicker/wider and does not come to a thin point, its a male. This way has always been very accurate for me through many different chicken breeds
did you know that you can tell the difference between a girl chick and a boy chick by picking them up without holding their legs, and if its a boy, he will pick up his legs, and if its a girl, then she will just let her legs hang. at least that's what I've heard... from my teacher... Edit 1: wow, thanks for all these likes you guys...
hi, Becky, I've been watching your videos for over a year now when it comes to taking care of my chickens is your videos are my go-to for that thank you for your videos
Happy Sunday sister...bless you sweetie you're raising chickens..I can't wait to get started...have a,wonderful week...be safe and stay warm 😄...peace, love, and Blessings to you 😊
If you buy during chick days at local farm stores straight runs can be picked through for pullets by more experienced growers leaving only cockrells. If you order straight runs from hatchery they should be as the group of eggs hatched. About half and half.
Thanks for sharing! My mom and I bought a bunch of pullets from a local feed store last fall and then split them between us. Mine ended up being all pullets but she got one Rooster. The chicks were supposed to be sexed at the store but we figure they always miss a few.
Hi from Germany. I hatched eggs from my incubator and did the feather check. I thought all were hens but now i am sure 1 is a rooster. They are 16 weeks old now
Becky I love your personality and all of your videos are very informational! I started watching you when I first got my chicken and saw your videos of all about chickens! Please keep making videos! I love you bubblyness!
If you actually NEED a rooster, you can often find them for free. People who already have one don't need another one, so the hen broods a few chicks, one or more is a rooster, so they give them away for free.
Pullet comes from other languages. Originally pullus is Latin for Chicken young animal, then Old French is poule, then Old French again poulet, then Middle English pullet. Cockerel comes from more than one place. It is rooted in Medieval Latin coccus, but also French, and Scandinavian languages. The names really do make sense because just as other words in our language come from old ,and sometimes distant origins these do too. To learn more about words origins try searching for the word in dictionaries that supply origins of words.
I just received my book! It's wonderful! Thank you! Love your videos. I will be a first time chicken mom this summer. 🤗 I'm so excited! Praying for all hens. 🙏
Becky, Love your videos. I've always needed help (and yes! I've read plenty on the subject) in separating a hen with her eggs (away from the other chickens) when she is setting. After I've touched the eggs and relocated her, she doesn't set anymore. How is this done? Do you have a video on it somewhere?
The thing is about getting a pullet, most of the time, they are vaccinated. What if I want to have an organic chick? Where can I get that when I live in Canada? I also wanted to see of I can get a dozen of fertilized eggs and hatch them myself. Do you have any suggestions? I'm looking for Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons.
Hi Becky, I started watching your videos and fixing up our chicken coop. They are so helpful. I really would like to know one thing that what you do with hens stopped laying. I have limited space but love getting good numbers of eggs most of the time for my son. Would you eat them?
Creates a video "How To Tell If A Chick Is Male Or Female" then says it's too hard and just buy older!! Look at other videos guys, they talk about the feathers as an indicator.
Had a good rooster once..the girls would not lay when he was there..i guess cuz they grew up without him..he originally was mine n i rehomed him then borrowed him..so..it mustve been a social thing..lol
thank you ma'am for all your knowledge....ma'am i like to ask you a question and i hope you can help me...COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT CAME FIRST CHICKEN OR THE EGG....THANK YOU..........
That's kinda funny the hens make way more noise after laying than the rooster, when you have 12 hens and one roo they are way more on the noise level...
Hey Becky thank you for the video very educational and as for last time when I left a comment about the property no I don't have a lot of money but I did hear I property going for $200 an acre I don't know where it is but I have heard of it
Ive tried feather- not good ive tried vent- have to squeeze baby harder than i was comfortable,no go Some breeds (sexlinks) have a dot on there head or dont. very good breed for eggs also
I know this was a while back BUT I bought Black sex link pullets chicks none had a white dot on there heads at 2-3 days old. Guess what I have a big black/red comb Rooster at week 8 definitely a rooster. He fooled me.. LOL so not always 100%.

My family believed my Barrett Rock chick is a boy and the rest female the 4 survived and different types of chickens now bigger that their mom (the smallest chicken)
Becky, this video’s title is misleading; I’m disappointed. This video does NOT tell me how to tell if a chicken is male or female. Rather, Becky said to not even try, but to order the sex you want from a breeder or select the desired sex from the appropriate bins in the farm store.
You are awesome! I think you are much more fun than a lot of the new homestead shows. It's nice to see such a kind and positive person that doesn't need gimmicks on UA-cam.
She's clueless. She should have said wait until they start crowing then you will know it a rooster. I incubated eggs and wanted help in determining sex of chicks

more than half the video and I'm still waiting for her to actually do what the title suggested she was gonna do
Yet you don’t time stamp where she does.
Funny thing , I searched the title of this video for an entirely different reason 😂

It should be mentioned for beginners that there are sex-link chickens where the pullet and cockerel are different colors.

Doesn’t that come in at about 6 minutes when she explains about the feathers.
If you buy during chick days at local farm stores straight runs can be picked through for pullets by more experienced growers leaving only cockrells. If you order straight runs from hatchery they should be as the group of eggs hatched. About half and half.
My mom grabs the chicken and listen to them and then grabs their beak and says what they are 😂it’s kinda crazy how accurate she is lol
Look up the documentary "Chicken People" there is a man on there that can do the same thing just buy listening to it's little chirp
Thanks for sharing! My mom and I bought a bunch of pullets from a local feed store last fall and then split them between us. Mine ended up being all pullets but she got one Rooster. The chicks were supposed to be sexed at the store but we figure they always miss a few.

Excellent advice for the gentlemen: Make sure the rooster does the rooster dance.
If you actually NEED a rooster, you can often find them for free. People who already have one don't need
another one, so the hen broods a few chicks, one or more is a rooster, so they give them away for free.

Thank you . Do you bathe your chickens and how ?
Males and females run about 50-50 so expect half of them male in a straight run
I love love LOVE your intro, thanks for bringing it back! I guess it’s a comfort thing...
yeah 5 minutes waste of time intro ;)

Hatchery offers unvaxxed chicks. Just search
In Thailand they did it so well that its very difficult to tell which is a real chick or fake chick.

Great job with the book Becky. I only have four hens left. I'm eager to order my spring turkey, duck and chicks.

We’ve had 2 whoopsie roosters from pullet tubs.

I can tell you the difference between a week old male and female. Its all in there size and how their feathers are growing in.
Love your videos. We got a happy surprise when we got a polish rooster mixed in with some pullets we bought. He turned Out really cool though!
Hi I love all your videos know
I my chickens are well and healthy
I take good care of them so thank you
Becky here is a funny- I saw it posted in a chicken forum: How can I tell if my chicken is pregnant?
🤣
Some people just don't know. I give them credit for asking at least, there is hope☀️❤️☀️
Thank you so very much for the information
Thank you so much! I’ve been wondering what to do. Can’t have a rooster in town…
Define a “good rooster”
You can get a DNA kit, small blood sample from chick, and se the sex chromosome, I just wait until they are teens
You can actually tell the sex of the chicken by their wings, a roosters feathers are straight across, where the females are layered
You are the Chicken Queen. Awesome tips.
I didn’t learn anything. Hope the book explains better
thank you ma'am for all your knowledge....ma'am i like to ask you a question and i hope you can help me...COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT CAME FIRST CHICKEN OR THE EGG....THANK YOU..........
I say the chicken☀️❤️☀️
I ordered from a feedstore who ordered 2 pullets from a hatchery and still got a rooster but they are hopefully giving me another chick to makeup
Eat them??? No they're my pets. Did you mean eat the eggs?
That's kinda funny the hens make way more noise after laying than the rooster, when you have 12 hens and one roo they are way more on the noise level...
Janet Croneberger one time a got a mixed batch of chickens amount 21 I live on one acre and my luck is terrible so it wound up being all roosters
That's crazy.....one roo is plenty!!! Hope you either rehomed or stew pot.
