What is so great is that Lionel takes this as serious as anything else! Getting totally psyched and racing hard. Some pros have all kinds of excuses to just not give it their best shot. Here is openness in power/ hr. If there would be a strap measuring ATTITUDE this guy would have a number unbeatable by anybody else.
@Steve King Pulled a muscle ? LOL these guys train 20+ hours a week minimum in all three disiplines. They will not pull a muscle, as they have all the correct warmup, cooldown and stretching routine. not to mention that they know their limits.
@Steve King They get Injured due to high impact training and the training volume increases the likelihood of injures. It is pretty dam hard for a pro athlete to get injured, unless they're going above and beyond what he/she is capable of, the build up and overall conditioning does not allow for such an easy injury. The hip injury i'm guessing was from repetitive strain with running ? Yes. A high impact activity will cause a fracture as it's getting hammered. Also.. sanders literally says that I'd they train too hard or over train then they will get injured..no fucking brainer.
@Steve King Pros need stimulus to get into raceshape. that's why you see them do to all kinds of self organised challenges at the moment. The big problem for cyclists is the lack of race stimulus now. Hard efforts that is. For that reason the employers will have no problems with them racing hard on the ebike. It is good stimulus AND the risk of getting injured is extremely small, smaller than a training ride outside. Or are you gonna tell now the sponsors dont want the atlethes to do that either..
Twas a great race!! @Talbot now that you've green screened Lionel, can I suggest you add overlays, above his head for his HR, power and candence. That way we can still see his power etc, even though he's overlayed on the other footage.
Great effort. You're right Lionel, sprinting is all timing. Generally best to compare your sprint power curve to other athletes to find your best sprint effort duration. Patience is key. Long attacks can work, but if it's a bunch sprint, unleashing at 200m is normally ideal. Also in Zwift the jump, the first 3 seconds of power in the sprint matter more than IRL. So jump hard, then hold, head down full gas. Personally, if I had your power profile I'd do everything to make the race extremely hard or try an invisibility/burrito attack at 3/5mins to the finish.
Lionel you are the man!!! I really am not sure what this sport would do without you. Win, lose or draw you give it your all and are a class act in every respect. Thank you for making this difficult time a little more enjoyable!!! Cant wait for the next one!
I think Hellriegel has a very low HR too. Ironman is different kind of endurance, so I guess it's not too surprising that he has a lower rate. Still, being in 130s seems special.
Great race, I watched the Zwift recording and yours. Words of wisdom in the last 2 minutes, congrats for taking a stand and asking or advising Zwift to clean up the pond to raise e-racing to another level with better accuracy.
Great race across the board. Not sure if waiting and drafting just before the sprint would have made the difference, but it was great to watch in any event. Awesome performance!
Amazing effort...simply amazing. I didn’t catch the race live, and I avoided the comment section while I watched. So close......but really exciting. It’s definitely not the same as watching Ironman coverage.....but great in a totally different way.
Good race man, you'll get the sprint timing down next time! Just a tip, since we've all seen the broadcasted video already, You should post your audio commentary (rather than the zwift commentary) which you do post race, over the actual race video so we can get an idea on what you were thinking as we are watching it.
One obvious big thing that makes bike riding so hard so simulate are of course that the rider is part of CdA. In car racing sims the driver sits inside a car and the simulated aerodynamics can much easier be taken out as a racing parameter since every gamer has the same CdA. But in bike racing and especially on a TT machine, position is such a big part of the overall speed/performance. (Alex Dowsett discusses this after he's first TT race the other week if you want to get deeper into the facts over at he's youtube c). There are some interesting ideas of how to measure Cd (not A) with a webcam. You would put a webcam at a specific position from the rider and software could then calculate the area your exposing to the "wind" (basically by taking the overall pixels - the moving pixels e.g. the rider - the background) and then giving you Cd penalty in the game from there. Since aerodynamics (A in CdA) is almost impossible to simulate accurately even in a wind tunnel it will never be totally accurate but this webcam exposure trick would at least get you some advantage of "staying low". And actually quite easy to implement if you can then guarantee the position of the webcam, so of course the riders need to prove that to. Every TT rider knows the difference at producing power over the bars vs sitting upright..... anyway, just thinking out loud. Great inspiration as always Lionel! Thnx
I am a slow pro for one more year hoping to join these events but can't seem to get in contact with anyone to make it happen. Anyone here know a Zwift contact?
What is to stop a rider from having a bottle of oxygen or mask! Just like an altitude tent but the other end of the spectrum! Anyhow it's great entertainment thanks!
Lionel is an animal. I do think Zwift need to address the disparity between speed online and real world speed, these guys biked 20km in 25 mins which if you're trying to replicate reality as close as possible is way off the mark.
No it'not. The avg speed for some iron man distance races would be 40-42 km/hr. This is a 20km sprint. Entirely within the realms of possibility to avg 48 km/h or at least not far from it.
lionel becoming the face of tri zwift! what an amazing brand ambassador - pay him ZWIFT!
No kidding. For the ridiculous amount that Zwift charges US$180/year they should’ve sponsoring a lot of athletes.
Roger C still cheaper than going to spin class for a year
These commentators are excellent and are exactly what zwift racing needs.
Another race by Lionel that got me crazy motivated. After I watched him race, I went 0 to 100 in my workouts!
it gives me fuelllll

A certain cyclocross star comes to mind. I hope Van Der Poel is embarrassed.
Me being Dutch and a huge fan of vdP of course can only agree this time...

Agree !
Don't think I've ever seen Lionel so excited.

uphill finish wait wait wait live and learn you will only get better keep it up
Love his honest humble opinion and point of view.
An amazing push. I love the self analysis. Huge watts and low HR! HOW?! Lionel is a unique machine.
He prob has a horse heart. That's the only logical explanation I can think of.
I think Hellriegel has a very low HR too.
Ironman is different kind of endurance, so I guess it's not too surprising that he has a lower rate.
Still, being in 130s seems special.
He has insanely low heart rate?! My warm up gets me to his heart rate lol
@@fabianvilela9527 amen. Mine too.
I love how Lionel takes all his failures and turns them into major building blocks. It seems he takes all his failures personally to hisself
I love your self critique ! Super motivating ride Lionel!
Your heart rate data amazes me, your stroke volume must be immense!
Great race, I watched the Zwift recording and yours. Words of wisdom in the last 2 minutes, congrats for taking a stand and asking or advising Zwift to clean up the pond to raise e-racing to another level with better accuracy.

Lionel, keep em coming!
Thanks for the info at the end. i was wondering how they kept people from height and weight doping. Awesome race!!
Amazing effort...simply amazing. I didn’t catch the race live, and I avoided the comment section while I watched. So close......but really exciting. It’s definitely not the same as watching Ironman coverage.....but great in a totally different way.
Great race Lionel. You did the right move before the finishline. Sometimes it works sometimes it dont... 😊
Great effoirt and great video, keep up the good work
Lionel clearly needs to learn the SHAKE AND BAKE
Great Race, Sanders is a unique machine.
Put on a great show 😎
Dude, you are awesome! Can't wait for next.
Amazing race, well done, LS!
Heck yeah - I love this Zwift series!
Awesome race once again ! 👍
Good race man, you'll get the sprint timing down next time! Great effort, thanks for posting🍻
I watched it live earlier today. Great effort by Lionel and amazingly close finish among the top-10 riders!
@Christer Berg. How do you watch live?
On Wednesdays at 16.00 cet on UA-cam.
great racing!
Good luck all!
I would love to see this same group and how they would ride a 44+km race!
How are these races helping your training? Looks to me you're building some significant power and speed. Great job Lionel!
They should be able to include a run on a connected treadmill!?
@Talbot. Since you are confined can we do 3 Lionel vids per day ?
Great stuff
Legend
Watched it live! Nice one, I know how the ending must have felt :)
It looked liked you had alot of fun though :)
legend!
Look at his Bpm!!! 😳 Not more than 145... Amazing
a god amongst ants
Zwift owe you a lot.
Lets go Lionel!!!
Rocker plate would help with max power in the sprint as you get to use your hands and upper body more.
I mean arms of course, not hands...
I’m confused. What makes this a tri race? As opposed to just a bike race?
It wasn't a Tri race but it was just triathletes racing. Hope that helps.
Bike race you right

Will we be seeing you also do the Duathlon or Triathlon?
zwift.si for more details!
Where was Cam? The Brownlee brothers?
Hiding?
Cam is a cyclist
When is the next one?
How do you find these races and watch them ?
i so want to try zwift but fudge trainers some what expensive :p but it is for my health
fucking awsome mate , next time wait bud
I am a slow pro for one more year hoping to join these events but can't seem to get in contact with anyone to make it happen. Anyone here know a Zwift contact?
Surprised he’s not in the pain cave
Charlie Pearton I think he’s at his home in Arizona. Guest bedroom/pain cave
I wonder why all these events are super short distances?
John Wood I assume they are trying to build an audience. A 15 minute race is easier to digest than a 4 hour slugfest
Grabs popcorn*
you used the aero power up and then 5 seconds later started sprinting.
could have won if you started sprinting and somebody else pressed it for you :)
That was just a little off timing that did it. thought it was a clear win.
What is to stop a rider from having a bottle of oxygen or mask! Just like an altitude tent but the other end of the spectrum! Anyhow it's great entertainment thanks!
Integrity
Those powerups are lame, Lionel was putting out more than anyone and got passed on the line cos some dude pressed a feather button
Más vatios que el equipo Ineos. Esto es más falso que un billete de 30 Euros.

You need a new heart rate monitor my friend.
Power-ups.. totally 🐃💩
No fault of Lionel, but I have to say that watching races on zwift is pretty boring...
Lionel Sanders > Chuck Norris
