    Cool Vid. A few things:
    1. You can use tap water. No problem.
    2. You should soak the entire fruiting block in a tub of water.
    3. Fruit the block upside down. You will have bigger yield.
    4. mushrooms don't "need" light, but it can help them develop some more vivid colors.

    10* Love doing this, and having your own highly clean, all kinds of grass- or wood-eating shrooms. they are now finding that many shrooms have Vit A, B, B complex, B12, C, ... even D and E plus trace minerals. And if the shrooms are left in the sunshine, the Vit D increases. Natural and safe (versus fish liver oil, bear liver) Vit D..... Lad 'em up! .... Eat 'em up!

      If you do a VERY DILUTE sea salt (C90, DeSouza, etc) product ... SPRITZING (not soaking) and tossing the medium (hay straw or wood compost/chip/mulch/shavings) after the sterilization process (pressure cooker easiest), ... then you should get the trace minerals and a good performance shroom.

    Besides the invaluable joy and fun you have growing the mushrooms from the block, it seems that the cost of doing so is not as economical as simply going to the store and buying some, no? If cost and economy is the primary goal, the time/effort and cost is prohibitive, yes? Just curious what viewers think. I'm interested in the subject, but cost and time of course are always a consideration. Thank you.

    • @Suyamu
      @Suyamu 8 років тому +1

      I think if you clone the mushrooms and make your own substrate you may eventually grow them on a regular basis for a lower cost. That said you'd have to invest into some gear to make that happen - things like a sterilizer, basic lab equipment like petri-dishes and test tubes, a glove box or a blower with a HEPA filter. Unless you plan to sell mushrooms you'll probably never get a return on that investment. ;)
      And that is disregarding that if you invest your own free time - which may or may not be expensive to you.

    • @shaolinmaster8583
      @shaolinmaster8583 8 років тому

      +Suyamu growing mushroom that way is fucking hard and you could potentially poison your self if you don't keep your environment clean while the mycelium is colonizing. it's not like growing a plant, its basically like growing a bacteria culture to an extent. and if your going to do it you have to on reasonable scale because chances are your going to get some contamination in some of the cultures once it's fully colonized your good but when get contaminates don't try to save your mushrooms and you should treat it as medical waste because it could have the potential to kill you

    • @Suyamu
      @Suyamu 8 років тому +1

      Shaolin master
      I haven't grown or cloned mushrooms myself yet, but I've read quite a bit about it because I want to try growing some Shiitake some day since they can be hard to get where I live.
      It seemed daunting at first, but I think I have the theory down more or less.
      The way I understand it it there are some means to minimize chances of contamination. Also contamination seems to be more or less easy to spot (or smell), both on the petri dish and in the substrate.
      Though before I'd attempt it, I'd buy a couple professionally made kits just to experience for myself how it's supposed to look and grow when it's done right.

    $30.00 to make maybe 7-$15.00 worth of mushrooms doesn’t seem like a profit in my backwoods math. I mean if you’re growing them for fun, sure but you’re not saving any money.
    Now yield that much for only $30.00 of Morel’s that’s a different story.

    No one said what that *KIT COSTS* because other than the spores OR the SINCERELY INFERIOR PLUGS I BOUGHT *FROM RAINBOW SUPPLY ON AMAZON* most of those items can be bought at the Dollar Store-a "spray bottle"? or a plastic tray.
    Guessing THIS KIT COSTS ABOUT 80 BUCKS. AND THE ONLY THING NEEDED ARE THE SPORES. Cuz trust me! MYCELIUM ON PLUGS-which IS the "normal way to grow Shiitake" drilled holes into an OAK limb~i haven't found a company YET. BUT I AM *NOT PAYING FOR A "KIT"* thanks
    ps YOU *PROVIDED ME NO KNOWLEDGE OF GROWING SHIITAIKE & extremely ***_RARE_* to get a SECOND *FLUSH* FROM SHIITAKE, I see you did give IT W/O THE KIT!
    BUT LITTLE DIRECTIONS+ I APOLOGIZE-YOU DID GIVE NOT GROWING INSTUCTIONS BUT SOME INFO ANYWAY
