You made my year with this one, banana man. There has never been a SINGLE 240gr .454 Casull ballistics gel test in the history of the internet. You are the first person EVER to shoot gel with that round, and I've been waiting YEARS for it to be done.
Yeah, this channel is gonna blow up. He's got so much great content and is showing no signs of slowing down. He's definitely going to eventually join the 'million subscribers' club. 🎉
I was at a Sportsman warehouse back in the 90s and I ran into I believe Jack Fullmer, one of the engineers who designed the Freedom Arms 454. At the time I was having issue with mine. Mine was field grade and it had the pachmayr grip. He said put on a wood grip because the gun was suppose to rock when shot. He did say something interesting. The velocities and pressures the gun was made to handle well, his demonstration gun was loaded to "100000" cups,(not a typo), not the low 65000 cups as stated. a 260 grain bullet at 1800 fps was the starting point for loading. DON'T try that with those weak Rugers. I had one and the Rugers cylinder had ridges so deep I could not eject the shells. The freedom arm 1983 is the real hand cannon. I don't believe my S&W 460 magnum could handle that pressures.
If you're looking for non-expensive additional tests- the ol paper plate test is a good one! Just stack up a few dozen paper plates and see which cartridge goes through more.
.480 is tough to find. I like Hodgdon L'iL Gun for reloading. I get the best velocity out of a handgun with it. 410 grain WFN LBT from Grizzly Cartridge. I use H4227 in my Levergun with the same bullets.
Never been hands on with a .480. Gotta be a handful. The 454 I've launched hundreds of projectiles downrange with, and .44 even more. One of my former employers carried a .454 snubby as a daily carry, not a lady to piss off. With the 1st Gen Freedom Arms .454 we found that after a few cylinders it was best to go back thru and tighten up all the screws. My personal choice even over the .500 S&W among the monster wheelguns. I need more ammo than that, so it's 10mm with a full stack.
I bought some 454 revolvers when it first came out, a 7.5 inch, a 6 inch and a 3 inch barrel, which doesn't have an ejector rod. The 7.5 inch is a Field Grade, the 6 inch has an upgraded factory cylinder bushing and is a premium grade, as is the 3 inch model. I liked the rubber grip on the Field Grade so much, I added it to the others. When I first bought them, loaded ammo was $45 for a box of 50 and empty cases were $22 for a box of 50. The revolvers included load data.
The .480 Ruger is actually kind of the opposite of the usual regular cartridge => magnum cartridge relationship. In this case, the .475 Linebaugh is the big magnum cartridge and the .480 Ruger is the lighter, easier shooting version that came along later. Not that the .480 Ruger is some weakling, but it offers an easier to shoot big bore that is still very capable against things on which you might want to use a big bore. And yes, they are compatible, so you can shoot 480 Ruger from a 475 Linebaugh gun. I don't know if it would sell all that well, but the 480 Ruger is only marginally longer than a .44 Magnum which means that you could theoretically have a big bore in both a Ruger wheel gun AND in a new Marlin 1894 lever gun. Capacity should be about the same as well. Marlin lists the capacity of the 1894 Classic with a 20" barrel at 10 rounds of 44 Mag. The SBL 1894 with the 16" barrel has a capacity of 8 rounds of 44 Mag. An 16" barrel 1894 in .480 Ruger would offer a really handy, light carbine with lots of oomph if you should need it. And it could share the ammo with the revolver on your belt.
your channel and your content is top notch! Really enjoyed this set of tests. Can we see one with the 454 460 480 and throw a 45-70 outta a pistol? That's would be amazing! Keep up the bad assery!
Bisley grips are designed to roll in your hand. They were designed for single-handed shooting. If you watch shooters who shoot them correctly, you'll notice the revolver rolls up, back, and inward. Some swear by them. I like them on the freedom arms .454, but still have some learning to do with them still. Good luck! P.s. Your headache is from shooting. Explosions send pressure outward in all directions. These ones just start doing it at the muzzle. Use disposable foam earplugs with a good set of Howard leight vs130 muffs over them. This will help keep your eardrum at the same pressure as atmospheric and should lessen your headaches during longer shooting sessions. You will still eventually get a headache from the pressure affecting your sinuses, but it will take longer.
Another test you can do to compare rounds is 5 shots on target, quickly. It will show how large the group is compared to the power, and how quickly one should expect to get five rounds on target (a difference of 4/5 hits on target with the weaker gun in five seconds is arguably a metric to compare to the strongest gun getting 2/5 shots on target in 9 seconds)
I love the dude but have thought this since I first discovered his channel it definitely invalidates results in the lumber test frequently and probably affects the results of the steel tests as well. He built multiple sleds to hold these targets in a way that would ensure consistent results but the expansion by adjacent shots in the same target pretty much makes all that fabrication effort null.
@3:00 I agree, the Kore Essentials EDC belt is definitely a game changer. I went from using a regular dress belt straight to using one of these Kore Essentials at least nine months ago and it's the kind of thing that makes you wonder where was this belt all my life LOL
I was just wondering. On the sand test that you do on other calibers. Could you add a GoPro to the back side of the target like shooting from the ground on an angle that there's no possible way that they could hit so you wouldn't lose money on the GoPro? I think it might add to your cinematic wonderfulness.

Lived in Alaska my whole life. I've owned and carried all of those calibers, but I go with the 480 Ruger mostly. A bit l3ss recoil than the 454 and you can get really good penetration with hardcats
Elmer Keith's performance goal for the 44 mag was his 250 gr hard cast bullet at 1250 fps, for years I deer hunted with the nosler 240gr hollow point over blue dot at just about 1300 fps and was always satisfied with the performance and enjoyed using the loading, can't understand why anyone thinks they have to have 1500+ fps loads...

Damn it all, bears are now carrying around "lumber & Concrete"....?They as bad as that good-for-nothing burglar hiding behind the fridge in my neighbour's house.
I love these calibers. I almost purchased a 480 ruger, I already have the Casull and I love it. It's a heavy hitter in a reasonable sized frame compared to the 500 Smith. It actually fits in a holster.
I've been using 330 gr Garrett Cartridges in my 9 1/2 in Ruger Super Redhawk 44 mag for years, they're very impressive. With a good scope on it they will do an inch at 100 yds. I would love to see someone test them.
Just a thought Banana, once you shoot the block of wood, I doubt that it has the same strength when the second round hits it. You might want to try a one shot per block approach and see if there is a difference in result.
Amen to that, it's not like peppering wooden blocks like that with .22's, the impact shock of those hot slugs probably loosens the woods grain throughout the block, with successive shots making it progressively weaker.
How can your test be fair after the first rounds enter a block of wood that you continue to use for each caliber? Are the blocks of wood that expensive?
I would still rather have a 10mm semi auto - more shots - and easier to get on target with follow up so more holes to take out a wheel - also fast mag changes not that you will ever get a mag change if a bear is charging but still
my understanding is the 480 was meant to be a reasonable supermag, a less powerful, yet still sufficient cartridge that can be more controlled to get shots on target faster and easier without sacrificing too much power.
No, the .480 Ruger was meant to be a regular magnum caliber, hence it having the same case length as the .357 Mag, .41 Mag, .44 Mag and .45 Colt AKA ".45 Long Colt".
@@silvermane1741I’m just curious why you can’t never find any of it on the shelves? I’m not that familiar with the round but did it not become as popular as these other big bore cartridges?
The 454 has always been my fav round as it was the first time I found proof of there being something bigger than a 44 magnum. So that was a while back of course like the early 70's
Your videos are some of the best, but I can't understand the significance of sticking your pinky in bullet holes, what (or how) does that prove if anything? I mean we can tell by looking at the bullet hole with our eyes how big the hole is. The 454 Casull reigns supreme in terms of velocity and energy over the 44 mag and the 480 Ruger, the 454 Casull will be my next handgun purchase for when I go hunting for water jugs or ballistic gel blocks. Keep up the good work !
We need 454 44mag 357 45-70 lever gun comparison.... I've got the rossi r92 in 454 a it's awesome. Looking for the rossi r95 in 454 but it's out of production at the moment. Rossi does production rotations so hopefully it'll be back soon
You're the only person I can think of for this but can I somehow send you some hornady 6mm arc TAP ammo to test? It claims to provide barrier blind terminal performance but don't have the means to test it myself. I have 2 boxes left of factory loaded 106gr hornady TAP 6mm arc left over from accuracy testing
Fun fact, a majority of commercial 480 Ruger ammo is way underpowered! Aria Ballistics and Buffalo Bore are the only ones I know who load it to its true potential, which is actually beyond most 457 linebaugh. Seriously, it is a POWERHOUSE at full power.
@@watermann8200 That's not true; most 10mm is NORMAL-powered, and some loads are OVER-powered. Norma themselves decided the original 10mm load was overpowered, and they reduced it soon after it came out. The FBI never used that overpowered original load, because again, Norma decided that the original load shouldn't be the normal 10mm load. 10mm fanboys would claim 9mm +P+ is "real 9mm," and then claim "nearly all 9mm on the market is underpowered." That's ass backwards thinking.
They're not "underpowered," they're standard loadings. For instance, Winchester white box 240gr is a standard load for .44 Magnum. It seems underpowered when you compare it to some of the Buffalo Bore options but that's because they load hotter than standard.
Two cheap belts, with 2 five to ten pounds weights, one on each side, will hold down your gel. Excellent tests. ❤ I bought the 44 for exactly this reason. Putting one in the center of its organs should get it done. No panicking is the key. Hobby Lobby has nets that would hold it down also. See thru....
5:31 . . . if I had a dollar for every time I've said that, . . . . before going down on a last call panic pick, . . . I'd probably still have a lower jaw. What can I say, . . . . that Terry torso is a bad influence.
Because he thinks they're the best. That's like advertising food at the best restaurant. He's just giving advice. He doesn't get a kick back on anything you buy from there. He just gets a sponsor to pay for the video.
They’re his channel’s sponsor. He gets help from them to make his videos in return for advertising for them. If he thinks they are a good company then shouldn’t that be good enough?
454 is a really nasty round. I had the same Super Redhawk and actually upgraded to a Rossi R92. The velocity is quite a bit higher with the longer barrel and it's absolutely devastating.
That's why when I bought my SRH, I got it with the 9 1/2" bbl. Loaded with (hand-loaded) Hornady 300 gr. XTP's it feels like a hand-held artillery piece!
Im not losing my mind, right? Banana has been observing "most impressive" results with the 454 but the text pop ups are giving points to the 480?

429DEは454カスール弾と480ルガーの中間位に収まるのかな?
"Awesome" I really look forward to see these videos, makes my day. The best videos man, keep up the hard work we all appreciate u 🙏
Agreed. ❤ 😊
Great Videos as usual!👍🏻🇺🇲
Over pressure will most definitely give you a headache. Should give yourself a few days rest before you get a hematoma
Whats the final score?? those dont get posted anymore :/ and chrono chart?
Very entertaining and informative
You're the only person I can think of for this but can I somehow send you some hornady 6mm arc TAP ammo to test? It claims to provide barrier blind terminal performance but don't have the means to test it myself. I have 2 boxes left of factory loaded 106gr hornady TAP 6mm arc left over from accuracy testing
Those bear-rriers didn't stand a chance
Has anything ever damaged the plywood through the concrete?
Yes some have gone right through both
Good video. Funny and instructive
Fun fact all commercial ammo is underpowered. Handload to unlock true potential.
Yeap and same goes for 10 mil ammo.
Yea I just loaded 500 rounds of 480 ruger and was able to get way higher velocity then off the shelf ammo
480 Ruger 🙌
Two cheap belts, with 2 five to ten pounds weights, one on each side, will hold down your gel.
Excellent tests. ❤ I bought the 44 for exactly this reason.
Putting one in the center of its organs should get it done. No panicking is the key.
Hobby Lobby has nets that would hold it down also. See thru....
Best videos bro!!😂👍
5:31 . . . if I had a dollar for every time I've said that, . . . . before going down on a last call panic pick, . . . I'd probably still have a lower jaw.
What can I say, . . . . that Terry torso is a bad influence.
Babe wake up another banana ballistics video just hit
AWESOME DUDE.......Thanks......
Old F-4 pilot Shoe🇺🇸
Were the scores not right on this? Im very confused
No discount for MidWay? Why would we shop there?
Because he thinks they're the best.
That's like advertising food at the best restaurant. He's just giving advice. He doesn't get a kick back on anything you buy from there. He just gets a sponsor to pay for the video.
They’re his channel’s sponsor. He gets help from them to make his videos in return for advertising for them. If he thinks they are a good company then shouldn’t that be good enough?
Reminded me of an incident many years ago. it's raining rocks!
This makes me glad that I bought my Super Redhawk in 454.
Am I the only one who wants the sand test to come back?
454 is a really nasty round. I had the same Super Redhawk and actually upgraded to a Rossi R92. The velocity is quite a bit higher with the longer barrel and it's absolutely devastating.
That's why when I bought my SRH, I got it with the 9 1/2" bbl. Loaded with (hand-loaded) Hornady 300 gr. XTP's it feels like a hand-held artillery piece!
@@haidozo4732 Dick Casull was a maniac.
Theyre supposed to roll in your hand :p
What link in the description?
Wowzer, firewood.
I want to see a bear wearing 3/8inch body armour!😅ATB👍👍👍
