    What about Nuhrii? He's built up as being a mask maker with dark intentions because of jealousy, so he tries to make an ultimate mask. (Sound familiar?) Unfortunately he gets trapped when going to retrieve the mask and it's never brought up again. G2 Makuta was basically the same character done right.

    • @volatile5460

      Makuta Miserix
      Literally every Matoran set of 2004 has that trait of jealousy going for them. In the end, Ahkmou is the only one who gets to do anything with it.

    • @makutamiserix5612
      @makutamiserix5612 6 років тому +10

      More of what I meant was, Nuhrii was about to make what was essentially going to be the G1 equivalent to the mask of ultimate power. That could've had so many good uses, but it's concept was dropped entirely. The only remnant we have of it is the non-canon "Mask of power" in the Ultimate Dume set.

    Not only was Tuyet’s resurrection convoluted, it was also pointless. She gets brought back as this allegedly powerful being who could tip the scales due to Teridax not factoring in her survival...
    And all she does is argue with a few people about destroying the Matoran Universe, and then gets teleported out of it anyway. Nor do we ever see her use this stored power she allegedly has, so Tuyet is brought back to accomplish literally nothing. Like, why go through such a convoluted process to bring back a character, and then set them up as an unknown variable and lynchpin against Teridax, only to have her accomplish nothing and then be effortlessly whisked off by Teridax anyway?

    • @makutamiserix5612
      @makutamiserix5612 6 років тому +7

      Well, she was teleported to the fortress that the Cursed great being was being imprisoned in, and Greg confirmed she escaped with everyone else before Velika blew it up. I bet Greg had some future plans for her, along with everyone else that was in the fortress.

    • @makutamiserix5612
      @makutamiserix5612 6 років тому +2

      That would be a cool use for her. The Marendar (it's more of a lifeless machine than it is a character with emotions) was specifically designed by Angonce for killing Toa. Maybe it was never programmed to handle the full power of the Nui stone?

    • @tranqle73
      @tranqle73 6 років тому +2

      Makuta Miserix Not to mention, we know that Tuyet is the kind of person who would create a Toa Empire, the very thing Marendar was made to stop... And Marendar is attracted by Toa Power, which Tuyet is the most massive, current source for...
      Also, with the Nui Stone, could Tuyet create other Toa without sacrificing any of her own latent Power?

    Another thing to mention about Brutaka was that he somehow KO'd the Toa Nuva and the six matoran with them in one shot, then never displayed that level of power again.
    As a side note, we never found out why Kapura had his super speed/teleportation ability, or how it works. Think about how awesome he could have been as a Toa.

    • @k-leb4671
      @k-leb4671 5 років тому +4

      I think his speed comes from some silly "art of war"-type philosophy that Vakama spurts and somehow makes Kapura actually literally move fast.

    • @tsukopara2054
      @tsukopara2054 5 років тому +1

      Brutaka isn’t that powerful, it’s a case of comic book power level being employed. An antagonist needs to start off almost ungodly powerful & then be nerfed so the good guys can beat them.

    • @the_Red_Star

      Not sure about that first one, Brutaka has been pretty consistently shown to be extremely powerful.
      He took over the barraki by just showing up, stalemated _Teridax_ 1v1, took on an army of Skakdi together with Axonn and easily pushed the FoF team around even though all 5 members (amongst them, a Makuta) wanted him dead so they could fuck off.

    Personally, in my opinion for Mata Nui, he should've reverted to his Glatorian form instead of remaining in the mask, because it gives the other characters hope and inspiration, especially after he was hyped up for ten years and only ever appeared in a physical form in the Glatorian arc and technically in the Mask of Life.
    Plus, they did Ackar dirty by taking away his best friend. And I personally think it would be cool to see Mata Nui physically talking to the Toa be had overseen all this time. Ah, memories

      Mata Nui, Takanuva and Matoro all seem to be Messianic and/or Paragon Archetypes. Even Ekimu from Gen 2 seemed to be this. But the way they handled their characterization in movie and animation form, especially Mata Nui's and Ekimu's, leaves much to be desired.
      Indeed, as the mentioned in the video, because of the limited time and the fact that Bionicle G1 was coming to a close, Mata Nui come across as a bit Gary-Stuish rather then Messianic and Ekimu was...I don't know how to describe him.

    I just wonder how the story of Bionicle would of been different if it started out as a tv series instead of a toy line. Honestly the story of bionicle is just so *awesome* but couldn’t of been fully fleshed out due to the limit of how marketable every major plot point is to buildable sets.

    • @vorovaxx4233

      Air-headed Aviator I feel like we would have had substantially less figures if it happened in the reverse order. With the story coming first as a single medium I feel like they would have honed much more on particular characters and lines; excluding what would have been "irrelevant" to portraying coherent story. Versus what we got which was lots of toys to boost play ultimately and a story that tied them together. But that's just my take :p I vote TTV answers this question in their next video!!

    I think the reason all this happened was a simple one: all bionicle written content was written by one person. And he simply didn't have time to flesh out every single character. Some shouldn't have existed goldskinnedtitanmarenderandvelika, but it there was more than one writer in house, things would have been better I think. Basically, all of these can be explained as one of two things. For weirdness involving actual sets released, it’s executive meddling. For everything else, it’s the consequence of what greg farshtey described as him not planning anything out and literally making stuff up as he goes. It’s uh....an interesting approach to long narratives. I guess.

    My personal headcanon: Ekimu is Takanuva. After saving Mata Nui and the entire Bionicle Universe, but then becoming a glorified babysitter for the rediscovered Metru Nui and getting stuck in the alternate universes, Takanuva finally had enough of being a side character in what he sees as his story. After Spherus Magna was rejoined and as the various Toa and Glatorian were slowly killed off by their various enemies, Takanuva saw an opportunity; he used what he learned on his various adventures to lock away most of his power to become a Turaga and changed his name to Ekimu, making a name for himself in the new meta-civilization that was emerging from the fusion of the Matoran, Agori, Glatorian, and so many other groups, tribes and civilizations that had arisen when Bara, Aqua and Bota Magna had been separated. This meta-civilization would eventually become known as Okoto, and Takanuva, posing as Ekimu, would rise to a position of prominence and eventually authority in this new world, putting himself into a position to shape Okoto into a land of peace and prosperity, guided by his light and wisdom.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 6 років тому +12

      "Why does he call Makuta in G2 brother though?" some may ask. Simple; Makuta in G2 is Teridax from G1. As was revealed on Voya Nui, the Makuta are sentient clouds of gas (well, more or less...) that can exist for a time without a physical body which makes them extremely difficult to kill. Teridax's gaseous state wasn't completely eradicated when Bota Magna smashed into his robotic head at the end of G1, but he was severely injured by the impact; Teridax lost most of his memories and sense of self, but somehow managed to survive, probably by taking on unwilling hosts that he used to build himself a makeshift body that he then used to wander the wildlands and wastes of Spherus Magna until the forming of Okoto.
      Eventually, he was found and brought to Ekimu (Takanuva) who instantly recognized Teridax's spirit from the time the two were fused as Takutanuva, but Ekimu eventually realized that Teridax's mind was severely damaged and he suffered from massive gaps of memory. Ekimu felt that, thanks to his brief union with Makuta as Takutanuva, their spirits were kindred, that they shared a bond more brotherly than Makuta ever shared with Mata Nui, and (by his logic), light and shadow are brother elements, and so felt it was his duty to redeem Teridax for all the wrongs he inflicted on Mata Nui, the Toa and the Matoran.
      So, Ekimu took it on himself to fill in the gaps of Makuta's memory, carefully crafting stories of their shared past, how Makuta was Ekimu's long-lost brother, etc. But, part of Teridax that survived the impact of Bota Magna was his drive, ambition and jealousy, which eventually led to Makuta's betrayal of Ekimu in G2 and Ekimu restoring his Toa power to become the Toa of Light when Makuta's affinity with shadow powers led him to an alliance with the denizens of the Shadow Realm (an alliance that Makuta made when he sensed that Ekimu was hiding things from him) and releasing the Skeletal Army on Okoto.

I'd already had those problems with Botar for years, and stuff like Mata Nui or Lesovikk seemed fairly obvious, but you managed to actually convince me that Brutaka, my *single favorite character in the series* , was written in a somewhat flawed manner. Not only that, but the humor was on point for every single argument, and I didn't really see it coming just *how* bizarre the writing of characters like Tuyet or Ancient was. The only one I didn't agree with? Takanuva. Stellar video. I should get back into TTV.

    In gen 2, Kulta is probably the weirdest character. On top of having no origin or motivation, his title of "Skull Grinder" didn't even make sense since his weapon was a staff. He lead an army of skeletons while being a skeleton himself. How? Was he a lich? Or was he just raised alongside the rest of the skeletons that were raised with no explanation? He defeats all 6 Toa at the same time in a single attack, but then gets one-shot when Ekimu shoryukens him with his hammer. At least the Lord of Skull Spiders had the excuse of being an animal.

Like imagine Velika has a big climactic moment where he reveals Perditas as one of his “most loyal servants” who has been “hiding among the ranks of the toa and glatorian and the like” only to be hit with the utter anticlimax of literally no one knowing who or where he is.

    • @styrofoam9981
      @styrofoam9981 5 років тому +3

      Not really; the entire storyline came about because Mata Nui neglected his internal universe and by doing so allowed the Makuta to do what they did. Not to mention he allowed Tuyet to be a horrible dictator in an alternate universe because he was still fine in functioning, despite the miserable atmosphere inside. Takanuva is Bionicle Jesus.

  • @krx50
    @krx50 6 років тому +1

    Honestly, I think Mata Nui was written weirdly not because he became the main character, but because of the reveal that he was really a giant robot and all of the previous stories took place either on or in him. That really rubbed me the wrong way because it ripped away a lot of the mysticism that Bionicle had built up over the years. Mata Nui was written as some kind of divine spiritual being, to the point where he was often referred to as "The Great Spirit", and making him something very different than that honestly kinda ruined the story of Bionicle for me.

      @@MrAvakstone92 @Katie Lewis And? I completely get what KRX50 is saying. None of this robot stuff was ever detailed in any way up until 08/09 or so. We were given no real idea as to what any of it was, and it was just some cool technomagical robots fighting a mastermind until, whoops! Everything was in a giant robot made to repair a shattered planet so... you know, let's talk about that now! And don't worry, nothing's happening in the robot while Mata Nui is busy relearning his ABCs!

    Interesting fact: I just realised that in Polish and Ukrainian "Velika" (велика) litteraly means "The great", or "big". Looks like Velika was planned to be the great being from the very beggining! Lol...if it's true - its one of the best bionicle easter eggs.....in my opinion!

    I like how G2 Onua hates maces, but that's what he was given as a weapon. He has a big hammer or shovels as Master, and then as Uniter, he has a hammer/drill/stud shooter/mace thing. If you hate maces so much, go back to Ekimu and ask for your shovels back! I like shovel form anyway. Although Onua is wise and is peaceful by way of being wise, he looks like a brute, and looks best when he's punching things. That's why I gave Onua Uniter Terak's claws and Terak Onua's hands and the mace. Not only is it funny looking on Terak, but it looks better on Onua. Downside is that he can't bend back his hands, but he looks great with big mitts. So yeah, not the weirdest written thing, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Onua is stuck with a weapon he doesn't like.

    I'll tell you who was weirdly written, the Great Beings. So, at first, Mata Nui WAS a Great Being fulfilling something of a God role. Then it turns out he was MADE by the Beings who were the original inhabitants of the Magna planet. But who or what they were and what happened to them was never explained to my satisfaction.

    This is a great and interesting list Meso. And everything that you've said was pretty spot on. I would have also mentioned that the rest of residents of Bara Magna, especially Tuma were weirdly written too. This is mostly a nitpick of mine here, but recently I found myself thinking that Toa Helryx instead of Toa Lesovikk could have been introduced in 2007 and released as a product. It actually would have made more sense that way now that I think about and for two reasons. One, Helryx is the leader of the Order of Mata Nui and she could have been notified about Brutaka's betrayal, so Botar could have taken her to the Pit to deal with him when the conflict was taking place. And two, the Pit was in the deep and she's a Toa of Water. And the other Makuta - do you think they were weirdly written too?

    • @Sunaki1000
      @Sunaki1000 6 років тому

      Im not him, but Spiriha was a little weird. Why did he not kill Miserix and go along whit Krika?
      And why ask the Makuta for reinforcement, if they Goal was too loos and let the Toa awake Mata Nui? If you ignore Makuta Teridax Orders, it would be much easyer too send a weak Rahkshi Team too pretent. All Makutas are evil Geniuses, but only Krika find this fishy?

  • @halpysbane3373
    @halpysbane3373 2 роки тому

    But there was an entire story about Brutaka in Makutas guide to the universe where he leads a group of reformed villains to find and rescue the first makuta imprisoned by terradax. I also believe it ties into takanuvas interdimensional adventure

  • @shvansee216
    @shvansee216 9 днів тому

    Wait... but isn't botar like the perfect character to be killed by Icarax? Yeah the resurrection part is a little weird, but it's not him anymore. Botar is the one who made Teridax afraid, and him being killed by Icarax only shows how powerful the makuta is, and why Teridax fears him. Also the lack of story and everything just makes me not miss him much, as he was just there, teleporting a bunch of people away.

    Botar had kinda cemented himself as this terrifying character every time he showed up, someone who even fellow Order members were hesitant to cross, so Icarax kicking his ass, easily even, was likely supposed to seem impressive.
