Borat Obama Well, depending of what you call a rocket, airplanes came a quarter century before it. But basically fireworks are rockets and came thousands of years before. Anyway, in KSP we speak about liquid-fuel rockets.
luke timothy Well, ok but that was not that far before. The first turbojet powered airplane took off in 1939, almost the same year nazis came with the V1 missile. So basically, both kerbals technologies came for us at the same time in a practical way. Anyway, what really bothers me in the tech tree more than rockets vs aircrafts is manned vs unmanned.
Actually I was wrong : the V2 missile was the first liquidfuel propelled missile, V1 was powered by a jet engine, so jet engine came before liquid fuel rockets in operation. (5 years apart)
I love all the item ester eggs in ksp. If you zoom in on the red text on the side of the sepratron, it says: "big rocket thing. Do not drop." And if you zoom in on the Z-100 batteries, it says: "Batt man batteries." The SP photovoltaic panels also says in a yellow rectangle: "warning. This thing opens." On the inside of the science Jr. It says in comic sans: "danger, science stuff." A white and orange warning label on the side of the LV-1R liquid fuel engine says: "Warning. Exhaust is usually extremely hot> do not touch exhaust, inhale exhaust, or bathe in exhaust." And finally, on nose of the mk 2 cockpit next to little retro rockets is the text: "RV-ST04R." I'm sure there's more, but that's all I found.
The biggest problem with this mod is the modder, and his views about the modding scene. He started with minecraft, and was among the people that founded the biggest API for that game, but he then distanced himself and his own mod was made purposedly to not work with any other mod. In KSP, his mod is also widely incompatible by design with other mods, and no matter how good his work can be, it can't compare to all the other mods that exist. Sadly, it means it is in my blacklist, despite the mod being interesting in itself.
Yes, I'm not exactly happy with the choice of incompatiblity with other mods. I'd be quite happy if someone came up with an alternate tech tree which focussed on probes early on and was more compatible with the rest of the mod community.
Scott Manley I love RoverDude's Sounding Rockets mod for providing some early career mode science as an alternative to the usual starting game tricks. Once other parts start showing up, it's possible to make an Explorer 1 type satellite with them.
Scott Manley Mod oriented tech tree has an alternative that focuses on starting unmanned forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/90938-Mod-Oriented-Tech-Tree-%28January-5-v0-3-1%29
Oh dear, FlowerChild made a KSP mod. His Minecraft mod, Better Than Wolves, still to this day continues to impress at the sheer genius of its design. Seeing his work here in KSP is awesome!
***** I'm not a huge fan of BTW but I do use BTM, it just seems thematically appropriate to start KSP career with explosions, when playing vanilla I now force my self not to use parachutes until a few missions in.
Daniel Wilson Ah, no I did not. Though here's the thing, the first American mission to space, as I recall it from my history textbooks, was manned. I suppose that's the feel KSP was going for.
71tofu Actually the satellite Explorer 1 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer_1 ) is the first thing the US ever got into orbit and it was unmanned. It doesn't make sense at all to send living beings in such a dangerous and unknown environment before you send unmanned craft there to actually investigate this unknown environment.
How is it possible that a guy like him haves only 400k subs?! Everyone knows you, even here in france at my little school, everyone likes you, but only 400k are subs?! Wtf?!
Scott Manley :o How do you have time to read all messages with all thos videos scott? That's incredible! That's true, but you don't only play games, you do also explain real physics, and that does interess most of the people, so I think it's unfair that someone like you has only 350k subs. Also sorry for my bad english, I'm not english.
Not everyone subscribes. In fact, this is my first and only subscribe (just recently) even though I've been watching his videos for a long time. If I hadn't found this channel, I'd probably still be scratching my head trying to figure out how to get into orbit!! Scott likely has many times more fans and even more people who know about him than he does subscribers.
Too bad DongPrincess, aka FlowerChild is a bratty little dictator that can't bare the thought of his mods being defiled by any others being placed along side it (minus tweak mods and interface improvements). Other than that lil tidbit, I completely agree with his mod design approaches both here on BTSM and on BTW. Basically, If I knew how to mod worth a damn, I would have more or less done the same things. I'm surprised his gigantic ego hasn't steamrolled through this comment section yet
Celestial Archangel Phoenix I checked better than wolves and it is an awesome mod. Which version do i need to install it ? Is it compatible with 1.8.9?
Celestial Archangel Phoenix I know how to change Minecraft version, and i will try out his mod. but I don't want it to conflict my 1.8 saves, and I don't want to move to and remove the mod from my minecraft directory constantly. How do i play the new versions with the mod installed?
If you are looking for more challenge without painful vanilla science grind, then I highly recommend this mod. Tight amount of available science combined with new tech tree really requires some creative thinking and a lot of experience with KSP. Perfect for KSP veterans. What some people might not like is slight 'railroading' of progression that this mod forces with energy/life support/antena ranges.
Maybe, but there's always sandbox mode if you don't like the linear progression. Personally, I'm interested in trying this one. I'm pretty noob at KSP. In fact, I've never made a lunar touchdown. I've came damn close, but I tend to run out of full when getting to a lunar orbit. With that said, I don't really mod it much, and I wouldn't know where to begin. This mod looks interesting, however, since it can take somebody like me, and get a whole different experience out of what is essentially the exact same game.
Well said indeed. Especially on a Scott Manley comment section, where many of the viewers have seen Scott clear through the stock game in 2 missions! This mod would require a papal edict (or clever editing) to make early exploration profitable. The intent (and result) is to enhance the satisfaction of completing milestones and rewarding thoughtful design. I recall the first time I successfully achieved orbit in this mod as one of my most enjoyable KSP experiences, after having done it hundreds of time prior in stock and FAR based games. Since then it's been expanded a great amount and balanced relentlessly. It's not going to appeal to everyone, but I have found that those who give it an honest go tend to find themselves preferring BTSM to stock or other mod setups.
You can get perfect center every time on round surfaces using the offset tool. Get it close to the center using attach mode, then, with 'snap' still turned on, do a miniscule tug in any direction using the offset tool and it will snap to center (sometimes it 'lifts' off the surface, but you can bring it back down easy without getting it off center).
I've been using Better Than Starting Manned for several months and have greatly enjoyed how it changes career mode. It's interesting to see another player's tact for moving through the first few tiers of Science as my approach was different. I research towards liquid engines as quickly as possible and make a series of ballistic flights into space to obtain gravity scans. I put off the manned flights until I have stage separators available. In the future, Scott, I would be among those that would love to see you do a series that involves using BTSM.
Sound concept? Check. Interesting features? Check. Overly restrictive to the point of insulting execution? Check. Utterly ridiculous incompatibility in the name of creative simplicity? Check. Good to see Flowerchild hasn't changed.
You know, the new gui allows you to place parts exactly in the center by leaving position locking on and clicking on a direction axis while the part is close to the center. The part will snap to the exact center, no need for symmetry approximation.
Fun looking mod, thanks for covering it. Be a bit of a trial with Remote Tech installed though. As several have stated here, would be cool to see this in your next series, once IQ is over. This, RSS, and maybe trying to follow/recreate NASA's first steps into space? I for one would love to see your take on a Kerbalised X-15, and a Mercury/Gemini buildup for the first Moon/Mun missions. But thats me and I'm silly :)
I once made a ship with the same initials (BTSM), standing for Better Than Scott Manley's. And it would have been and almost was, except for that my slow computer wouldn't let me develop it.
10:57 "It doesn't have any internal controls".... I think Jeb just noticed that after you said that. It's kind of unnerving to see HIM terrified during a flight when things are going fine
If you'd put the side solid rocket boosters at a slight angle from the vertical to give the craft a bit of spin, you should see that it goes up much more straight
Because bouncing around the video trying to find where he stops reading it is so much easier than Scott not reading something we are perfectly capable of reading after we've paused it...
I actually really appreciate Scott reading the mod's text, because i frequently watch his videos while doing something else, so i can't go out of the way to pause and go to fullscreen so i can read all the text that appears.
Hm, I kinda always liked to think, that the Kerbals never had those concerns towards strapping Kerbals at highly explosive devices that go several hundred meters per second. It's a part of the Kerbal charm so to speak. I don't really want a super serious Space Program Simulation. But thats just my opinion.
So... Why are their Kerbals wandering around inside the VAB along with their vehicles... but not outside in the space center? Devs, please fix for immersion purposes.
came here for mentions of FlowerChild work on minecraft, wasnt dissapointed , his BTW mod was really that great ... one thing though for BTSM , i would like to see jets early in the game
Scott!:) What are you planes for the next ksp series? What mods and such? I heard realistic sized planets. Any other insane and Lovely difficulty levels that I will put in and play along?
Hey Scott... With those character voice talents of your's have you ever thought about ditching science and starting a new career with the Jim Henson Company? :)
Scott, first of all - thanks for the videos. Helpful and educational. I was wondering whether there are any benefits to launching into a prograde vs retrograde orbit? KSP or in real space flight. Thanks!
this video just made me really notice that weird roll to the West when you launch a dumb rocket (after years of KSP playing.). isn't that some coriolis effect mixed with the "Kaerodynamics"?
I'm surprised Doctor Snidely didn't make a voice cameo in the administration building, after the Xenonauts military voice did. I suppose he's too busy freaking out over the... KFOs... flying around... Yeah, this thought is losing water.
you might want to look at the SETI Mod forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/106130-0-90-WIP-SETI-BalanceMod-Scope-Economy-Tech-Integration-v0-5-3-Jan-15 Which sort of tries to do the same things but is a bit less restrictive mod-wise
:-P This unmanned approach sounds too safe for a Kerbal mentality. I find the manned mission on lousy rockets much more realistic. That said, the correction on the KSP science cheesing and the massless part correction sounds cool!
I tried it several times, really wanted something that made more sense than vanilla ksp. I always found it way too restrictive, taking fun out of the experience wich is an immediate showstopper.
That's very interesting mod and I wonder, will you make more series like your "Interstellar Quest"? FlowerChildXL said, it may take about 100 hours of playing to unlock the whole TechTree.
If they restructured the game like this it would be so much better....I just feel like there are so many parts and useless objectives in the game that never see the light of day because of different things, but if they made them all useful like this then I would enjoy it a lot more.
All of the facilities are upgraded because of a bug in the 64-bit version. To fix it, don't launch the Launcher.exe, but launch KSP.exe (not KSP_x64.exe).
More realistic I suppose but less KSP. 50% of the charm is the suicidal gung-ho Kerbals hopping into what is clearly a deathtrap and looking absolutely thrilled about it.
Basically... it makes gathering science actually balanced? No more going around the KSC and getting loads of free science. Mission types being unlocked via science seems nice but probably a bit too linear. Seems like a good mod though. Thanks.
Physics glitch? I don't think so Scott. I think it may have something to do with the fact that you have a horizontal speed of 174.5 m/s, whilst the surrounding air has a speed of 176.5 m/s or so. Never underestimate the Coriolis effect.
I always thought it's weird that you have to unlock the ability to build planes by flying rockets...
We had rockets way before we had planes irl
Borat Obama Well, depending of what you call a rocket, airplanes came a quarter century before it. But basically fireworks are rockets and came thousands of years before. Anyway, in KSP we speak about liquid-fuel rockets.
dexter9313 Yes, but AFAIK we had Rockets before we had Jets... there ain't no Props in KSP.

fluff wise, it makes a ton of sense to me for kerbals to send kerbals on extremly dangerous missions without having tested anything first.
***** But I don't want to endanger my kerbals.
I don't always use probes...
But when I do, I do it for safety.

Absolutely loving the VO in the mission room :')
I really really like the descriptions. :)
Omg why did they make like this!!?? its even more linear then CoD!
Its only this highly linear in the beginning, as you progress to interplanetary it opens up more.
Nexus Trimean well i don't want CoD
Its not a cod
We launched a lot of things before strapping a human on top of the rocket you know.
Besides, it's a mod; if you don't like it, don't use it
Pyrobird well here, especially the first tier, you have literally no options
While technically great, I wouldn't inflict flying a Stayputnik probe on new players for any reason. I avoid the cursed thing at all costs!

I play some Better Than Wolves, but have never played KSP. Always wondered what this was about. Good video
i wish someone remade this mod...it is absolutely AMAZING idea
I dont usualy comment on video's but I could listen to you all day. Great video thank you.
"I killed Jebediah by flying too high"... hahaha, Scott, you murderer, you! :-D

Good to see Flowerchild hasn't changed.
The strategy kerbal voices just slay me. Thanks
Really good idea. Putting a realism spin on the tech tree for those that want it.
That is totally realistic, Just like Wernher von braun (*rocket* *scientist* 1912-1977) And the soviets started by sending unmanned rockets

You can center the antenna on the probe by using the offset tool. Just start dragging and it will snap to the exact center.
I can't be the only one who thinks this would be perfect to use in whatever the successor to Interstellar Quest is.
This version is great would love to see more.
"Mod by flowerchild" 10 to 1 it's incompatible with all other mods
I'll most definitely try this one. The mission design sounds amazingly fun!
6:51 i wanted to see the explosion ):
Never much cared for FlowerChild's mods in minecraft. And the developer always struck me as a petulant presumptuous child.
Please make a series of this. Please.
Honestly i find this as a good idea so when youre new you dont kill any kerbals, and the fact that there are warheads
If you'd put the side solid rocket boosters at a slight angle from the vertical to give the craft a bit of spin, you should see that it goes up much more straight
The actual reason for turning west is the Coriolis Effect, so the system is actually perfectly modeled.
Imagine how hard this would be if you had remote tech installed too! That is if it's compatible.
If you were wondering, the verb form of "mass" is "amass." Just thought I'd share a little factoid.
The reason that turns it is angular momentums conservation. Because it goes up so radius increase lowers speed of planetary turn. So it goes west
Better Than Starting Manley.
I feel like stock Ksp needs a tech tree revamp where you start with only basic airplanes and then get probes before manned pods
7:40 If only UA-cam had some sort of feature that allowed us to pause the video and read the text if we wanted to...
If only UA-cam had some sort of feature that allowed us to fast forward the video and skip Scott reading the text if we wanted to...

Then we wouldn't hear Doctor Snidely who has left the R&D for accounting instead :P
isn't that what happens when you hit the pause button?

Charles Ferguson There's a deltaV difference of about 350m/s
Thank you, sir.
this video just made me really notice that weird roll to the West when you launch a dumb rocket (after years of KSP playing.).
isn't that some coriolis effect mixed with the "Kaerodynamics"?
Scott's PR voice sounds spot on doctor Kleiner from the Half-Life series
You could probably do the 30000m record if you used two more radially mounted boosters in a separate sage
what's the matter colonel sanders? CHIKEN?
+Captain von Kerman PREPARE SHIP!!!~...Prepare ship for Ludacris speed!
+Samniss Arandeen you mean Ludicrous speed!
Shadowkey392 Ludacris speed. As in, speed that actually results in rolling out.
They've gone to plaid!
I'm surprised Doctor Snidely didn't make a voice cameo in the administration building, after the Xenonauts military voice did. I suppose he's too busy freaking out over the... KFOs... flying around...

I tried it several times, really wanted something that made more sense than vanilla ksp.
I always found it way too restrictive, taking fun out of the experience wich is an immediate showstopper.
Scott for the voice actor!
That's very interesting mod and I wonder, will you make more series like your "Interstellar Quest"? FlowerChildXL said, it may take about 100 hours of playing to unlock the whole TechTree.
he should rename it to be Better than Starting Manley
The Return of Snidely!!!!!!!
If they restructured the game like this it would be so much better....I just feel like there are so many parts and useless objectives in the game that never see the light of day because of different things, but if they made them all useful like this then I would enjoy it a lot more.
You should do a playlist of this mod
It sounds like Dr. Snidely and Mortimer Kerman may be related by the similarity in their voices.
just so entertaining Scott :D
Scott, ever considered doing a collab with Bob Fitch? :) I could imagine you two talking some fascinating topics of space and KSP.
@Scott Manley Hold alt to snap it to the center
O_O Jeb was making a worried face! I thought he was a BadS.
you should have switched the kerbal finance and science manager impressions
also petition to rename the head of KSC Science to Snidely Kerman
You can also align antennae using the offset tool :P
this mod looks pretty cool
Is it Doctor Snideley doing the research for the kerbals?
No he's doing accounting.
Please do Outer Planets and Stella Expansion/Kopernicus Core!
Under 80 club. Awesome video and mod.
FlowerChild the guy behide the better then wolfs mod and the most famus person to opose yogcast modpacking thing
like the concept of the mod... makes more sense than stock... but wondering why the facilities are all maxed out to start
***** Add dogs for flight testing... and call them "Kibbles".
Wolf Tronix LOL! I love it! yes!
All of the facilities are upgraded because of a bug in the 64-bit version. To fix it, don't launch the Launcher.exe, but launch KSP.exe (not KSP_x64.exe).
You need to make a series
More realistic I suppose but less KSP. 50% of the charm is the suicidal gung-ho Kerbals hopping into what is clearly a deathtrap and looking absolutely thrilled about it.
Basically... it makes gathering science actually balanced? No more going around the KSC and getting loads of free science. Mission types being unlocked via science seems nice but probably a bit too linear. Seems like a good mod though. Thanks.
At the beginning after reaching first orbit I always asap switch to Probes anyways without a mod
So like how Earth started space exploration
scott manly and the administration building
A truck runs over a Kerbal at 1:41. Must be a DUI, if you look at how the fast the truck is going. :(
Turning of uncontrolibal ships is because of the rotation of keratin
Lol at you using the Doctor snidely voice
EYY YO SCOTT WITH THAT AMERICAN ACCENT GOT ME SPOOKED
Physics glitch?
I don't think so Scott. I think it may have something to do with the fact that you have a horizontal speed of 174.5 m/s, whilst the surrounding air has a speed of 176.5 m/s or so. Never underestimate the Coriolis effect.
14:45 - What about the Weather Survey?
3:50 Does not contain potato, It sounds so funny. :D
