I made most, if not all, of those mistakes as a Sketchup beginner many years ago. Now, components and groups are the most logical thing in the world. I'm glad that Sketchup replaced the word 'layer' with 'tag'. Tag makes perfect sense, but 'layer' was as confusing as hell.

You will be glad to know that I have finally, after having used Sketchup since Google Sketchup 6, started making groups and components.

Excellent timing! I was struggling this week with many of these issues. When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Thanks Adam, been using SU for years and still learning; thanks in no small part to this channel.

I have been using components then groups. Components is great to edits later for same items in the whole project. and grouping is also great to move bunch of components together as in copying You can actually copy a component in a group, exit out of the group and paste the iyem then make it unique and go ahead and edit it. My 2 cents

You need to use "groups" or " components" in almost any design software - 2D or 3D. The names change, but the paradigms are essentially universal.
Likewise, if you are working on a timeline system (audio or video) and have to do anything complex, you'll need to group, nest, lock and unlock elements.
    Just saying....

Is there a way to have SketchUp Pro prompt for group names as you create them or do you need to make that change in the Outliner?

There are 2 extensions which gives you those options

You probably already know this, but SketchUp does automatically prompt for a name when you create components. They probably don't prompt with groups because I think people create groups quickly while they're modeling and most like would be annoyed naming them right away. That being said, I usually name my groups as soon as it's convenient.'

you can also change group names in Entity Info. If you want the prompt, just make them components. You can always 'make unique' later if you need to detach one to edit it individually.

@@Randor10 There are extensions also to bypass the prompt for naming components.
SU prompt for component naming, not only for name, but because of the other options... gluing, axes, and so on.

I've always modelled in components . Should i change to groups ?
    Thankyou

Hi! When Aaron refers to Groups in the video, he means Groups and/or Components. You just don't want loose geometry in your model. Indeed, some people advocate for ONLY using Components, never Groups!
Keep doing what you're doing 👍

I consider whether I'm going to be making lots of copies of an object and down the road whether I'll be needing to update them all at once. I used to make things components by default, but then found I was spending so much time making them unique for specific changes that I only made components when I thought I'd be duplicating them.
