  • Watch the CBS Sports Network broadcast of AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 1 from Miller Motorsports Park. Class front runner Cameron Beaubier and his Yamaha Extended Service YZF-R6 looked to continue their lead status, but many other riders like JD Beach, Jake Gagne, Jake Lewis James Rispoli and Garrett Gerloff looked to end his streak.

OK, I don't know much about this stuff so be easy on me. If my eyes are deceiving me it seems like the bikes wiggle and wobble a lot. How do the riders know if it's wobbling too much? Obviously tank slappers or whatever are too much. It's pretty amazing what they can do, but how much is ability and how much is electronics? If I tried this I probably would finish because I have 2 weeks > riding experience.

@ N Johnson, I know your comment is a year old now so maybe you've gained the experience to answer your own question but... What separates great riders from good riders how well they can interpret the feel of traction from the tires and the moment of movement on the bike. Take the obvious feeling of sliding across paint in the wet or riding the fine line of traction on dirt oval, now imagine riding on the very limits in a high traction environment and you can see that very smooth and linear yet immediate response is necessary to be among the best. As you ride harder and harder, you will experiment and "steer with the rear", adding a wee bit too much throttle exerting longitudinal forces in addition to the lateral load placed on your rear tire's contact patch and momentarily moving from a state of static friction to dynamic friction, a very dangerous condition unless kept in check with very fine motor skills (especially with the front tire e.g. overloading the front contact patch with braking at max lean angle). For more information see: Kamm's Circle, then put on your helmet, go to the track and enjoy an adrenaline fueled science experiment!

I recommend picking up a copy of 'The Upper Half of the Motorcycle: On the Unity of Rider and Machine' by Bernt Spiegel. It's only about $20 and I promise if you read and understand, you will become a better rider and a smarter person.
