  • What happens when two strong-minded individuals from opposite sides of the political debate sit down for dinner? The BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme sent Made in Chelsea star Toff on an election blind date with food blogger Jack Monroe.
    Toff, real name Georgia Toffolo, says she had a privileged background and is a Conservative Party member, while Jack Monroe, who at one time was unemployed and unable to afford food, is a member of three parties, including the Labour Party.
    But did they get on?

    Toff "The tories are getting away with murder". Yes, quite literally if you look at the tragic suicides of a number of disable people due to the cuts in their welfare benefits.
    Does she know what it is like to work 40-50 hours on minimum wage? Are they fairly paid for their work? Does Toff think she works harder than a full time nurse/policeman/fireman/shop worker/teacher? If rate of work was fairly paid in this country (I've seen Made in Chelsea), Toff would be paid roughly £2 an episode. All she has likely ever known is privilege and it is quite simply embarrassing to watch her take pride in her words.

    This is an example of those on the more conservative side of politics pursuing ideals over practicality. It would be great if those on welfare receive the help that they truly need, like Jack should have, and that the select few would stop abusing the system-yet how can that be accomplished if you cut funds to the system as an entirety? How is that a viable solution? It’s like using a hammer to kill a mosquito. Perhaps abuse of the system can never be entirely prevented, yet that is worth withstanding more so than having an inadequate social welfare system overall, surely anyone can see that. And of course, as Jack said, the bigger issue than the less than one percent who do abuse the system are those in huge corporations who dodge taxes amounting in the hundreds of millions.
    EDIT: “The harder I work, the more I earn” Funny considering Toff dropped out of university twice. Just saying.

    The 'conservative' here is not really representative of the current Conservative Party or most prospective or dedicated conservative voters. Her poorly articulated but clear Thatcherite ideological leanings have pretty much been eroded out of the party since Cameron's premiership and are now totally obsolete because its current leader is the ultimate Blairite centrist. Grassroots conservative voters like myself with perhaps more similar views to Toff's reluctantly vote for the Conservative Party because there isn't an established right-leaning opposition that appeals to us after UKIP's demise.

    • @WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1
      @WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 7 років тому +12

      Thamer B- I wish your assessment were true but a large proportion of Tory voters I come across really do look down on anyone who is struggling as having either brought it on themselves or being insincere.
      You claim Cameron and May are centrist but there is nothing moderate about hounding people to their deaths with work capability assessments! And Tory voters can hardly complain about a negative image when their attitude amounts to survival of the fittest.
      The average Tory voter for instance regards all welfare claimants as 'lazy dole scroungers' without considering the soul-destroying experience many claimants go through. If unemployment results in 'free money' as Tory voters believe how does that explain the far higher rate of suicides among the unemployed if their life is supposedly so easy? Many people who sign on would rather not precisely because of the social stigma it brings. You are treated as a criminal in everything but name. And the real something for nothing here is forcing people into workfare programmes for a fraction of the minimum wage.
      Sure there are claimants who abuse the system and that is clearly wrong, but it is not an excuse to vilify everyone whose life circumstances lead them with no choice but to sign on.
      But Tory voters are so ideologically blinded by their superior and callous attitudes they seem incapable of trying to consider being in someone else's shoes.
      There are things I agree with the Conservative Party on. I trust them more on crime, national identity and defence but on other social areas, they have a long way to go to shed the image of a 'survival of the fittest' ideology.
      From my perspective the entire mindset of Tory voters is 'I am a taxpayer, why should my money help x, y or z?' It is a vindictive and selfish attitude stirred up by the likes of the Daily Mail and the Sun. These rags take the worst cases of welfare abuse and present it as the norm. And unfortunately Conservative voters are very influenced by this.
      I am not saying all Conservative voters think this way, but most do.
