As a 3 stripe white belt just getting into competition. (Just did my first tournament November 20th) both of these guys look like they would be great to roll with. Really fun to watch.
For positional rolling/sparring we do quick rounds of 2-3 minutes each and take turns attacking/defending. Free rolling is around 3-5 minutes per round and competition training is 5 minutes per round for 8-9 rounds with 60 sec rest in between. Awesome round by the way this was a treat to watch !
We used to do 6 minute rounds but we switched to 8 minute rounds about 3 months ago. I'm 6'2 220lbs so those longer rounds absolutely destroyed me at first but I've learned to pace myself a little more and set up my submission without being worried about rushing to finishing them before the round ends.
I remember the night before Professor Rafael’s seminar a few years back he was at class and we did 9-minute rolls after the instructional hour. Those rounds really let you know where you’re at…
EPIC roll. I'm a stripeless white belt who's been out of training for a week due to a rib cartilage injury, and watching this feels like a Spark Notes summary of several beginner classes. So much better than watching OnlyFans. Thanks!
6 minute rounds for 6 rounds, last round scrimmage (that's usually when I start to cry internally lol). Not counting mat returns (warm ups). Last 6 mins as well but we switch half way through. No rest between. As soon as the round ends. "Switch partners and time on!"
So, my recent focus has been efficient energy expenditure, so I'm down to roll as long as anyone wants to, because my goal is to drain my opponent of their energy while using as little as possible of my own ("He shouldn't feel like I'm fighting him" - Rickson). Anyway, our gym usually does 5 minute open mat rounds, but sometimes we'll do 6 or 10, depending on who's feeling like a hero that day. When I roll at my house, I just go until the other person is exhausted. Or throws up.
5 minutes rounds with 1 minute in-between. We have done a 30 minute round with the same partner (brutal) and on occasion we will do winner stays in specific training!
We normally do 5 minute rounds, but I think 2 or 3 minute rounds are harder. That's because people tend to go full speed the entire 2 or 3 minutes. No time to mess around. We've done 10 minute rounds before, they're kind of fun.
I hate having to stop in a stale mate because a 5 min timer went off. The first gym I trained at, you went till you lost sometimes we would go up to 10 min ➕rolling. It's not over till it's over.
Great video. You guys do heel hook in gi? Isn't that dangerous because the friction makes the escape much harder? Usually in our gun we roll 6 minutes. But I recently found out people are more chill in their rolls during 10 minutes rolls
@Tyler Spangler where do you coach? I was wondering because I like to travel around to different BJJ gyms and get different perspectives on the techniques and how they teach.
My gym does 5-8minute rounds, the 8 minutes are normally "last roll" or if we have a small class and have a chance to roll with everyone. You know you're going to hear collective groans when that's announced lmao
Jiu jitsu seems like a magical thing when you haven't learnt a watched a good amount of jits video but alot of the thing they do still confuse me on how
When I was a young gun in school and had summer breaks I would do 3 classes a day, 4-5 times a week. But yes, other than that, about 2-3 BJJ classes a week
My gym does 6 minutes rounds every day for as many rounds as u can handle. Usually at least 8 or 9 or depends on how many ppl show up really. Great match 👏 👌 👍
Great roll, hunting presently, so I missed commentary ☹️ We do anything from one min escape drills (rapid rotation, abusing blue up with excited white belts, example full back take, hooks in, in seatbelt, "okay try and sub him/her"...BEEP), to 2-3 min passing/retention drills (Passing person pass and secure position, other person defend, sweep, position... reset on established position ASAP until... BEEP). Live rounds are 5 to 7 min. reset on subs 😁 I imagine this is standard?
@@TylerSpangler Got skunked. I'll try again in the morning... We're headed back Sunday... Have 3 more hunts before heading home... I'll let you know how it goes 👍🏼
If you're still watching and haven't liked or commented? That made me smile so here's a comment for the algorithm. That's no white belt! Definitely overdue his promotion...
@@TylerSpangler it helps to push past the normal time limits. The longest I've rolled is for an hour straight, it was a sub only, no time limit format lol the guy was equally skilled. I got him at the end with the Kimura.
4-10min. Mostly 5-6min. People will whine at 8min. When is Matt going to stop sandbagging? He should have gotten his blue belt well over a year ago. Probably 2 years.

I run my Saturday classes like that. A great roll indeed! Thanks for watching
Wow. This was one my the best rolls I’ve seen on UA-cam. Very impressive
Seriously these two did really well
Great rolling, the rushguards are well deserved!
I agree!

Awesome roll and commentary. Thank you
so many transitions in this roll. I learned a ton from this.
Hard to commentate at the speed they were rolling too! Thanks for watching mate
These videos are dope, commentary, notes and slow speed make them very educational 👍🏻👏🏻
These guys are going to kick my butt when I get back. I can't wait
Both did fantastic. Was very surprised to see a white belt pull out that Dela/X guard sweep. Good stuff guys 👊🏻🤙🏻
That was a lot of fun to watch! Thanks!
Excellent roll guys!
Very good roll!
These guys are legit oss great vid 7 min 45 sec break
They worked their butts off. It was great
Such a fun roll to watch!
Thanks b
Learned alot from this roll thanks all action
Such a good roll.
Props to Matt for giving a blue belt wrestling backgrounder a hard time and likewise for Taner's mental toughness as well!

Best one yet imo!

I think short rounds could be fun, but I don’t think the guys at my gym would make it fun lol. I think they would still go really slow
Nice roll!
Good roll fellas

5 min rounds and when I went to comp it was 4 mins, so my cadence was a bit off and I forgot to look at the clock lol.
Dang 4min competition is super short!
my rolling time is 6-7 minutes and 3 or 4 rounds in normal training, in fridays we have the same amount of time but more rounds, usually 6 rounds
We normally do 5 minute rolls. We did 3 minutes yesterday, personally I hate it but I do like having a variety of opponents
@Tyler Spangler where do you coach? I was wondering because I like to travel around to different BJJ gyms and get different perspectives on the techniques and how they teach.
We do anywhere from 4-7 minutes. It depends on who is teaching, their mood, and if anyone has a comp coming up. 5 is probably the most selected.
Big fan of the 7 minutes
7 min in 45 sec out is the best for me
My gym does 5-8minute rounds, the 8 minutes are normally "last roll" or if we have a small class and have a chance to roll with everyone. You know you're going to hear collective groans when that's announced lmao
I would cheer for it. 8 would be awesome. People will need more technique then 😅
8 min lol
I am ok for 3 min but 8 ..yikes
Matt & Tanner are awesome!
The best!
10 round Tuesday.10 rounds 6 minutes each with a 60 second break.
The question on everyone’s mind at PMA in Derry Nh is will you be joining Prof Brock when he comes out to visit soon?
Jiu jitsu seems like a magical thing when you haven't learnt a watched a good amount of jits video but alot of the thing they do still confuse me on how
We have 6min rolls normally but sometimes we do 4min rounds for cardio
If it’s explosive, I like that for shorter rounds
@@TylerSpangler They usually are! I love it
Let’s gooooo Hartley💪🏾
I can’t wait till Matt’s first match at the tournament with the white belt who just signed up after their free trial…
10 minutes is a lot considering I only last about 30 seconds.
You’re being generous with 30
2:51 he really just threw fake punches lol
Always asserting dominance
Another awesome video. We do 6 minutes usually. How many session would you say someone needs to go to a week? I average about 4
I think 3 is good. Honestly I only do 2-3 BJJ sessions on average. And 2 wrestling classes. I teach the wrestling, but still participate as well
@@TylerSpangler would you say that’s what you averaged throughout your career?
When I was a young gun in school and had summer breaks I would do 3 classes a day, 4-5 times a week. But yes, other than that, about 2-3 BJJ classes a week
We normally do 6-6:30 rounds but at Friday open mat they are 8 minutes 😵 and they feel like they are 2x the length of the 6 minute rounds
My gym does 6 minutes rounds every day for as many rounds as u can handle. Usually at least 8 or 9 or depends on how many ppl show up really. Great match 👏 👌 👍
Our rounds are usually 5 min. But we've had 7 min rounds as well.
Are you planning to sell merch
I am indeed! I want to get either rash guards or shirts that say YES GI
@@TylerSpangler I'll get one of each! That would be awesome!!
I'm tired after watching that. Very educational some many possibilities. This old man loves seeing high quality Judo and Jujutsu.
you forgot to say we're doing yes gi today
You caught me
who won the rash guard give away
Still collecting entrants (two weeks to enter)
rolling 7 minute rounds.
usually 5 minutes, unless both guys are spazzing and cant hear anything then they go for 30 minutes or one of them "meets Hades" LMAO
Gotta sacrifice at LEAST one of them
This is what Jiu-Jitsu has become....
Mat is flexibel af
Indeed he is!
In my Gym we never go over 4 minutes of rolling. I go to the beginner's class
Interesting. Too short in my opinion. But every gym is different!
I can‘t believe that this guy is a whitebelt. I wanted to try bjj but now I am not so confident anymore 😂
5 minute rounds rolling. 2 minute rounds for wrestling/takedowns
Honestly hard to believe he's a white belt. Man has skills
One day he will get another stripe
@Tyler Spangler he'll get it when its right. Just giving my opinion as a fellow white belt (doesn't mean shit) but he'd smoke me lol
Great roll, hunting presently, so I missed commentary ☹️

how does a white belt know all these different guards?
Typically we roll 5 min sometimes 7 then there's one coach that doesn't even set the time we just roll until he calls time
You told me to comment so im just doing that.
Thanks mate!
Beast white belt
My gym does 6 mins rolls most of the time.
We do 6 minute rounds.
I like it’
3-5 minutes for our gym.
3 would be so short!
@@TylerSpangler its 3, 5 minute rounds at the end of class or 5, 3 minute rounds.
We do 10 minute rounds
We roll for 6 minutes.
I have a strong feeling this white belt will get his promotion after he dominates all the others in his upcoming tournament 😉
I have a suspicion like that as well 😇
@@TylerSpangler he definitely deserves it, so here's and early congratulations for him!
