I do so wish I could have seen this 4 years ago when I first started using horsehair braid (we call in crin in the UK) for ballroom & latin dresses. I've sewn many miles of it since then like this as well as extending below hems, sometimes folded & curled but have never been entirely satisfied with the different joining methods I've used. I'm going to try your bias tape method but I'll cut bias strips from organza so it's very fine and well camouflaged in case it's glimpsed in spins etc. Thank you very much for the idea!
I really like this video. It's really neat. The fact that the top layer overlaps the outward/top stitch on the horsehair makes it look really good, but what if there were no top layer? Would it still be acceptable in the world of fashion to show that obvious sectioned-off look if it weren't an intentional fashion detail focal point?
Ebony Elice Gray I feel like you could get away with it, but there are probably other tutorials online that would teach this method in a way that didn’t section off the bottom half if you’re worried about it.
Please help me! I have circle skirt and I sew it with horehair braid like you did it in this film. BUT I have a problem when I knocked her inside because it's circle and the top of horsehair edge isn't at the same height along the entire length of the skirt :( SO the seam is uneven on the other side :(
I doubt it- however, you can still use this with tuile fabric, sheer silk or netting, it all depends on the width of your horsehair and the colouring of it. You can get the braid that is specifically for bridal dresses, but this usually quadruples the price; I'd recommend (if you have a white or ivory dress) avoiding the term bridal in your search for it and just go with the nearest matching colour. If you haven't already made it, good luck to you! Edit: I did a little digging and came across this video discussing exactly what you're trying to achieve. I hope it helps. ua-cam.com/video/X7SgDMoebkk/v-deo.html
Hello I have a question if I wanted to see the horse hair on my I wanted to put lining also in the dress how would I cover up the horse hair with the lining, so the horse hair will be inside the dress?
Zipa stewards i mostly do this for peplums. I cut the lining half inch shorter, place them right sides together, sew the horsehair to both fabrics hem from the lining side. Turn over and sew the top of the horsehair to just the lining.
@@omolaraajayi9245 This is the best way. Also, even if it is not lined, I don't leave the horsehair braid exposed like the tutorial shows. Just calculate the length needed to turn it over twice.
Chiffon is designed to have a soft, limp drape, so normally a stiffener like horsehair braid isn’t used. Organza, organdy, satin and other fabrics that have body “marry” with horsehair braid very well. You can even purchase horsehair in different weight...like soft horsehair for something lightweight like organza, and heavy horsehair for fabrics like silk satin.
Hi Have you tried to sew horsehair braid to lycra? I try to make a dance skirt in lycra, but every time the horsehair braid curls. Greetings from norway :-)
Yes, it's much more tricky to sew it into a lycra hem. The crin (braid) I use that's more than 3cm wide has a gathering thread through one edge. I find using that to pull the top edge into a smooth curve before you sew it really helps it to lie as flat as you need to prevent the top edge from creating a visible line on the right side. Is that the problem?
