Pat testing is basically a an earth continuity test and an insulation resistance test . But with a bit more like visual inspection of the power cords plug tops insuring the plug has the correct fuse fitted connection are tight and conductors connected correctly . Also any test instrument except multimeters can be used for pat testing. So long as you know how to use them and you know and understand what the numbers mean and are telling you . And yes your safety and that of everyone around you is your first priority.
Yea well I am taking the 2377 C&G in November and yes the whole thing about FIXED electrical equipment and the testing of is unknown to me. Equipment fixed installations are part of a purpose built circuit so taking them off circuit may not be the fullest way of testing??
Thanks for this, going through 5th Edition training at the moment. Do you have any specific test equipment that you think will work for 5th Edition as most of the older items may not be suitable for testing such items as a hand drier that doesn't typically have a plug fitted.
Hi this is where the competence of the inspector needs to make an informed decision on how to safely test these items. Clearly safe isolation would need to be undertaken to allow the item being tested (a hand dryer in your example) to be disconnect from it's source of supply then a suitable connection needs to be make from the tester to the item being tested. This could potentially be done with a 13A plug to connector block or a mains test block which allow for quickly connecting to the appliance. Care should be taken that the test block does not have any indicator lamps as these may give false readings and that a 13A to 'bare end' lead or similar isn't used as this could be dangerous if plugged into a live 13A socket. @@technicalstageservices thanks a plug was my first thought but seems a bit strange to test it using a different setup then put it back to its hard wired configuration. I suppose the purpose is to identify any issues with the unit rather than the fused connection it would normally be using as its source.
Testing purpose built circuits surely need to be tested in relation to circuit breakers.. this is a practicing electrician's world... so WHERE do I fit in with only 17th edition and L3 C&G... BUT little actual experience and not considered as a "competent person" and gaining my 2377 what work can I do??? will established PAT firms take me on??
