    Hi Matt Just coming to digital art and after many years as a musician and I recognise your comment about 'pencil miles'. Same thing as practising scales and arpeggios - the more you do, the better you become!

    I would also add, just practice and mileage are great, they will get you there, but "just practice" is not the most efficient. Learning gesture and learning how light interacts with color are two completely different goals, and to get better at them specifically, you'll have to come up with specific exercises that train this exact thing. Sure, you will be getting better at both when painting a series of finished paintings, but much slower, as you will be dealing with everything at once. What I did is find a roadmap, read a lot of theory, come up with specific practice exercises for all the fundamentals, and do a lot of small studies.
    For example, to learn perspective I read "How to draw" and "Framed Perspective", watched a lot of videos and found an exercise: take a photo of a simple real life object and try to draw the basic forms on top. Your goal is to understand how the theory you learned applies here: figure out the horizon line, how the object is rotated relative to the camera, where does the foreshortening occur and how does it relate to vanishing points. When you get better at it, try to draw them aside of the photo while looking at it. Then try to just take a look at the object and replicate the form without constantly looking at the reference. I did not try to render or color these, and I started with things like a tissue box and my cup, and now I can draw human mannequins in the poses I want, briefly looking up some reference. It only took a couple of months of studies.
    Right now I am learning how to create blending, texture and nuance in reflected light and halftone. Your videos are an immense help with the techniques of doing this with Photoshop, despite being almost a decade old. Thank you so much.

    Hey Matt I don't really like to use layers or selection tools that much, there's a bunch of good artists who use neither so it's certainly possible but I'm wondering if you know any methods for rendering cleanly without the heavy reliance on layers/selections/alpha locks that you could share?
    Would mean a lot.

      Hehe I think it is a hard round brush lol it's just that the opacity is lowered that made is look soft if that makes sense....

    • @bambooindark1

      stop using photoshop, but use krita for painting.
      photoshop is not good at painting.

    • @bambooindark1
      @bambooindark1 8 років тому +8

      photoshop is multi function image manipulate software, not specialist in specific area.
      When it comes to only drawing, there are more software do better job than photoshop.
      But Krita is open source that's why I nominate here.

    • @FragMentEditing
      @FragMentEditing 8 років тому +12

      Wrong, photoshop is very good for painting. It's the industry standard used by concept artists like Feng Zhu.

    • @MaricMirna
      @MaricMirna 7 років тому +9

      I had the same problem and then I realized that I've been using hard round brush instead of a soft round brush. Try soft round brush with shape dynamics and transfer with pen pressure on.

    • @ShadyKO
      @ShadyKO 7 років тому +4

      Actually, Photoshop is the industry standard for concept art and all other drawing needs e.g. creating textures for 3D models. Being a Game Art student, we get the industry standard programs out of the way in the first term of the course.

      It may not be the same for you but from my own experience of searching for the perfect settings, I've ended understanding my troubles cames mostly from my lack of practice or my lack of understanding some concept like getting the right values and shapes.

    This looks like a beginner tutorial, but I think it's very important to show us what brush you are using. It's very difficult or impossible for a beginner to reproduce this brush and the beginner will be frustrated. I had to switch from Photoshop to CorelPainter and used Real 2B Pencil to get better result than with photoshop default brushes.
    Please show us how to create the brush you use in this tutorial and explain why it gives better result than default ones.

      Thanks, Matt. I can see now you have a link to the library in the video description but I didn't go there until you pointed it out in your comment. The library looks nice and solid and I've started my journey! But still, can you please help me and other people who will watch this video and wonder about the brush? I mean could you describe the brush you were using in this video? I tried the brushes on this page: www.ctrlpaint.com/brushes but they look different.
