    This is exactly what I want to do with my Geekom 11390H based mini-pc. I have been unsuccessful passing thru the integrated graphics.
    I would love to see a video from you showing how to pass thru the integrated graphics.
    Always great videos... thanks!

    The GT 1030 passed through to a VM is quite meaningless unless you are connecting a display directly to the GT 1030, since the GT 1030 does not have an encoder and trying to access the VM using any remote access software (like moonlight/sunshine or nomachine) would mean the vCPU ends up doing the video encoding work. So for the way it is done in this video, it works. But if you are going to remotely access the VM, you will end up with no hardware video encoding. I know... because I used to do this with a GT 1030 and learned the hard way.

    • @kf4hqf2
      @kf4hqf2 6 місяців тому +1

      It's not meaningless. There are plenty of use cases for GPU acceleration that don't involve video encoding. He showed one, and CAD software like Fusion 360 would be another. Also RDP will certainly work in those use cases for remote access and GPU acceleration works fine. I know because this is what I do as a solution for Fusion. Just because it doesn't fit your use case doesn't mean it's "meaningless".

    • @vng
      @vng 6 місяців тому +1

      Don't get me wrong. I am not saying GPU passthrough is useless. I use it all the time too. I am just saying that the GT 1030 is kind of limited in its capabilities due to the lack of a hardware encoder. Of course, if the use case does not need a hardware encoder, it works fine.

      @@vng I'm not sure if there's widespread support for encoder acceleration on vms as well.

      This is v gpu or just gpu accelerated vm and not the entire pcie pass through right?

    I find it crazy how when new hardware comes out, all the tech channels do their own reviews on them so the company can make money. Lately it seems to be the MS-01 and the UGreen NAS.

    you can also do sr-iov on the integrated gpu (10 or so vms) via a patched i915 integrated gpu driver if you don't want/need the resources of a standalone gpu. there's also a patched driver for pascal cards that allows for sr-iov as well, but I don't think you could fit one into one of those minisforum machines due to space.

      @@jothain I think this gpu passthrough method lets you use the gpu for your vm without losing control/use of it on the host os.
      Thus, mah guy probably wants less clutter, and simultaneously switch between the oses or host os to vm on the go for different tasks. Wtihout having to have a bajillion keyboard and mice.

      @@yasirrakhurrafat1142 No, actual passthrough isn't possible. It's stated in video. PCI card disables onboard graphics so you can't passthrough GPU. Virtualized graphics is completely different thing.

    In a practical sense how much of the GPU's actual power is available to the VM? For example if you have a headless server with a GPU whacked in to perform AI engine calculations would this be on par with a non-VM'd (straight to baremetal) installation for the GPU performance? Probably an unfair question unless it's tested side by side on equivalent hardware I guess.
    Also that's a big/little core design chip isn't it? If so how does Proxmox handle the big/little split for VCPU allocations?

    • @alexstone691
      @alexstone691 6 місяців тому +3

      There's very little overhead in this case at least for the GPU, as it is passed fully through to the VM and the host cannot use only the VM

    • @nectarinetangerineorange

      Igpu can't be passed through due to firmware limitations, the physical wiring in the circuitry of the motherboard and the CPU, and IOMMU groupings.
      It is possible to slice a gpu into segments, but you need the correct driver. For AMD and Nvidia, this means purchasing a workstation grade GPU certified for this function ( ie a GPU used for enterprise vdi)
      Intel drivers allow this on many igpus but not all, I think they allow it on the "alchemist" cards, and I know they have a product called Intel flex which is specifically designed for vdi, so, and compute (it can be split into 31 vgpus if I remember correctly)
      You just can't do it with consumer AMD or Nvidia cards
      If you use qemu+kvm there is software called virgl (virtual graphics layer) which allows some rendering to be performed on the hosts GPU without passthrough, and it works really well (your not gonna be playing AAA games with this, but you get accelerated desktop and basic media functionality, and it's not that much overhead-- way better than pure software rendering)
      Have fun hacking

    Sadly, integrated GPUs do not output any images. It rarely works. I have tried various iGPUs (ESXi and Proxmox). Passthrough does work in principle, but there is no image output. So for a headless sever setup which uses iGPU through passthrough and needs graphics acceleration (e.g. Plex) its nice.

Let alone that not a single word is mentioned about hardware requirements for passthrough to work as you can't do this on mmuch of the older hardware.
