  • Quake II is a first-person shooter video game released in December 1997. It was developed by id Software and published by Activision. It is not a direct sequel to Quake; id decided to revert to an existing trademark when the game's fast-paced, tactile feel felt closer to a Quake game than a new franchise.[4] The game is followed by Quake IV.

    A few years back, I was playing this, Goldeneye, and others with friends. None of us were even alive when the N64 was out and being supported, and I was really the only devout retro gamer among the group. That era of couch multiplayer gaming is one that I miss greatly. Unfortunately i have since moved away from those, we were in high school at the time after all, and now that we aren't we've gone our separate ways, not to mention the past two years made getting together hard.

      I miss gaming on the couch with my buddies and pizza too man, current online only multiplayer is easier for some people, but it’s not the same.

    Aubrey Hodges did the music for this, Quake 64, and Doom 64. He did a really good job, and has a bandcamp page where you can get the soundtracks.

    First Quake game I ever owned essentially my introduction to the series. Still own this game I believe we got it for N64 in about 1999 or 2000 scared the shit out of me as a kid. I didn’t gain the courage to play it until I was 8 and finally beat it. Back then I didn’t know there were such things like “ports” the N64 version was what I got and it’s all I knew. Makes me tear up knowing people played this version and ever though we didn’t experience the true final boss we still had a blast. It’s great seeing people still playing this game today!

    I think it would be interesting if you did some N64 graphics comparisons for games that utilize the expansion pack. To see the difference side by side would be awesome.

    1:43 The plot actually goes like this. You are Bitterman, a space marine sent to the planet Stroggos to stop the Strogg's operations, but you crash and are sent far away from where you were supposed to go; as a change of plans you are ordered to find a way to Stroggos's moon and destroy the core which is an important location to the Strogg. At least that's my interpretation because I don't have an instruction manual.

    I used to be very hard on this game - however when you put into context it was crammed into a meagre amount of cart space Raster did an amazing job. It runs smooth and it runs on Quake engine unlike the other console ports in it's day.

  • @NexusArtRealm

    Absolutely love this game. There was only one drawback in it, for me. No ending sequence. While it doesn't bother me much today, back then, I was pretty disappointed that there was no incentive, after defeating the last boss (which was very difficult on the hard setting). No cool cinematic sequence (or at least panel art). Just a congratulations and the credits rolled up. lol
    That aside, the game is thoroughly enjoyable. It has a very creepy vibe about it, thanks to the creepy ambient sounds, rather than the rock/techno music found in the pc version.
    Due to the n64 play mechanics, you were forced to play this one, slow and steadily, which actually wasn't a bad thing.. If you run inside a corridor foolishly and you happen to run into a Gladiator or the Tank bot...you're in for it.
    This is the kind of game, you should breath in, take your time and let it sort of creep you out. If you go into this running around, moving through it as quick as you can, then you've killed more than half of the fun experience, imho.

      Nar Comic Underworld I am playing through the game right now and finding it really difficult with the n64 controller. The aiming and movement accelerations makes it hard for me. I am playing it like a chess game like you mentioned; one room at a time, lining the enemy up with a wall or doorway. This also makes it quite scary.

    I just added this game to my collection yesterday based solely off your review. A local game store had a 30% off games under $20, and of course, N64 loose carts didn't have many options (at least ones I didn't already own that I wanted). I got this game in good condition for $10 when all was said and done after recalling your review that this one was notably good. Thanks again for informing so many others which N64 games are worthwhile!

    Great review Glenn, I love Quake II, easily one of my favorite FPS. I never played the PC game back in the day but I did try it on the original Playstation and loved it. I later got Quake 4 for the 360 and it included Quake II on the bonus disc. Quake II is a great FPS and I would recommend it to anyone look for a very straight forward FPS.

    I always wondered why the gun animations where so choppy, yet in the PSX and PC versions they are really smooth.

    • @marvinalexander7097
      @marvinalexander7097 3 роки тому +2

      the weapon animation is choppy is because quake 2 for the n64 did not use the quake 2 engine but a modified quake (1)64 engine ,hence why the animation is choppy because the there is no keyframes animation interpolation on the original quake engine,i can only assume they forgot since the ps1 version have keyframes animation interpolation.
      But wait,why did they remember to modified the engine and make everything better and look like quake 2 but forget to add animation interpolation ?.

    This game is awesome! This is one of the best shooters for N64 (along with goldeneye).The Multiplayer you will play for hours and hours and has lots of mods to play like Capture The Flag,Team Battle,Free-for-all, and Deathtag.If you have an expansion pack, you can experience the full lighting glory of this game.The only thing bad about this game is that if you have the PC version, you might not like the N64 version because the game it totally different from the PC version.

  • @StabStabStabStabby
    @StabStabStabStabby 3 роки тому +2

    The reason this is so radically different from the pc version is because the n64 console couldn't run the quake 2 engine so the team rebuilt the game in the same quake engine used for quake 1 on the console.

    Midway was suppose to include a multiplayer mode on Doom 64 but due to some problems "with the developers kit" they actually post-pponned that to Quake 64, but again they failed to keep a good quality. It was only on Quake II that finally they could get this done, it was almost a 3 year journey to make this mode actually work.

    Great channel, once again. This is taking me back to the days of going into EBX store at the Hillsdale mall in San Mateo CA growing up. Even though I bought an N64, I could barely buy any games cuz they were so expensive. So I loved just looking at all the boxes. Your videos are a cool way to look at everything I missed.
    Although Quake 2 I did own, but I remember so little. I must have barely ever played it.
    They also remind me of what I didn’t like about N64. They always seemed low Rez and slow choppy experiences. N64 was cool at launch, but I am honest when I say I was looking forward to it being replaced as soon as possible. Especially after Dreamcast launched and I was once again my Sega fanboy self

    This and GoldenEye ARE THE SHIT! I fucks with this game, man. I was honestly shocked to see that the original version was so different (because I played the N64 version first), yet it was wonderful to know that they were two different, yet VERY good games. Nintendo should reach out to Bethesda and id Software to have this game remastered on their consoles for Wii U and NX being such a unique exclusive. I'd totally play it again, and with online multiplayer! If they had a remastered edition of this game as a launch title, I'd buy the NX IMMEDIATELY.

    I actually grew up with this version of Quake II on the N64, alongside Rainbow Six and GoldenEye 007. I will always love this version of the game for its moody atmosphere and levels unique to the console. I never got to play the multiplayer with anyone though, and my dad never got an expansion pak for his N64, so I had to suffer with a lower framerate on this and Turok 2. Not that it bothered it me at the time, however. I guess I was more willing to get past the lower framerate back then as opposed to today.

    I recently started playing this and I like just about everything in this game exept for the controls. It feels like there´s a constant delay on everything I do. Sometimes I have to hold the button down for a second and a half for the shotgun fo fire at all. I tried the first Quake just to check if it´s the tv but that one works perfectly fine.

    I played this a few times at family get togethers when it was new but I didn't beat it until I finished the N64 version on the Remaster last night. One thing I actually prefer over the PC version is that the N64 version follows the example of the original Quake II PC expansions and starts the player right next to a Shotgun. Shotguns are among my favorite gaming weapons and when I first played the PC version of Quake II I was disappointed because I expected to start with a Shotgun like in Quake I. Even worse I managed to miss the Shotgun in the PC version's opening area so I didn't find one until I got to the third area. Once a friend showed me where the first area Shotgun was I made sure to memorize its location for future playthroughs.

    I was obsessed with the upcoming Perfect Dark at the time, which fortunately managed to end up better than Goldeneye in every way that mattered to me (and became a million seller in it's own right), so it was worth it. However, now that I know Quake II 64 was an original game, I want it.

    I never got around to playing the Quake games. I was always playing Goldeneye, TWINE, or Turok 2 when it came to first person shooters. It looks so different than those titles.

    Quake 2 on the N64 was fantastic and imo the new campaign is better than the PC version's campaign which I thought sucked pretty bad. Back in the late 90's I played Quake 2 on the N64 for the single-player experience and Quake 2 on my PC for the free for all experience lol, and of course the grappling hook mod lol

    *Sigh* I remember the days when ports had exclusives to lure you to one port or the other... why can't we get that nowadays? Like.... I can't think of a good example right now, but SOME multi-console port release like... something... could have an exclusive level or plot. Sort of like how the Playstation version of Doom was more atmospheric, and had one or 2 exclusive levels, albeit because of console limitations but they were still exclusive levels.

    • @CntrazZombie4
      @CntrazZombie4 8 років тому

      OR EVEN DOOM 64! Where there was a whole new game (albeit with a new plot taking place after the events of DOOM II)

    I once looked up to see if someone ported or remade the N64 levels as a mod for the PC version and it looks like so far only the early missions got remade, while the rest are sorta stuck in limbo. Might try seeing if I can find a cart for cheap one day and plug the old N64 into the CRT I still keep around specifically for older games.

    at the time EVERYONE was playing the original and quake 2 on the pc, and they all thought this was just a port. Most Console Ports at the time were poor, or a graphical downgrade... So I'm shocked to see this was actually good

    I just picked this up for $1.71 on craigslist. I like it a lot but not near as much as Doom 64. I paid much more for Doom but the nostalgia and new levels plus creepy atmosphere and music put this way ahead of Quake 2

  • @CyriuX7

    I always preferred the soundtrack of this version over the original PC since I think it does goes well with overall universe and the concept of fighting lifeless cyborg enemies, as well of giving it a very cold and depressing atmosphere. As for the game itself, I always thought that this particular version of Quake II felt just right, in the sense of being solid, well designed, and balanced. My only tick is the lack of a true final boss, you just fight 4 powerful stroggs but no actual final mastermind or such. But overall, excellent version.

    this was a good contender. considering i was play quake 1 and 2 on the PC and disappointed in Quake 1 for 64 also - The PS1 Quake 2 is similar to this version with a few changed exclusives. i like how quake 2 64 also samples some level design from the pc too so things are familiar still for quake pros.

Dididnt get shit for it and i had just paid 55 for it.

    I had no idea Quake 2 64 and Doom 64 were their own games, I thought they were direct ports of the PC versions which I had. I saw them sitting on the shelf in the shop for years and never bothered picking them up because of this. Too bad, I'm sure I would have loved them as a kid.

    For the longest time I avoided this port of Quake II thinking it was the worst and the PS1 being the best console port for the time since it followed the PC version a bit closer. Now after seeing this, I might pick this up for my N64 since this seems like a different Quake II experience entirely, that ambient music is pretty good not going to lie.
