I hope I'm wrong but what I see in Coach Smith is a guy that probably wishes he had held out a little longer and gotten the Washington job.
Bill O'Brien left the job at OSU to be closer to his family, so he was never entertaining any other offers and would not have accepted any position at MSU. Who knows, maybe they did reach out, but it was a non-starter to be anywhere else.

Michigan- DISAPPOINTING, because the O-line struggled, we had mediocre QB play, and Don didn't have a good game. But I see no reason to panic. Remember- Michigan didn't really impress against ECU in last seasons opener. The play calling was vanilla, but in all fairness I don't think they wanted to show too much with Texas waiting next week. And...(I know Valenti doesn't want to hear THIS)...Fresno St is actually a decent team. Not top tier or blue blood, but they know who they are, they have chemistry, and they command respect at several positions. Michigan needed a wake up call to see where they are deficient, and hopefully they will be locked in and ready for the Longhorns.

STOP! Yes Fresno won 9 games last year but who did they beat? Competition matters. They beat the likes of Eastern WA, UNLV, Utah State, and Kent State. Their hard games last year were Purdue, Boise State, and Wyoming.
