Hey guys, in this video we will show you how to make headlight clear. We got this 2003 AUDI TT at the shop and one of the headlight has been replaced so we will try to buff the old one and make it close to new looking. We never use clearcoat because it can cause plastic burn.
For this headlight restoration we used, wet sandpaper, 3m perfect it series rubbing compound and 3m perfect it series machine polish. We used a polishing pad and buffer.
Let us know what you think.

The sandpaper grit is the take away for me so thanks in that regard. I just finished a mild and brief polish of my own headlights while changing the bulbs. The assemblies have to be removed from the car so I thought why not. They're in good shape but show some yellowing at the top. I used an inexpensive Fast Brite kit I had lying around. I already have an inexpensive automotive orbital buffer from Harbor Freight. I rubbed the lights in accordance with the instructions and they came out better, but when I put the Meguiars paste wax I use for the car on them and ran the buffer over them they really came out nice. The only thing missing is a UV clear coat which would have made them shine like new.
I plan to redo them with a 2000 grit sandpaper prep since they're only lightly affected now and then check with an auto body shop about taking a moment just before or after a paint job to hit them with pro grade clear that is already mixed for a paint job. I believe they'd do it for a reasonable fee. The clear would lay down flatter coming from a pro paint gun than a rattle can and the environment conditions would be more ideal. If your headlights are not that expensive & the car is going to be with you for a long time, just buy a new set. Mine cost way too much to do that next to restoration costs.
You guys did a great job, however I wouldn't let you do my car without guaranteeing a better tape job than that and you dodged a wide angle view at the end that would have permitted seeing both headlights at the same time for a better assessment of how close the lens was restored to new. You don't want to leave potential customers expecting better than the actual results.

    (1) Rotary Polisher Pads should not be used for compound & polish, you need 2 or 3 pads. (2) Be careful to keep the polishing pad moving across the headlight lens, too slow or stopped in one spot, the friction of the pad will heat up the Lexan headlight lens & melt the surface.. Must always keep the rotating pad moving up down right to left..

yes that is the best long term solution, unless they like to wax and seal every 2 weeks.

Should use the proper buffer pads, White for compound and black for polish. At the very least change pads between products, you used rubbing compound on it twice even though you tried to polish it the second time. Sanding and shooting with a quality clear with UV protection will result in the same outcome.

Headlight need to paint with lacquer(clear). and the fact that you polish this is an unfinished repair, a cheap repair option ...
