The USMC used to make "us" start out as mechanics, so we knew the bird inside and out before we got our wings. Now, they just make "shake n' bake" crew chiefs. Not a good strategy. No offense to your grandson.
If you’ve never been inside one of these masterpieces of engineering, or at least stood near one, then you really have no concept of just how HUGE these helicopters are. 55 fully equipped Marines, with all of their gear, fit INSIDE one of these. They are truly awe inspiring.
There is NO Helo that can do what the 53 can do! It is that simple. I flew 53 D models and went 210 Kts. w/ 10 people and 2 internal tanks inside. Only problem was they required 35 plus man hrs. of labor per FLITE Hr. The USMC has flown them since 1967 ! 110 Million is a LOT of money. Sikorsky Designers WERE good once upon a time! We will know more in due time. Semper Fi.

Ja, und ich muss sagen, dass mich der Camcorder sehr positiv überrascht hat. Ist wirklich ein tolles Teil (vor allem das Stabi System). Habe auch einige Vorführungen freihand gefilmt, die Qualität ist fast die selbe wie mit Stativ. :-)

Sieht man jetzt im Video vielleicht nicht, aber es gab ständig Regen, Hagelschauer und stürmische bis Orkanartige Böen (etliche Vorführungen wurden deshalb auch gecancelt, so wie heute die Displays von der Patrulla Aguila, und vom Eurofighter). Die Aufnahmen vom CH-53K wurden zwar mit einer Sony AX53 gemacht, gelangen aber auch nur so gut durch den Einsatz eines schweren Stativs. Morgen und die nächsten Tage folgen weitere ILA Videos ( von IL-2, A350, Bundeswehr Demos etc.)
$100+ million a unit ($125 for 200 units for marines, according to wiki) WOW a price. Russian Mi-26 bigger heli, less maneuvrable, but carries much more payload - $20-25 million. )))
Twist & Turn/ Crash & Burn u great big beautiful Shitter! I was a CH53D Crew chief in The USMC 1970 to 76. Got about 450 flite hours. YES, I was in RVN 1972 thru all of 73. Served on 4 LPH's. #3/10/11 & 12. Sailors got the life, GOOD food 2. Semper Fi.
I worked and crewed on the CH-53D model in U.S.M.C. at New River M.C.A.S. in the early 80's.That was designated the " Sea Stallion " then the E model " "Super" and now K revision "King Stallion". Sure don't make me feel any younger. LOL. Good solid Sikorsky design. Semper Fi
I worked and crewed on the CH-53E Super Stallions at New River MCAS in 1984 with HMH-464. You are right, now that they are retiring the 53E's I feel old as they were brand new when I was flying on them.
Hmm, I've wondered too. I suspect it's something with either preventing the rotors from hitting each other, or (more likely), to prevent the rotor wash from the 2 rotors from interfering and creating a lot of noise. Sorry that I didn't type in french, I've only learned french for 1 year so I can't really type it yet.

"What's wrong Hal?" "Dave, I'm afraid." "Don't worry Hal, something's going to happen." "What Dave?" "Something wonderful! Some Cobras, armed Sea Hawks, and even some Hornets, with some major firepower, will be watching our butts! So, you ready to go now, Hal? "Dave,,, YOU BET!"
i honestly don't think this was very impressive. For starters, the hands-off landing was hands on and you can clearly see aircrew hands on the cyclic. The auto hover still had plenty of drift. Either this display was screwed up, narrated wrong or this aircraft is advertising capabilities it doesn't possess. How many Chinooks can be bought for the price of one CH-53K?
Mi-26 and CH-53K have almost the same power, about 22,000 hp combined. Yet, Mi-26 only has two engines and CH-53K has three, so per engine Mi-26 has more power.

Yes, the Mi-26 is huge, but parts for it is becoming very very rare every day, making fixing it more harder.
