if you really want to cut the cars, just seperate them in 2, and fill the inside with red emissive material so it looks like molted metal with the bloom
Regarding your point at 3:00, this is where i would use the stencil shader and a portal mask together. Im sure you can find something online but youre looking for a shader for the car that discards fragments based on the stencil buffer. Just swap the material for the car to the masked car stencil on enter, then the car should slowly "disapear" based on the depth from the portal. Good luck with this though, love the vibe
2:47 - About the teleport issue with the car: It looks like you're destroying the clone right after teleport, Maybe just make the traveler track a current portal, and only destroy the clone when the current portal is null.
I have an idea to add to the portals. What if you have another way on how the cars can get “fixed”. What I mean is, what every now and then, some tentacle or something with reach out and grab the car. The tentacles could be from like some portal monster.

I find it comical that we'll be able to use large scale quantum portals, a marvel of science that would probably cost millions to produce... for car traffic... and I love it, this game just gets better and better lol.

Suggestion related to the tsunami, instead if having it be based off CO² you could add a mining industry to export raw materials and if you drill too much it can cause earthquakes and then by proxy a tsunami, an idea for the CO² could be it could cause acid rain and increase the chance for forest fires, I think personally I'd be cool to have different natural disasters however have there be ways to avoid them unlike other city planners such as City Skylines, however you could add hitches such as coap power stations being cheaper to build and run than greener options however they increase the chances for things like acid rain or forest fires, and the mining could be a risk v reward type thing where its highly profitable however you run the risk of a tsunami (these are all just suggestions and im only saying because they make a bit more sense scientifically, then again you do have portals so...)
Actually a great idea because someone kindly pointed out under the last devlog that tsunamis are mostly random and not really influenced much by CO². I also like the idea of the acid rain and yeah I didn't want disasters to be completely random because that just seems punishing and there of course has to be some sort of incentive to use more dangerous buildings. Just make stuff caught in the middle explode man... Sounds way cooler, and like a great opportunity for some excessive blue and purple space-y particle effects you can show off in the game trailer to show off color variety and effect variety, etc...
I think your idea for chopping cars in half when a portal is destroyed is a fine idea even if you don't want to model the inside, just don't make the inside hollow. No modeling required and it kind of matches the aesthetic of the game already imo.
I think, if you're gonna stick with the "Quantum entanglement " route of the cars just bugging, i would suggest the landfill should be changed to a super high tech, anti-quantum-entanglement base, and have the cars be dropped in some kind of chamber, where it then gets fixed. In all honesty, having the cars get split, would still be better
Maybe keep the cars splitting when a portal breaks, but i stead of revealing a modeled inside it's just a flat plane colored either black or like the car

My suggestion: continue this series, because it's so incredibly interesting! Insanely underrated imo
You could try and slice the car and add a polygon face or smth where the slice happens when the portal turns off.
Can't wait to see it all take place in a centrifugal orbital station, or amongst the floating islands, or in a non-euclidean geometry next
