People used to wear their clothes to the grave and just modify them to fit better and follow the current fashion every few years, and once they got too small for alterations they just passed them down to younger siblings and family members. Even rich people did this. If last years' ballgown didn't really fit you anymore or was a bit too vintage for your taste, you'd repurpose it into a teagown! And you could ask your maid to remove the trim from your sister's old opera gown to put it on yours because she didn't need it anymore. The fast fashion industry has changed the way we look at clothes and definitely helped make it accessible to people that can't afford expensive stuff but it also considerably worsened the quality so if you can afford it, invest in better quality and learn how to mend. I won't pretend they did everything right in the past because it wasn't the case but that is definitely something we should pick up again
