My husband and his father are also first generation immigrants. They are a different breed of people. Whatever it takes to make it is what they'll do. His dad recently said he's just happy to be in America. I, as a woman, feel so grateful for my husband's talents and abilities and the drive that he has to do hard work. There is still manly men today but we are all so dumbed down compared to back in the day. Today you see kids spending hours playing video games and smoking weed. This releases dopamine in the brain that makes us feel like we progressing. Kids don't go outside anymore and interact with people. You got to feel pain and suffer in order to grow. Old school men faced tough times and you know what they say, Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. Keep working on yourself and last point: you dont need to know a trade to be considered a real men.

This take is so detached from this current generation. So we are just gonna ignore that plenty of kids still suffer and feel pain but not always physically. My dad passed from suicide in 2015. My dad moved to England in the early mid eighty's and he worked a few jobs over there. I wasn't sure what as he didn't share and I didn't really ask the details and he told me before that he worked his job and he lost it and he had to sleep in train stations and stuff shortly before returning home. He wanted to come back home to Ireland but he had little to no money and he told me that he snuck on a ferry back to Dublin and he had enough change in his pocket to ring our family in Cork on a payphone to get a lift home from Dublin to Cork. (Dublin is the east and Cork is in the south) that was when he met my mam at a house party and yeah that's a snippet of many stories I have of him. I somewhat agree with this sentiment. But I’d also add that the skills we learn today to be successful men can be very different. I can build severs, networks, virtual environments or fix your home PC or mobile device. Those things didn’t exist when our dads were coming up. Never the less since I hit my 30s I’ve been applying myself to more traditional masculine skills. Took a second job as a roofer last summer. Learned how to change my brake pads, rotors, oil. Learned how to take my bicycle apart and put it back together, patch/change the tubes ect. It’s all basic stuff really but can be a challenge to figure out on your own. I felt like a king after fixing my brakes lol very satisfying. I wish today that my dad or any of my step dads (ikr) had been around to teach me all this as a teenager. Such is life though.

The men of the past 2 decades of course have more physical education than the current generation they understood hardwork. What makes no sense to me is that the men now talking on this topic have made more money than any past generation, by simply talking about their fathers. I love it don't get me wrong, however, there needs to be a point when their fathers have a story as well on this podcast. I'd pay money to hear those men speak about the upbringing of these voices of our generation.

Evolution can be a good and bad thing. We as humans just keep making things easier on ourselves. I just happened to have a few life changing experiences that kind of kept me old school. Me as a father of 3, I have to work hard to take care of my family. I have no choice, besides to give up and that is not an option. People do what they have to do. You guys seem to be doing good for yourselves. That is what we as fathers want for our kids, especially when we have to break our backs to get by. 42 years old Sunday and been busting my ass since I was 15. Hurts brother. Enjoy your life that you have made for yourself. There is way more to being a man than breaking your back. I struggle to pay my bills and I am still one of the happiest people I know. I have an awesome wife and 3 cool but different kids. I am proud of all of them. Just a way easier world for some and not so much for others. Do what makes you happy and you will be alright. You are still a man, just very fortunate to have done so well. Now you can hire people like me to do what you need done. To be honest, that is what I want for my children. I don't want them to struggle like me. So congratulations to y'all. Keep making all that money boys. You will need it. I just hope people like me can afford to buy gas next month. I need to be able to get to work. Challenging times. Good luck to all of you!

I'm a 21 year old engineer, I've worked construction and farming for almost 10 years now (8 years) I've done everything from roads to houses. To say our generation has no "manly men" is very particular to your situation. I've been in the hay mowned for 16 hours at a time, paving roads all summer standing on 300+ degrees C asphalt. I wouldn't say generalizing a whole generation based on the fact that your experience is far different is fair. As someone who's worked hard for everything I have its kind of a piss off, I've worked with a lot of kids in and around my age and sure a fair number of them were pussies but some of them were the hardest workers on the job site. Given im an engineer now so i do not work near as hard but that was my choice, i make 5× more money and dont work near as hard. Its all in how you were brought up, living in the remote country far from any cities I'd say that your preaching a false narrative.

So a “manly man” is a father who beats his kids because he has such a slender grasp on parenting and psychology that he has no idea what else to do? Being manly doesn’t have to be this cartoonish stereotypical depiction. To me being a man means working on yourself, being self aware, tackling your insecurities, and not letting your insecurities lead you to hurting others. Being strong doesnt have to be externally expressed in such a stereotypical way. In a way what y’all are describing isn’t masculinity. It’s insecure men hurting their own kids and needing to hide their insecurities by acting “masculine.”

i can relate to that but only partially because i don't think there are insecurities in most of "our dads". Those old days were just different and that's why "our dads" just repeat what they have been experiencing on their own back then.

My dad was an accountant not tbe best handy man. My uncle worked in piping welding and an all around construction worker. I worked for him since 12 years old. He taught me how to use a drill, install things, measurs, cut, and i will always appriciate him for it. Now i help my dad around the house cause hes a bit older now and isnt as handy.
