Big thank you to John for the loan of his lovely watch! A real sweetie this one. Definitely the best of the Explorer homages that I have encountered so far. I'm seriously tempted to pick one up, possibly the white dial, at the next restock. 36mm is great for me, but don't forget they also do a 40mm. Cheers, Jody

Jody: Thanks for reviewing the Smith's Everest. I recently waited and saved up and purchased the cream-face Smith's Everest Expedition 36mm and love it. This one is an homage to the Smith's Hillary carried to the top, except that the one e carried had the seconds hand dial at 6 o'clock. However, when Hillary decided to explore across Antarctica a couple years later he wore, not a Rolex, BUT a Smith's which looked just like this one, including the central seconds hand. This one keeps great time, fits my 6.5 in wrist well, and i wear it often. I had a Rolex 1016 purchased new in 1986, but gifted it to my daughter a few years ago. This Smith's scratches the itch! Keep doing what you do so well. I'd like to add a photo but cannot figure out how to do so. Thanks again, Mark

I managed to secure one of these from the last time it was stocked. It’s been on my wrist for the last 2 weeks and I love it. It’s my first experience with a 36mm watch and I think it suits my 6.75in wrist perfectly. Mine runs at about -1 to -3 seconds a day, can not complain!! The lume lasts through the night. I’ve been wearing it all night long, much to my wife’s chagrin, and it is always readable. 👍👍

Nice one beautiful watch , my very first watch as a 1o year old back in 1975 was a Smiths boys watch black with luminous hands and a timer bezel , unfortunately i took this watch in the bath to bed and never took it off and beat it to death but what a watch.
Have a Smiths vintage peace from the late 70s now that during their last hoorah was made in Japan still looks good and goes like a trooper.

I don't mind homage watches - but it's a homage of the wrong watch! With "Smiths" on the dial it should be a creamy-coloured small seconds homage of the De Luxe, which was a pretty nice watch. The world is full of Rx homages.

I almost ended up owning a vintage gold cased Smiths watch - one left to me by my Grandfather but worn to death by my Father. He left me the £12 Casio with big numbers that he wore in his dotage. Somehow I feel like I've lost out... My Grandfather's Smiths' was a square design dating from around the time of the first assent of Everest and for some reason I've had a hankering for a good square watch for well over half a century...

@@robworthington7431 The PRS36 is a close match, but the dial finish is brushed metal. The original de Luxe was enamel. The cases are also different, PRS36 has distinctive corners while the de Luxe was round. I think the Bambino comes closer, despite the missing numbers. Apart from the Orient there are some Timex that are close - Fairfield or Waterbury retro lines.

I have a left wrist that is 8" (used to be 8.25") and own a Tiger Concept 36mm 1016 homage. I bought it as I was worried about how a 90s Rolex Explorer (saving up) might look and feel on me. I can confirm that there is nothing to worry about. The watch looks and feels great on my wrist. I can't stress enough that us people with chunky wrists need to stop worrying... 36mm is a great watch size. Anything larger than 40mm that isn't either for 200m+ diving or has multiple complications (like a chrono) is nearing excessive. 36mm suits a dress watch as well as a rugged sports\field watch with 50m to 100m water resistance being ample.

Beauty piece, I pulled the trigger on one of these about 6 months ago, the store opens & closes quickly so be ready. After some lackadaisical grabbing of my C-card I finally moved quick enough to grab one and when it arrived I was even more impressed with it up close. Super solid watch, slick looking piece with some cool history behind it. It’s understated but gets plenty of attention from watch guys to my wife even regular joe’s that don’t care to much about watches ask about it.
Love the 9 series Miyota which runs smooth, fit and finish are on point as well. Definitely a go to piece for all sorts of occasions that you won’t regret. Thanks again Jody for the review. I always know where to go for a solid review brother.

Got this just recently and was afraid that it will be too small, turns out 36mm is such a perfect size. This is my first experience with a Miyota movement and I wish they would have gone for an ETA movement instead. Got into an argument with my wife the other day and I emphasized the point I was trying to make by moving my hand and the only sound in the room after that was the noise of the rotor ... quite awkward, considering my wife was was angry with me about buying another watch.

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but, I went to grammar school not to far from the Smiths factory in Cheltenham Spa. What I noticed that the number of pupils that had new Smiths watches corollated with the parents who worked there. The only other Smiths were genuine W.D. as their fathers were stationed nearby in the many left over R.A.F. bases of the 'cold war'. Myself I was given an automatic Ingersoll which survived on my fathers wrist until the early seventies as I'd been given a non Pogue, Pogue Seiko for my twenty first birthday. What I can remember was the Smiths watches told the time as good as my Ingersoll i.e.they would be on time twice a day the rest of the time 'somewhere near' I am sure that the modern Minot's now fitted would be a lot more accurate and dependable. I would say that if the New Zealander kept Smiths in his pocket and used the Rolex on his wrist would be a wise move!

If there is ever a watch that has done it right in the "Homage" realm it is the Smith's Everest. I had this same watch and at 36mm it totally changed my thoughts on what size of watch is perfect. Good stuff.Bit of trivia .If a vintage smiths has England at 6 o'Clock it was a higher end model made in Cheltenham. If it says UK it was an entry level offering built under contract in Wales and never really intended to be serviced.Smiths deluxe was higher end.Cheers!

Love Eddie's watches and have bought a few straps and one watch from him in the past as well as regularly oggling his divers. He's a bit like Rolex in the sense that his watches generally appreciate - so reasonably priced and made in limited runs has gotta help. Did I see a little raggedness around the cut on the hands though?

Great video as always Jody. You should check out Eddie's Smiths PRS-29A, which is an exact reissue of the Smiths W10 military watch that was issued to the British army in the 60s 70s. More original and truer to history than the Everest. I really regret not buying one a couple of years back.

I was lucky enough to pick up one of these in the last order window. It came about a week ago and I haven't taken it off. Great watch, wears great and have to say quick response from Eddie on emails. Definately recommend taking the plunge, the better half is just about coming round to it as well!

So wonderfully British.....'please, we don't need the publicity'......amazing. They make mouthwatering stuff....Timefactors. The Precista stuff id lovely too....in fact it all is. Classic run from home business I think. They really know what they're doing though.

neilba, I strongly suspect that this is because Jody wanted to review this particular watch; which always sells out in about 10 minutes. If he had wanted to review a less popular model, then he might have had better luck.

The Steinhart Ocean one has the same face as the Rolex Explorer or the Smith Everest. But the Steinhart is in Bronze available. I bought the green ocean one with straps made from canvas. There is also Rubber or Leather available. The motor is a Eta 2824-2 elabore. 1000ft water resistant.

36mm is the most balanced size for a classic three-hand watch. The modern 39mm Explorer is too large. Go to vintage or go to the Smith!

A lovely watch. It would probably be my number one if I decide to buy an Explorer type watch. It is a homage, but for me something sets it apart from the rest. Not sure what that is, but I love it!

    I've had a PRS-25 for 16 months and it's a great watch. However, I have three criticisms.
    1) The screwing in of the crown is a bit gritty.
    2) You cannot use all of the micro-adjustments, as the fake rivets foul against the leading edge of the clasp.
    3) The clasp isn't secure enough.

    • @ivermec-tin666

Dennis, Was that the current version of the bracelet, or the previous iteration?

    • @Swayndo
      @Swayndo 4 роки тому +1

Agreed on the first two points. I did get it to wear on elastic so not a massive issue for me, but you would need to grind the faux rivets down to fit inside the clasp and use some of the micro adjustment. I'm on the Expedition latest release.

I bought the 40mm PRS-25 (I do have an 8" wrist) second hand and am pretty pleased. The bracelet and clasp are well made and the looks are lovely with just a few notable differences from the Rolex it is a homage of. The price is right, and the only homage I like better is the Borealis Adraga, of which I have two. Thank you for the review.

It is a nice affordable everyday watch that you could wear swimming. If the SARB035/033 had a screw down crown I would choose that over the Smiths, but it doesn't.

BTW, I would have preferred if they had used the design of the Smiths that went up Everest. This is an obvious Rolex knock off that doesn't need to be.

I have one coming and have this movement in my Seals Dark Seal 200m. Yes you can hear it, but it is a lot quieter than the rotor on the Omega 300m ceramic/titanium for example, which I love to hear the rotor on, and I was actually disappointed that the Miyota movement was quieter.

I sharpened my teeth to bite Smiths Everest but the opportunity happend and I've bought the military one in black with ETA movt. Great little mothershagger.
You should check on Geckota e01. Also 36 mm and ETA 2824 inside. Well designed, well made british watch. When I think about buying Everest I take a look at Geckota and put it on the wrist and the need goes away. Geckota would be my pick when planning affordable little watch with a bit of Rolex (explorer/OP) DNA. And it is a strap/bracelet monster. Now you can choose among the dial colours and the movements - swiss/japanese, automatic/quartz.

Glad Smiths is getting more exposure! I've just got my hands on a PRS29A, a recreation of the old military issued Smiths W10. Couldn't be happier with it, I think the PRS29A and Everest Expidition watches have great history and am a bit sad only the Rolex homage gets looked at.

This may have already been mentioned, because I'm too lazy to read all 90+ comments. But I just looked, and the 40mm version page says "In Stock" and "Add To Cart". So, that version IS currently available. Unfortunately it's not in the budget for me right now, but someone here probably deserves to get one.
