I honestly feel Jake! I’m Mexican and Puerto Rican and I grew up not speaking Spanish & people in my family did, but I was just never taught. I get so much crap for not speaking Spanish and have had people call me whitewashed lmao it’s so annoying 💀 like it really be ur own people.
fr I am Puerto Rican and most of my cousins speak Spanish and I don’t I hate it I am taking a Spanish class in school and hopefully it helps because I hate when people saying “you are Puerto Rican but don’t speak Spanish that is embarrassing for you”

You have a problem with American Spaniards who can sometimes only speak English. Get over it move out the country to yours. Speaking a language doesn’t define your ethnicity/curltural backgrounds. It’s like going to your friend group who all speak English and call them all fake whatever’s.

About u not knowing how to speak Spanish. I’m originally from South Africa but I grew up in Thailand. I know nothing about SA the language, the culture, like basically Nothing. Haven’t even been back in 12 years. Thailand is my home even tho I’m not a citizen and I know my city very well, grew up w the culture, know the food but I can’t speak Thai. A lot of people have shat on me for not being able to speak Thai even tho I grew up here and it’s my home but idk either 🤷🏼♀️ I always feel bad abt it and wish I tried harder as a child to learn it so ur kinda making me feel lil better about myself😂

nat i really relate to what you were saying about the mexican thing. ive always been proudly mexican, first language was spanish etc and ppl in my school used to be embarrassed about that and like not listen to spanish music or dress “mexican” and all of a sudden it became cool to be mexican and everyone switched up

I’m currently listening to this podcast on my way to school and when nat mentioned how strict her parents were it reminded me of my parents when I had my first boyfriend. I feel like a lot of Hispanic parents don’t realize that their “little girls” are not so little anymore and they are growing up and it’s a hard reality that they have to accept which is why they are the way they are towards us. when we began the dating stage the funny thing is that after months of dating the parents begin to loosen up and become more open and accustomed to what’s actually happening and they end up not even caring what you do anymore
i totally feel what jake is saying , i grew up in a mexican household my family speaks fluent spanish , and the everything with the culture. but since my dad married my mom who is not fluent in spanish either i didn’t grow up with the spanish speaking . and it sucks when people say i’m “white washed “ because of the fact that i can’t speak spanish . when yes i’m not fluent but i put in the effort to learn not to “fit in” but to communicate with family members and endorse my family culture
Everyones definition of authentic Mexican is different. you guys shouldn't focus on the negative. At the end of the day you should be confident and proud of your ROOTS, whatever that means to you. Its your life, everyone is legit just living in it.

I relate so much to younger Nathaly. My mom was so strict with me I couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. Now I’m 21 with two beautiful girls. Also my mom gives my younger siblings more freedom. She understands now why it was important to socialize and have some type of freedom. I feel like my mom was trying to protect me but also she was ruining my young years.
i also grew up not speaking Spanish in a mexican home. it gets hard when i try to speak it to learn and instead of getting help when i mess up a word i get laughed at and get told i'm white. if i tried to embrace my culture i was told i shouldn't since i didn't speak a language. so i understand where jake comes from

I genuinely feel the phases that nathaly went threw, I feel like as me being Hispanic because I was born in the USA, but like grew in a Mexican household like the struggles that I went threw either with money etc.. but seeing where I am now it makes me proud that I am Mexican and got no shame about it! And just genuinely love how nat is so real, but still have me that fun and happy part of yourself. just knowing that u had to be mature enough at a young age it hurts but it also, gives u knowledge that we’ll help u out in your adult life, which it hurts me because of the stuff I want threw and is the reason I am who I am cause I learned a lot which I really could relate too u nat, but lots of love towards u nat 💕 and u as well jake y’all are such a cute couple!!

it's so crazy bc me & my bf literally struggled for 3--6 months in our first year and I thought we were the only ones🥺! We even started dating in 2020! I can relate to this so much! I'm glad that everything's better! When nat got emotional about not being able to experience things I felt that hard! Not that my mom was strict, but we could hardly afford anything! Thank you for sharing your ups and downs!

I relate so much on the strict parent thing because I was never allowed to do anything until I moved out. Dude nat, the strict ass parents & mexican thing too!!! nobody ever understands, especially the one friend i had who would always post all the good side of being mexican & then when they heard about the struggles they’d always be like “oh that’s not such a big deal like just get over it” like ts irks me so bad! I’m so glad you’re talking about it.
I can relate to so much about when jake brought up the topic of not being able to speak spanish, but you grew up in that culture. I am mixed and both hispanic and puerto rican, I grew up where I learned some Spanish, but not a lot, and I have been told that I may look like I'm hispanic, but i'll never be considered one to certain people because I am not fluent in speaking Spanish, and that I'm white washed n all that, BUT like sometimes I would let it get to me or something because even though I don't speak or hell even "act" like it, I constantly try to connect with my culture and it sucks when people say you'll never be like everyone else who's hispanic, Mexican, or even puerto rican
So glad I’m not the only one who does this lol 😂 before I got with my husband I did the same. Checked all his stuff and what he was liking. But if they truly love you they’ll change.

Jacob is as Hispanic as any other person who’s raised in a Hispanic household regardless if he didn’t struggle with non English speaking parents. His roots are 100% Hispanic.
I feel you jake on a certain level, I’m Mexican I was born in Mexico but raised in Canada im grateful to be able to understand and speak Spanish but the thing I struggle with is just the fact that I was raised in a different country makes relatives see me differently, the way my cousins sometimes look at me because I can’t pronounce some words properly etc makes me kinda mad cause I don’t give them a judgemental look when they try to say something in English like it really be your own people/family judging you & the fact I never struggled the way my parents did when they lived in Mexico makes my relatives look at me 100x worse but like it’s not my fault. At the end of the day I’m Mexican it’s in my blood, just because my Spanish is bad & I didn’t have the same struggles as others doesn’t make me any less Mexican but some people don’t get that.
Jake I think doing these podcasts will help you a lot with trying to get your words out! I can see when u get nervous and struggle but thats okay! It will get better. I’m the same way so I can totally relate to you!!

Wait a damn minute nathaly literally is so amazing I’ve been watching her since like 4 years ago and she got me through middle school highschool. I’m still stuck on how anyone could see nat as “mean” she’s literally so creative and smart and such a badass like I don’t understand. NATS videos have always helped me and they’re almost therapeutic almost because she’s just so honestly her it makes you feel like you can be yourself too ❤️

Nat! I feel you.. I grew up with a strict military dad and I feel you 100% I left my parents house due to how strict he was and controlling and I was the one who had to deal with it the most! Like they were the hardest on me and I even stopped talking to them for two-three years. Because of how bad it was and I know sometimes they change for the other siblings and it made me so happy they changed for my other siblings but it still hurt that I had to be hurt for them to change for them and now I talk to them again but it is hard and I’m sorry you had to go through that!

i felt jake on the spanish speaking section. i grew up in a doninican household.. and my dad o my knee a little bit of english, but when i started to grow older, my parents didn’t teach me spanish because my dad knew English already. I always feel less than other Hispanics just because I don’t speak Spanish, but I love my culture.
