  • In the face of rising living costs due to increasing power and fuel prices, low-income families in Bangladesh are finding it difficult to make ends meet. However, a low-cost cooking solution is providing much-needed relief, such as for Suraiya Akter, a housewife living in the Basilla area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The solar cooking system utilises both solar power and the power grid, allowing Suraiya to significantly reduce her family's cooking fuel costs, making it easier to manage expenses. Now, she can cook food for her six-member family at a monthly cost of only Tk500-Tk600 while previously the family would need around four maunds of firewood every month for cooking, which costs around Tk1,500.
The Solar Cooking project has been successfully implemented by United International University (UIU) and is jointly funded by the UK's Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) and Germany's Energising Development (EnDev) of GIZ. The system has many benefits, as Suraiya mentioned: "I do not need to sit in the kitchen all the time. I can do other chores while cooking." This renewable energy solution is also environmentally friendly and hassle-free.
Dr M Rezwan Khan, the innovator and designer of the facility, stated that the solar system can be used even in low sunlight as it also has a connection with the grid. He also noted that the system costs around Tk20,000 to Tk22,000, which covers eight solar photovoltaic panels with a 400 watt capacity, as well as other necessary accessories. The system lasts for at least 8 to 10 years and three years are enough to get the investment recovery. The only limitation is that it cannot generate electricity at night due to a lack of sunlight, but it can be tied with the grid line to address this shortcoming.
During a visit to some locations where the solar cooking system is being used in Basilla, Energy Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said that this innovation holds promise towards reducing the dependence on costly and volatile LPG and firewood for cooking. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury instructed the formation of a committee to explore ways of commercialising the solar cooking system across the country. Munira Sultana, Chairman of Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (Sreda), pledged to provide all possible support to commercialise such an innovative solution.
