Can I use something else other than a cotton ball??? Like a ball made out of aluminium foil or smth lime that

You can use something else, we just chose cotton balls since they are relatively safe for launching. Be careful if you pick a harder or heavier object!

How short does the short pencil need to be?

The exact length is not critical, you need to make sure it is long enough for the rubber band to fit over both ends without slipping off.
