The right aircraft choice for an aerobatic team. I saw the Fiat G-91 R3 and R4 in flight many times when she served in the Portuguese Air Force - 1965 to 1993 - and the aircraft was amazingly agile and powerful enough. Being a pilot myself I met several people who flew the G-91. They all liked the plane, one said that the aircraft was quite unstable and had to be attentively surveilled during the whole flight. Another pilot I knew flew a lot of hours in the G-91 and ended up killing himself in a Cessna 150. Portugal used the G-91 in combat, the only country to do so. The aircraft gave a good account of herself but her payload was a bit too light. It was the best we had, though, and still we lost at least three in combat to anti-aircraft fire and SAM-7s, and several others to other causes. Fortunately the FIAT had a very capable Martin Baker ejection seat. I miss that aircraft and the A-7P a lot, just as I miss our Aerobatic Team _Asas de Portugal_ who operated six beautifully decorated Cessna T-37C between 1976 and 1992. 🙁
No one else used the FIAT G-91 longer than the Portuguese Air Force, (1965 to 1993) who was the only one to fly combat Operations with her. The aircraft was indeed extremely agile, very small, had an outstanding roll rate and emitted no smoke; but didn't have radar nor an adequate sight for air to air combat. In Portuguese Guinea Bissau, the threat of suddenly having Migs-17 operating from Guinea Conacri attacking our FIATs was taken seriously. We even installed experimentally AIM-9B Sidewinders, one in either outer pylon of our G-91s - I saw at least one picture - but in the end the Air threat never materialised. Still, we lost at least three G-91s to enemy fire in Guinea Bissau alone, both to ZPU-4 AA systems and SAM-7s. Personally, I think the G-91 would have had no chance against a well flown Mig-17 flown by some East German or Cuban "volunteer"; and unlike the Americans in Vietnam with their powerful F-4s or F-105s the FIAT had not enough power, therefore no option to avoid the fight or break contact in case of need. It was indeed an exciting and elegant little combat aircraft and I miss her a lot, just as I miss the thundering A-7P Corsair. Two very different yet fascinating aircraft that I won't see again crossing the Portuguese skies... 🙁
Fantastici.
I really enjoyed the video, but the background music is horrible. 😬 On top of that, the FIAT has a beautiful, whistling noise that I'd rather like to hear again!
@@cabre4 certo!
I used to think the Fiat was a modified Sabre. I didn't know how small it was until I got a model of one and compared it to my F-86D. I now know it was an indigenous design (and a pretty neat one at that), but still looks like an F-86 Sabre and an F-8 Crusader had a love child. Are there any civilian owned examples out on the airshow circuit?
I don't think so. The G91 had a relatively poor diffusion, both for the (used) F86 competition, and for the developing of aviation technology, that made that plane obsolete as a fighter (but still valid as a ground attacker). In addition to, in Italy, the the culture of historic aircraft is NOT developed at all.
Gufo_Tave That is a shame. You get a little more out of seeing something in motion as a living breathing machine than something just static in a museum. There were quite a few Italian designs during WWII that were quite interesting. The trimotor arrangement seemed quite popular in Italy. The C.D.R.A Z.1007bis was very striking. Also the Macchi Falgore. I'm sure as the value of these planes continues to climb someone will get the itch to find one and put an Italian Warbird in the air somewhere. There's even a Sturmovic flying now! All these planes deserve to be represented.
jpatt1000 as for ww2 birds check Fiat g-50 and g-55. They came out very late but many deemed the g-55 to be the best fighter of the war. Italian design (same as g-50) and German engine.
Not that I'm aware, no. But the Portuguese _Museu do Ar_ in Sintra AFB has at least two in static display, a R3 and a R4. The FIAT is indeed small, but keep in mind that the F-86D was larger than any other Sabre version. Probably you own the model from Airfix, just like me... 😀
“I never Die!” ..

Wonderful little aircraft,wonderful precision flying!👏
Non merita questa musica questo fantastico video!!
Altri tempi altri piloti, altra mentalità. Comunque... Favolosi!

Li vidi da vicino. Da bambino.
I always liked the Gina. Great looking airplane !
They did give sterling performance for three decades with the Italian & German Air Forces and would out turn any MIG down low if attacked !!!
Due to it's lightweight, it was well suited to German methodology of aerial reconnaissance.

such a small but beautiful aircraft!
this jet is love of my life

Fiat 91 was great ground attack jet😊
Bravissimi ! ❤
G-91 ❤️❤️❤️

Amazing Frecce Tricololoi before the RAMSTEIN!

congrats, nice music!!! please tell me who is playing the last song title, it`s simply wonderful....
+Bernd Birkholz ...Paolo Conte singer ...the song is Max...

A fighter bomber ground attack combat aircraft made by FIAT. Nough said!
badass
Grande Gallus !!!
