Finally I understand this block! Thanks a lot, sir! You are my main instructor, actually! Without you, I wouldn't stand a chance!

E, III, 304: "3. Keep the body half facing the target at the moment of the block." Indeed, but is the circular block one single block or two consecutive-by-default blocks? Are they both side blocks or the first one is an inward low front block, pretty much like the first movement in Eui-Am teul, only with inner forearm instead of knife-hand as the blocking tool? If it were a side block, then the reaction hand would go back to the hip, and it clearly does not. Therefore I always thought of it as a front block and, by definition, this means full-facing.

I agree that the first part is not a side block. It is a scooping action (not scooping block). It is debateable whether it is full facing or half facing. I am in favour of the argument of it being slightly half facing for two main reasons. One is that it is easier to get under the attacking limb and the other is that it puts you in a better position to get power in the final block. Turning away as you block will not allow you to throw mass behind the technique. Although there are some techniques in patterns that do this. E.g. movements 25 & 29 in Kwan Gae Tul.

Thank you for the insightful video sir. Would you say that the hand when the block is completed, finishes is outside the shoulder line? If so, why?

Interesting question. It is a tricky question to answer without diagrams or video. Maybe I will show my answer in my next vlog. The final position on circular blocks is no different to that of a side block where you are half facing when you compare the blocking tool in relation to the upper body. It's just that the stance is 45 degrees different which gives the effect that you are blocking 45 degrees outside the shoulder line.

Grand Master, can you clarify - what angle should the second block (the inner forearm, middle block) finish at? I've recently been told that this should be parallel to the rear foot (25 degrees) and that this was mentioned at the IIC-120 (Manchester). Would appreciate your guidance. Thank you.

Thank you for your question. I should have mentioned this in the video. But you are right, 25 degrees is a good guide and it should be done that way when performing a circular block as a fundamental exercise or in patterns. Of course, in a real situation there is a degree of variability and it can be slightly more or less than this angle depending on the exact position of the opponent.
