  • This is one of my most treasured Soundtrack moments from the movie, Rob Roy. I can't tell you how much this song has haunted me down the years. I can hear it a million times and still cry as if it's my first.
The song is a traditional Scottish lament that dates back to 1788 and tells the tale of a sailor, Ailein Moireasdan ( or 'Alan" in English ) who was a sea captain sailing from Stornoway to Scalpay to marry his love, Annag ( or Annie in English ). Unfortunately, he sails right into a storm and perishes with his ship. Poor Annag composes this song for her lost love but never recovers from her grief and tragically drowns herself in the ocean.

    How Far I'll Go
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, originally performed by Auli'i Cravalho
    From the Disney movie Moana
    Original Song: • Auli'i Cravalho - How ...
    - | LYRICS |-
    (English Translation)
    How sorrowful I am
When I rise early in the morning
Ò hì, I would go with you
Hì ri bhò hò ru bhì
Hì ri bhò hò rinn o ho
Brown-haired Alan, ò hì, I would go with you
If the sand be your pillow
If the seaweed be your bed
If the fish are your candles bright
If the seals are your watchmen
I would drink, though all would abhor
Of your heart's blood after you were drowned
Original Song : • Rob Roy - Ailein Duinn...

I went to a Capercaillie concert one night, and the female vocalist sang this for me....(Because i was yelling in between songs for it) Now i would say this to you again Karliene....only you could upstage that performance. You see that strange little impediment/accent in your voice that conveys a human being is singing. Its particularly evident in the Skye boat song......never lose that in the name of perfection....X

This months, two Lithuanian pilots disappeared in the Baltic sea. I somehow feel as if this song could be a ballad for them. As if they would know their families are waiting for them to come back. Thank you Karliene, for putting feelings you cannot explain with words into your songs...You truly are a miracle :)

It is a song about the loss of a loved one, so I can understand why you could relate it to this.
I believe a women (forgot her name) wrote this after her fiancé drowned after the fishing boat he was on sank due to a storm. She then took her own life by jumping into the sea due to her depression.
I can't say that the story is true, but it's what my nan told me the song was about as I grew up with her singing these songs to me.

@@ruth540 You are correct! Her fiance was sailing to go marry her, but his crew came across a storm and they all drowned. She composed this song as a lament before throwing herself into the sea a few months after and her body was found ashore alongside her fiance's body.

Such is the sea. She gives and she takes, unfeeling and uncaring. And yet many's the lad who's heard the song of wind and wave, and gone to sea. For those who hear the song, the call of the open water goes on unceasing.
To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
Even in the peril, there is alluring beauty, even as there is beauty in a song that laments the death of a sailor.

Beautiful song! I love the Irish Gaelic laments. I wonder though, basic grammar question I'm sure, why the 'bh' in 'bhì' is pronounced here during the refrain, but in a lot of Irish Gaelic words, it's silent, such as the verb 'bhfuil' is pronounced without the 'bh'. This is a legit question, especially because I find all aspects of the Irish/Scots/Welsh language to be beautiful, and I seek to expand my understanding of such treasures.

Everyone: omg your voice is beautiful!!! This is really touching thank you so much!
Me *whilst frantically liking all comments saying that because I wholeheartedly agree* (please imagine this said in a more than slightly dramatic way) : yes but the translation, the translation! Where is the translation!

Sometimes dear soul, we do not need translation, but just need to feel the words as they wrap themselves around us. Spiriting us away to a time long, long gone, it is not for us to see but to feel .... enjoy the beauty sit back with your eyes closed and dream.
