the water damage sample story perfectly explains the magic of Premo and Gu.
No plugins!!
Man, Premo can make even water damage to a vinyl record sound dope
XD
This might be the dopest story of any episode thus far! So dope!
@@aharris82 the static beat on Jeru’s first album is GOAT!
I honestly thought that’s how he made it like just straight like that
This came out when there were B-Sides and a lot of times it was actually better than the A-Side. 🔥🔥🔥
Fax miss da cassette days
Yes sir
I remember when Premier himself played this song on his old radio show back in 94 called "The Thunderstorm" on WBLS. Classic.
That's how I first heard that joint too was on Thunderstorm. Real headz know about that show!
WOW....I never even noticed the static. But only Premier can makes fucking static sound dope on a track. Peace to Jeru.
Honestly, I always thought the static was deliberate.
I didn't too. It adds some féerie to this gem.
Now the static sticks out. Still dope.
And I could rock a rhyme with just STATIK 🎤
😎
This beat is a beat juggler’s dream. Perfectly placed drums and stabs
Yes indeed!
fr tho! this and "2 Thousand" by Group Home 🔥
This jawn is an absolute head bop. You just can’t help but bopping ya head.
Salute Premier
Rip Guru
Salute the floppy disk
Gang Starr forever ♾
One of dopest GANG STARR track ever!!!
Still wanting on Paula Perry - Extra,Extra
Wow! that is a great selection B. Co-sign!!! Queen of Ft Greene
Primo’s style is so dirty he’ll throw mildew on the track. Crazy dope. Love that beat. Mad props to the Iconic duo known as Gangstarr.
RIP GURU.✊🔥
As always, respect the Floppy Y’all. Peace.💾🔥🎤🔥💾🔥🎤🔥💾🔥🎤
Little known fact Gang Starr is originally from Boston Edo G was a part of the group and gang Starr foundation. Guru and big shug moved to NY and Premier later on moved and that’s how Gang Starr was born
*PREEMO 🙏🏽 word to Guru!
@@josemendez-fd5qz DJ Premier is from Texas.
@@kingenoname1495 did I say DJ Premier no I said Gang Starr. You don’t believe me look it up. In the Ed OG and the Bulldogs documentary. Edo was a part of Gang Starr foundation
The Question Mark Remains.
A true artist sees beauty in everything, even what's damaged.
Shout out to all the moms holding down our record collection
This is actually my all time favorite Gang Starr track. It’s just perfect in every way. And Guru just spits line after line of quotables.
"? Remains" is top 3 Gangstarr for me. The grime and the loop is straight up what we all fell in love with back in the 90s. Still waiting on Soliloquy of Chaos Premier......☺️
Any time I ever see a video, interview etc of Preemo I always have one prominent thought in my mind: he is a testament to his parents and family. The way he carries himself, the way he gives props to absolutely anyone that had any involvement, his sheer passion for his craft. Such an amazing human being and I wish I could thank him in person for everything he has given us.
I thought that Premo added that static sound after recording the sample. There is so much goodness in these videos! Thank you so much. Incredibly dope🔥🔥🔥
Needed this. Moms in the hospital. Hip hop brings my healing
Hope your mom is doing ok!✊🏾
Blessings to you and yours
Never thought the most addicting part of the beat was water damage lol damn
if you know the sample for this then you know how crazy it is that Primo flipped such a light and breezy record into something super street and raw. Salute
ill just say a certain bk rapper from the 80s used the full loop in it's original smoothness. I'm Surprised the publishers can't hear it.
Thank god this came off like this...so effin dope. Klassik. One of my favorite HipHop tracks of all time. When I heard that on Tony touch mixtape...I just stayed rewinding...damn
One of my favorite Gangstarr tracks. A overlooked gem.
preem is a genius for flipping a distorted record, loved the story.
Can't believe he pulled this one out the bag!!! One of the most under-appreciated Hip Hop tracks of all time. This made my day, thank you Preemo 🙏🙏🙏
Gang Starr is so fucking underrated. They don't get the respect they deserve. RIP Guru
Damn, this story behind that beat just blew my mind. I can't wait for the next one.
Fat Joe is in every music video from the 90s LOLLLL
As impossible as it is for me to even pick my top 3 favorite Gang Starr songs, because there are so many, this song has to be in that top 3. The beat, the lyrics, the subject matter, everything about this song screams pure hip hop. Still pumpin this jam 'til this day.
First heard this in '94 cuz my big bro has the vinyl to this. ❤️it til this day. Underrated treat from Gang Starr. ❤️❤️
I never knew the static was from an accident! That is legendary. I’ve listened to that track (and a bunch of other DJ premier and Guru) so this is so dope to hear. Please keep it coming!
It's funny, I bought this single when it 1st game out. After all of these years, I never noticed the flaw with the static Primo revealed. It's a testament to his creativity and greatness.
Thank God that The Legend DJ Premier came to NYC from Texas to bless us!!!!💪💪💪💪💪
One of my favorite Primo beats. Nice to hear this story.
Preem thanks for taking the time for telling us of all the memories you have.
I just assumed the staticy noise was put there intentionally, that’s insane that it was water damage. Preemo turned an imperfection into perfection
This track is on the Full Clip 2 disc set
“There’s no need to worry!!!” Damn, love this joint.
That description of the records getting damaged made my toes curl. That’s something a lot of us can relate to, and it really hurts if it happens.
Can't wait to know everything about the genesis of this track!
This was actually on a soundtrack and was a B-side. The single for "The Loot" I believe. It was literally FOREVER ago. RIP Guru. My favorite hip-hop group. Facts.
"There's gonna be a lot of these" - Preemo ..... Music to my ears. Keep 'em coming big fella
cant explain how immediately this phrase excited me
This « water damage » story is amazing 😂😂 Damn, I LOVE the history (or better yet behind the scenes or making of) of hip-hop classic tracks 👍🏾 These ‘Preemo’ stories should be captured at the Smithsonians or at the Hip-Hop Music Museum in NYC🔥🔥🔥
The definition of making lemonade out of lemons. The water damage really gave it an even more dustier, classic hip hop sound.
Man this is still 🔥🔥🔥🔥 my cassette popped I played this so much
The synchronicity and elements of the road trip to the perseverance of your intuition is an unmatched hallmark to your production! Thank you for droppin' the science on this one!
I never forget being a little kid at the arcade and the bigger kids would come in with their boom boxes blasting the latest mixtape, and the first time i heard this gem, the DJ was beat-juggling the "as the world revolves, wack crews lick my balls" line back and forth lol. It sounded amazing. Also, I remember a few months later being at the supermarket with mom dukes and the radio was playing the original song this track samples lol. It was one of my first sample-catching moments. Great memories from such a great track. Salute Primo !
Preem, we want to see you playing with the drum pad. Show us how you took the sounds saved on the floppy disk onto the sampling machine. We want to see the master at work, even if its 30 years later
That would be doooooope
A lot of these samples weren't cleared at the time, and UA-cam's copyright filters would pick up on the raw sounds from the original records a lot easier I think - it could lead to some legal problems in the long run, either on or off UA-cam. Also, real old school deejays and producers don't sample snitch, or give away what records they're using. That's the true old school mentality. Ashtrays over the record labels while they're spinning and all that, so competitors can't peep their breaks etc.
@@marlondaniels7912 I dont think youtube would catch sample chops, also its 2022 and we all know which samples were used.. I also vote for we want to see the mpc and the legend breaking it down!
nah suckas copy too much
@@djscottydoo it would
“S is always around, but Z’s are too” 😆🍻🤜
RIP gifted unlimited Rhymes universal. Nice, unexpected choice.
The water damage is the best part of the song. Guru flies through this with a perfect operational record. Now I know why that notice is on the song. Incredible. Dj Premier is a hip hop production GOD!!!!!!!
This is one of my favourite Gang Starr tracks ever!! That beat is just unbelievable!!!
Ehh 1 of his most simple sounding beats , its dope but far from his best beats
My life motto is, "rap is something you do, hip hop is something you live", a quote from The Teacha. And Preemo embodies that of the fullest. Truly an inspiration. Love this series!!
Salute to the 💾 Tuesday!
No doubt! All joints ain't cleared! No snitching on yourself!
Man! Never noticed the static with the sample! Definitely worked! Dope story as usual! Salute Gang Starr! RIP GURU.

Can't wait to hear another story about this amazing song!! Premoo and Guru one of the best yet!! GangStarr forever GangStarr for life!!
This was always in top 5 Gang Starr joints for me, but hearing the road trip / water damage story just inched it up a few notches. Much respect!
Thank you- with all the negativity currently out there, I just listened to this epic story and got an attitude adjustment. Thank You DJ Premier for your music and creativity!
I grew up in toronto. Was 17-18 in 94. I was lucky enough to have DJ friends buying that underground ground from NY... this track. OH MY GOD!
Thanks Preemo
Man I’m so curious to the story behind ‘doe in advance’. It was a record I obsessed over back then, I had it on a tape and couldn’t find it anywhere. Finally someone told me it was a Japan only bonus track on Hard to Earn, but when I finally tracked that down, it was a weird remix. I eventually found a good copy on a 12”, which I presume is an unofficial release. I still love that joint. Maybe I made this up, but since ‘doe in advance’ and ‘suckers need bodyguards’ start with the same static sound, I thought it didn’t get cleared and suckers was put on that spot on the album instead.
Sample clearance is why there are 2 versions of "Doe in Advance" . The faster tempo one is the original if I recall correctly and the "remix" is the slowed down beat
Another Classic So Wassup episode I live for these. I’m bumping the full clip album right now that features Tha ? Remainz. This joint is straight up genius I would like to hear the other version Preemo did. Gang Starr 4 Eva Salute
This is why he’s my favourite Hip Hop producer ever!
I never even noticed the water damage spot till now wow. One of my favorites. I definitely miss the b sides. Rip Guru 👑 LongLiveGangstarr. Big ups Premo!
This video explains why I still to this day use physical gear and hard drives vs a daw with unlimited time and resources. I came from an era in the 80s when my first sampler was the sk-1. I learned to get a lot out of that little thing. It’s about being creative not about having the latest and greatest computer or plugins. I still use floppies and master to DAT.
me too except i master in a daw
I was at the London Forum show age 12, it was Oct 4th 1994 (I had the AAA sticker on my fridge after)... changed my entire life. A neighbour was a journalist and she took me to soundcheck where I watched Preemo setting up 😮 & then Jeru, Afu, Shug appeared... then Pete Rock and CL appeared 🤯. That night 2 records were announced as coming out the following day: Main Ingredient album by Pete & CL AND.... Question Remainz by Gang Starr. Luckily I lived opposite a record store and copped both immediately (age 12).
Salute preemo, your influence saved me from a lot of madness & gave me a path that became my career. Guru was also one of the coolest people I had the fortune to meet a bunch of times. Emotional memories tbh. Gang Starr forever

These are my favorite clips on the whole internet nowadays, but when are we getting some Jay-Z stories?
They blocking the video right away if it has Jay song in it. I'm afraid we're not getting Hov 😕
@@tnb6359 yeah, that is my guess too. Still, I feel like Jay should green light his song when it’s Preemo 🔥🔥
there's no reason to give any more attention to jay-z than he already gets. beyonce bought him a fuckin bugatti chiron, for fucks sake.
@@jdbankshot how is that relevant in this context? We wanna hear Preemo talk about how he made timeless classics with Jay. Nobody here cares about who bought who a million dollar car 🤷🏽♂️
He'd probably have to get special permission from Jay considering a lot of Jay-Z videos get blocked for copyright in a heartbeat.
Another Classic Boom Bap Gang Starr Hip Hop Song Gang Starr Forever RIP GURU💎🙏🏾🙏🏾
My favorite song here R.I.P GURU
Let’s go! One of my favorites 🦾🦾🦾
Genius, not much else can be said about a classic like this
“Only people that know what it is, know what time it is!” 😂😂😂😂
Thats why Preem's the GOAT! Peace and love!
I still have this on cassette!
Recreating classic beats actually teaches you the techniques used by trial and error, so flowers to the OG's who influenced generations!
In fact I produce tracks soley using Audacity, using the techniques of the masters.
might be the most fascinating one yet Preemo. keeping the static in is what makes it. respect
Yes! One of my favorite Preemo beats! Finally! Good story and lesson! Do "Suspended In Time" real soon!
Everybody here knows what time it is.
Man Got Me All Nostalgic... LOVE you Preem
RIP GURU 🙏 DJ Premier for president!
Preemo saving the HOLY GRAIL of his classics for last like "NY state of mind", "D'Evils", "Nas is like", "22 2's" etc
Preem didn't produce 22 2's, that was Ski who did the beat for "Dead Presidents"
@@dannydamnmendez you're right, I was thinking "friend or foe" 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@ChicagoStyles23 Friend or Foe would be dope to do an episode on. I also REEEEALLY wanna see A Million and One Questions, all three versions including the album cut with Rhyme No More which is still one of my all time favorite Premier beats. That Grover Washington flip is like an eargasm
One of my all time fave Gangstarr joints💯
So dope Preem. Such timeless tracks and these episodes make them even more so. BLESS UP
One of my Favorite songs of all time
I LOVE THIS TRACK...BTW the sample is Bob James.lol
Gang Starr 4 Life! RIP Guru!
I NEED some more! #SoWassup
Living legend in the flesh! Thank you Preemo!!!!!
Gang star is so under rated, definately in my top 10, been a fan since the early 90s
I love watching these every week, only show I watch religiously. Thanks Preem
Damn man time machine status. Listened to this in Walkman catching bus to school from the Eastside of Long Beach to school in Lakewood.
Only Primo can turn water damaged sounds into instruments 😂🔥🔥✊🏾✊🏾
Prem is da man. Real OG and legendary authentic person. Went to so many of his concerts in switzerland. Salute!
Dont ever stop this series!
My favorite day of the week!!! PLEASE keep these goin forever!!!!
I had a little Nissan 720 pickup same color back in the day seeing that picture brings back so many pictures brother.
i was just playing this song!
What a classic! that water damage sound helped to defy the rugged and intelligent sound of Hard 2 Earn!
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DWYCK EP!!!!!
a new "so wassup?" episode is always my highlight of the week
This is one of my favorite beats of all time
One of the greatest Primo productions of all time!
I remember when I first heard Gangstarr...My little brother was playing it on his phone earlier too...he has learned well.
This is my favorite Gang Starr joint..great story!!
Exactly this song made me fell in love with the hip-hop. Heard it on the radio in Russia (may sound weird, but i had ir tape recorded as an evidence) on the warm summer day after the rain in 1999.
