- Understanding blockchain and cryptocurrency in a historical context. Douglas J. Pepe is a partner in New York litigation boutique Joseph Hage Aaronson. By day, he represents hedge funds, financial institutions, corporations and large law firms in complex commercial disputes. On nights and weekends, he pursues his newfound passion in blockchain and crypto. He and a friend have been building a growing cryptocurrency mining operation and designing crypto-related algorithmic trading strategies. Doug’s two worlds are beginning to merge, as he has recently begun giving legal advice on cryptocurrency regulatory issues in his day job. When bitcoin currency is converted from currency into cash, that interface has to remain under some regulatory safeguards. I think the fact that within the bitcoin universe an algorithm replaces the function of the goverment …[that] is actually pretty cool.”
It is not a speculative investment even though it is being used as such by other people. As Bitcoin network grows the value of Bitcoin grows. As people move into Bitcoin for payments and receipts they stop using US Dollars, Euros and Chinese Yuan which in the long-term devalues these currencies.
Bitcoin is the beginning of something great: a currency without a government, something necessary and imperative. But I am not familiar with the specific product to assert whether it is the best potential setup. And we need a long time to establish confidence.
At its core, bitcoin is a smart currency, designed by very forward-thinking engineers. It eliminates the need for banks, gets rid of credit card fees, currency exchange fees, money transfer fees, and reduces the need for lawyers in transitions… all good things.”

you didnt really go into why we do not need to trust worry about trust with blockchain/ crypto, maybe i missed it?
it was kind of left out. there are 2 main aspects that make it trust-free: the proof of work mining and the ability for anyone to run and verify the blockchain ledger themselves.

Fair point. The ETH white paper describes smart contracts as “a piece of code implementing arbitrary rules” but I could have gone further to talk about DAaps. This was really a non-technical talk. I was trying to explain the concepts to non-users who are totally unfamiliar with blockchain. Thanks for the comment.

But he did not explain anything, including: (a) why isn't bitcoin subject to major manipulation by just one or two traders (it is! in fact, just one trader inflated its value to $30,000); and (b) why is it trustless? don't you have to trust banks like Mt. Gox to hold your bitcoin? - again, yes, and 850k went missing in 2014; (c) what security is there that the blockchain evidencing your holdings can't be destroyed or deleted? and (d) how can you trust a currency whose inventor refuses to identify himself?
