Mother Freedom Cover

- Released as a single in 1971, this week’s “Remake of a Classic” made it onto Bread’s 1972 album, “Baby I’m-a Want You.” Although the album spawned several hit singles (“Baby I’m-a Want You”, “Everything I Own”, and “Diary”), “Mother Freedom” failed to enjoy the same success on the charts; topping out at No. 37 on the Billboard Top 100. While most Bread songs were wistful love songs, “Mother Freedom” fell squarely into the rock genre; perhaps die-hard Bread fans found it a little too heavy.
This was a fun tune to do. I did give it a little more umph compared to the original, but I think it still retains its classic feel.
I had Mother Freedom on 8 track titled, Bread at their Best. To me, it was Bread's best song. I still play it over and over.
Thanks for listening in!

This is unreal 😅sooo good❤
You NEVER hear Bread anywhere now. They're like a forgotten band that nobody knows, and from the comments, I can see most people who WERE familiar with them didn't even know this song, which I venture to say was the only one of their songs that was a rocker. Nicely done.
Thanks so much...I appreciate it! Yeah, this falls into the, "THIS is BREAD?" category.
I remember it so well it was a rocker in its day and has stood the test of time great classic band
They did one other Rocker - "Fancy Dancer" - Check it out!!! :D
Why isn’t there millions of likes on this song , I think all the old rockers are now under a rock
Ok, now THAT's funny! Thanks, Mike...I appreciate it!
Freedom, keep walkin'
Keep on your toesand don't stop talkin' 'bout
Freedom, get goin'
Lots to be learned and lots to be knowin' 'bout
People, gotta reach 'em
Sit 'em right down and then you gotta teach 'em 'bout
Freedom, gotta win it
Gotta put yourself smack dab in it
Hey tomorrow
Now don't you go away
Cause freedom
Just might come your way
Freedom, keep tryin'
People stay alive and people keep dyin' for
Freedom, so don't lose it
Ya gotta understand ya just can't abuse it
Freedom, get movin'
Never gonna stop till everybody's groovin' on
Love for, one another
Callin' some friend and callin' some brother
Hey tomorrow
You're not so far away
Mother freedom
We'll know you well someday
Sweet!
Wow..wow, my favorite. Rock on, Russ!! Love it.. great Talent!! Karen, NC, USA
Appreciate it, Karen...thanks!
This is great work. I'm 65 and back in the day of being a cool rocker in a band, Bread was zero cred.
Jump to last week at our band rehearsal and the lead guitarist 'came out' as a fan of 'make it with you'. So I wanted to send them a copy of 'mother freedom' and I found yours. Really helpful showing the parts as well. Great job and a better solo than the original, I'd say.....now let's see what else you've done since then.thank you.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Back in my metal days I probably would have been beaten up for liking Bread...the thing is the other metal heads probably liked them too!
First complete song I taught a friend when I sold him my guitar - I was giving up learning to play but when we played it together I decided to get a better guitar instead... almost 40 years later we are still in a band together. Never gigged Mother Freedom but seeing this great cover makes me want to add it to the set.
One of my all time favorite Bread tunes. Proof they could rock-n-roll with the best of them! Great rendition, Russ!!!
Mine too! Thanks!
Nice cover Russ! That is solid. Some serious talent there, and the message is clear as ever. Mother Freedom!
I really appreciate that, Adam...thanks so much!
Back again and needed this boost! Thanks!
Mr. Willoughby, I am just amazed! I love your incredible cover of Mother Freedom. I have watched it so many times that I have lost count! Great job!
Best full on cover by one guy I have ever seen.
wow amazing ...claps..claps..claps......
Thank you so much 😀
Very nice! I listened to this song hundreds of times back in the 70s when it came out. I always thought I was the only one who liked it! I still have the 45 rpm record with this song being the B side of their hit song 'If'. Keep 'em coming, Russ!!
My brother had the 45, that's how I was introduced to it. It really is a cool tune. Thanks so much for listening in!
My brother had the eight track n we wore out these songs
Speechless with happy memories and pure enjoyment of this
Awesome cover band you've got there Russ! Rock on man!!!
Thanks a bunch!
Nice job !!! I even liked your change up on it . As always the pleasure was all mine ...🍻
As always, many thanks! I really appreciate it!
Enjoyed this very much 😃Russ!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Wow!!! Amazing ….

Glad to hear, thanks!
*YES!!!!!* You NAILED THIS!!!!
Thanks a million!
Nice job mister!! Love all of it!!
Thanks a bunch!
Brilliant...!
Thanks!
Great performance!
Many thanks!
Amazing spot on cover of my favorite Bread song that hardly anyone knows! LOL This was David Gates returning to his early songwriting roots when he wrote The Monkees most rock sounding song “Saturday’s Child” back in 1966 which opens with a great guitar riff . . . which I think was played by Louie Shelton (who also played lead guitar on Last Train to Clarksville & Valerie). Mother Freedom has some great lead guitar playing by James Griffin!
You amaze me Russ with your ability to play and sing every part so perfectly like Paul McCartney did on his Ram album.
Wow, thanks so much! BTW, "Saturday's Child" is one of my favorite Monkees tunes. And yes, I think it was Shelton. When I did my video of "Clarksville" I watched his youtube video of how he played it....good stuff!
@@russwilloughby501 Just watched your “Last Train To Clarksville” cover and of course you did a great job as usual and you really nailed both of Louie Shelton’s guitar parts! It’s really funny because I also learned how to play it by watching his video. I have to admit it took me awhile to get the guitar parts down. I am going to go through and check out all of your other great covers.
@@Frankmpa1 Thanks! Shelton is really one of those unsung monsters of guitar.
Well done cobber!! Dig it.
Thanks, Andy!
Compliments maestro!
Thank you!
Man! Awesome guitar riffs!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much!
Very well done! Always thought this was a great rocker that was overlooked. Nice job!
Thanks for listening...I appreciate it!
wow, absolutely fantastic !
Glad you think so...thanks so much!
@@russwilloughby501 pls make more cover, I hope u can cover some of the journey songs too😍
you are the guy I was always looking for to join all my 70s cover bands
thanks again for sharing
One of the bands I'm in does mostly late 60s early 70s stuff. Great fun! Thanks so much for listening in!
seriously great
Thanks; I appreciate it!
Eres una estrella de Rock ♦
Thank you!
Damn you Geezers ROCK!!! I'm the ripe young age of 60 myself, still a young wippersnapper!!! ;}
Thanks so much!
@@russwilloughby501 Respect Given where Respect is Due! You are welcome! :)
Wow, now that's the way to cover a song!!!!!!!! Love the video too. Old Russ got some pipes too. Guessing you play keys too. Great job!!! Peace
I love this so much! Flashback to Jr high. Love Bread.
Glad to hear it...many thanks!
Great cover. Always loved this song. Nice work.
you my friend are amazing.. another one of my favs
So cool and well done! Good job Russ. BTW, whose the guy upper left, he rocks on guitar!
Thanks so much. I'll keep the comment about the guy on guitar to myself....I wouldn't want him to get the big head.
Great guitar work as usual!
Thanks, pal. Lets talk soon!
Nice Russ! I'll admit, I've never heard it until now, and it certainly doesn't sound like something from David Gates & Bread. But I respect their music considerably. They were good musicians. I'm off to pull the music now!
Thanks, Stan. Yep, this one usually raises some eyebrows when people find out it's a Bread tune. It just doesn't fit their typical M.O.
I love Mother Freedom and you covered it exceptionally well. David Gates would be proud.
What a nice thought...thanks so much!
Great song, great cover. Thanks for this. 👍💫
Thank you...I appreciate it!
I really enjoy your videos. I have a suggestion of one to consider. It's not of that late 1960s-early 1970s rock genre - but it does have a 60's vibe and a "man with no name" vibe -- consider doing The Theme from the Mandalorian.
So glad you're enjoying the videos! I'll have to go back and pay closer attention to the theme music.....thanks!
Ah, Mother Freedom, quite the contrast from their first big hit Make it With You. Man Russ, your lead guitar in this one is top notch and vocals spot on as usual. We like the same stuff, it’s just that you get in there and make these gems come alive. Excellent!!
Many thanks, Joe! I always appreciate your kind comments!
Nice job Russ! I never understood why they called the album "best of BREAD".. to my ears it's ALL THE BEST! never heard a BREAD song I didn't love.
I agree...many thanks, pal. See you Thursday!
Another excellent job Russ! The vocals and lead guitar licks are outstanding! Really enjoy your videos, keep'em coming, please!
Many thanks, as always! Glad you liked it! Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh yes this is a great song😁😍👍
Very talented
Very good. Sounds as good ad Bread !
Thanks so much; I appreciate it!
Thanks buddy, I needed to hear that !!
Any time! Thanks!
love your cover
Always like more Bread... awesome
Me too! Thanks so much!
This is effing great!
Thanks, Ted...rock the eff on!
Well done!
Buenaza!
Many thanks; I appreciate it!
Awesome Russ!!! I have to admit I didnt know this one. Great to hear you do someting a little more on the hard rock side. Those fenders sound awesome. Thanks again!!!
Many thanks, Chris. Yeah, as Bread goes it's sort of on the, "Whaat, that can't be Bread?!" list.
Don’t hear that song too often. Nice cover Russ!
Many thanks!
Good job old man
Absolutely awesome!
Thanks so much, Rob!
WHOA !!! All I can say is BAD ASSED !! I play for 60yrs and have really intensified my playing over the last year , and created a studio space …….. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION !! I haven’t been this jazzed since playing in bands in the 70’s and 80’s !!! Keep it up !!!
The biggest compliment someone can receive is that they have inspired someone else to do something. Thanks so much; I really appreciate it!
"These guys" are amazing LOL...Awesome work Sir Russ...makes me wanna play along, but I remember that I'm not able to do that haha...congrats and keep your vids coming.
Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
So glad you liked it; many thanks! I appreciate it.
This is so good😁brings back Wonderful memories 😍❤️
@@russwilloughby501 wonderful 💓😁👍
I was looking for a cover song to do, and I always liked this song and when checking out covers that other people did I came across your cover and you did such a good job on it I am going to pick another song instead
Glad you liked it...good luck with your covers!
Nice Russ! I wish I had a spare 20k for you!
You and me both! Thanks so much for listening!
gee, I almost forgot this one. It was really my favorite Bread song. Good work as usual.
It's definitely in the, "Oh, yeah...I think I remember that" category. Thanks so much!
Nice❤️
My new Hero! Dude you are inspiring. I grew up playing drums and have taken up learning guitar over the last five years. Been messing with video and recording as well. Thank you bro... keep up the fun and inspiring work.
That is awesome! So glad you liked it. Respect and lots of luck with your projects!
Awesome cover of a great song, as always. I'm a huge fan of your work, and your song selections are flawless. Surprised no one has mentioned Bread's other rocker, Let Your Love Go, which peaked at 15 in the spring of 1971.
Mike Botts' hi-hat work on LYLG is killer...love it! Thanks so much; so glad you're enjoying my covers!
Dang. Are you as strong a vocalist as David Gates or Jimmy Griffin? Of course not. As talented on bass or drums as Larry Knechtel or Mike Botts. Never. That's why this is such a great achievement. You pulled it off. It sounds fantastic!
Glad you like it...thanks so much!
@@russwilloughby501 BTW Russ, I've got to ask if you've seen the vid here of the Bread doing this live on the Bread Is Back tour in 1976? For me, that blows away the studio version. Incredible energy. Mike Botts is killing it. The bit at 1:28 (and all the way to the end) is fantastic.

Is there any genre you can't conquer?
African tribal music has always been a challenge.
@@russwilloughby501 Well it's a niche market, anyway.
Not bad. But you’re no Mike Botts.
I've never claimed to be.
@@russwilloughby501 It was a joke, sport.
