- Oct 31st 1980, Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY
The Grateful Dead had put down their acoustical instruments around 1970 ... only to bring them back up here in 1980. Initially, it was a 15 night stand at the Warfield Theatre, SF, Ca (Sept 25th to Oct 14th). Then into New York City (Radio City Music Hall) for an 8 night stand from October 22nd to this Oct 31st concert which closed the whole thing. (You can find official recordings on "Reckoning" and an official Vault DVD for parts of this show).
At the time, it was arguably "another" transitional period for the Dead. Many of "us" were still into the 1974-1978 mode and not yet onto par with the "Go To Heaven" LP songs like Shakedown, Don't Ease, Lost Sailor even Good Lovin' (!) ... In retrospect, this was a hot period too for the Dead. Great fun and new energy (Brent Mydland was just 1 ½ years into the band ...)
And the band keeps rollin' on !

I was named after this song (: and I'm proud to have this song being the meaning to my name. so beautiful.
Holy shit I know a girl named after this song too, is your name Cassidy?
I was 20 when I saw this show. Came down from school in Boston. Went with my then girlfriend, later wife. Not the first time I heard them play Cassidy but because of this show, I had a vision. We said we would name our future son Cassidy. 14 years later, Cassidy was born.
"Ah child of countless trees
Ah child of boundless seas
What you are, and what you're meant to be
Speaks his name, though you were born to me
Born to me Cassidy"
And when he went off to college I sent him a note reading:
"Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by it's own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine"
We just named our daughter Cassidy this morning!
insanely weLL balanced song structure and melody. I cannot get enough of this one, chances are neither could they! Since much of the jam sounded a lot like it could have kept going through it's rises and faLLs for another hour! true Reckoning is the greatest strength.
My name is Cassidy and I love being named after this song! Love the lyrics!
My uncle was a huge deadhead and he just died 4 days ago. Such a wonderful song. Riding that train, high on cocaine. God bless the Grateful Dead.
My favorite version of this masterpiece by far! What an awesome set overall too.
Named my daughter after this song -- I know I am not alone!
So so beautiful...
If my parents would have named me after a dead song i would have been born crying happy tears
Quick beats in an icy heart
A catch colt draws a coffin cart
There he goes and now here she starts
Hear her cry.
Flight of the sea birds
Scatter like lost words
Wheel to the storm and fly.

I was named after this song!
awesome.....
Thanks, Lolo---fantastic audio in this clip!
05:31 Bobby realizes they are lost in the jam and they don't have 9 more minutes to jam this out so he shouts at Jerry ... "HEY!!!" then Jerry Bear transitions to the chorus and it works out seamlessly. Love it. These guys were a bunch of dope heads and the whole 'peace and love' hippie lovefest crap is an obvious fallacy but MAN they can JAAAAM !!
A few seconds before Bobby yells you can see Jerry looking for a cue for the change.
i like how bobby told jerry thats enough
Cassidy was my stage name.
@KarenTheRetroHippie I don't think so. I am looking for that myself. However, I believe this was released in an extended version of those sessions.
@KarenTheRetroHippie Reckoning was my first dead album.
STELLAR!!!!
that would have been my daughters name too!!! only boys
And to think I named my daughter Patience after a Guns and Roses song.
Estimated prophet
@ 5:33...

I jumped the gun and named my dog after it. Now my wife won't let me name any kids after it. Damn it.
That's funny we have an 8 year old we named her Cassidy
Wonderful song, but there's something weird about this. I never saw Weir look so much like he wanted to be someplace else. The heroin was taking hold of Garcia pretty hard around this time, maybe Weir just didn't want to noodle away every song.
