Not sure if y'all got the full meaning of those lyrics. The young girl was a piccolo player in her high school marching band and they used to read out the names of the dead in wartime. "One name read but noone cared but the pretty little girl with the bow in her hair".. And the letter said " the soldier's coming home" which was true. But in a casket. My hubby is a Vietnam Army combat vet. He and I love this song so much! Thanks again RSR!
And check out another tune by The Chicks too please, Sin Wagon! 👍

Thank you for choosing this song for Veterans Day. My dad was a Coast Guard during Korea and my uncle served in Nam. The Chicks can weave together, music like no one else! I would also like to recommend the Chicks Sin Wagon Live.

My dad is a Vietnam Airforce Vet. He and his best friend from a small town volunteered together. My dad came home, the best friend did not.
This song tears me up every time I hear it!
God bless our military and the families who have the strength to let them go and the courage to endure the long wait.

@Moon Lite, it has nothing to do with generation. Stop that nonsense. It is their first time hearing it, and they are taking in the music and lyrics at the same time. They just need another listen or two.

The Chicks singing this song always makes me cry. Fabulous!
Country acappela band Home Free recently released their version. Their video flips it around, with the soldier being female and the one waiting being male. It's very rare that female vets get any coverage. Their video makes me cry, too.

Cry every time I hear this song. My mom told me stories of her friends who had husbands/boyfriends who died in Vietnam. My Dad was a Marine during that time & did 4 tours. And it broke my heart listening to him & his friends talk. I once heard him say "the lucky ones didn't come home". They were treated so badly when they came home by their country & the people. But he was a Great Daddy and I am glad he came back to us.

Sgt Infantry VEV. Completed my tour in 68'. When I came home to San Francisco i was not spat upon or called a baby killer. in my humble opinion there may be an isolated case of that happening but i believe they used it to gin up the war, you know propaganda. I became an anti-war veteran and it was never about the soldiers, it was always about the war.

The Chicks are from Texas, and pretty much got banned from radio, country radio dropped them like a ton of bricks.
Their crime? In concert, Natalie Maines (The lead singer) said to a crowd that she was embarrassed that George W. Bush was from Texas. They fell off the map after that. They are back, but not as big as they used to be. The two sisters recorded a couple albums with the name "The Courtyard Hounds".

The Dixie Chicks were blacklisted by many country radio stations, received death threats, and were criticized by other country musicians. The backlash damaged sales of the Dixie Chicks' music and concert tickets and lost them corporate sponsorship. That stuff...not the name ...

I can’t even imagine the day when you had to wait for physical letters. The stress of waiting. When my brother was in Afghanistan we were able to text and email from time to time so there was instant gratification that he was ok. But there was also times he was out on missions that we didn’t hear from him. Usually 5-7 days. The stress that was on my mom in those time frames. And now that he’s safe the stories he still won’t tell with her around. Thankfully he made it home in one piece and with very little mental trauma. Bless all those who fight for those of us that can’t or won’t. That we remain free.

They had a great career going for them, but then they went over seas and announced that they were ashamed(maybe it was embarrassed) to be an American. They were understandably shunned by the country music fans that were their fan base. W didn’t do it. They did it to themselves.

Yes they exercised their freedom of speech, and they were not arrested, detained, or intimidated by any level of government. Freedom of speech, like all rights, comes with its responsibilities, In this case consequences. They openly insulted America, and a President that was elected by patriotic Americans, who, by in large are country music fans. You can’t go around ranting about how you hate someone, and expect that person to forget about it because you claim freedom of speech. They did it to themselves.

As a veteran, who was a wife of a soldier, too, we always have to remember those we leave behind. The families of veterans go through so much. They sign up to say good-bye to their loved one for extended times and to live with a fearful uncertainty of not knowing what their soldier, sailor, airman or marine might be doing at any moment in time. Meanwhile, they are keeping the home fires burning, the bills paid, the children fed and living as normal a life as possible. In their honor, there are two songs I would like to request: "Come Home Soon" by She-Daisy and "Sleeping With The Telephone" by Reba and Faith Hill.

And one name read and nobody really cared But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair…* She realizes he is dead and not coming home, and everything changes... and @6:27, she hears the chorus and realizes all the while, she thought this might be a song with a happy ending, but the chorus, was always about his death, not him coming home... A friend of mine was a doctor in Vietnam. When he and others returned home, they quickly threw away their military clothing and put on civilian clothes. It was a time when Vietnam vets were treated really badly when they returned. This song is great and, sad as it is, it honors those who had been forgotten for years.

Back in '79 '80, I answered the phone (it was a land line, the only kind we had) and it was a sailor who'd just stepped off the boat in CA (I was in NM) and we got to talking. Nothing came of it in a romantic way, yet I suspect everything that came out of it in an amazing way! God is GOOD!!!

I love this song. It gets me every single time. And I love the instrumentation and the way each individual instrument drops out one at a time until only the drum remains tapping out the military beat.

This song makes me ugly cry every time I hear it. Every. Single. Time.
My partner was one of those soldiers who never got a letter at mail call and he told me that soldiers gauge their own worth based on the amount of mail they get. Become a soldier pen pal, you could change a life! And those guys deserve it the most.

Thank you to all who have served our great nation!! Some are still with us today and many have passed, some in the line of duty. I get pretty damn emotional when it comes to our vets and service members and their families. Politics and BS aside, this nation owes a great debt of gratitude to all those who have sacrificed to see this country flourish. You will never be forgotten...thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Yeah, this group is from Dallas, Texas. I once stood in line at the Honey Bakes Ham Company during the holidays waiting to spend the gift certificate work gave me to the place to get a turkey for Thanksgiving, and the guy standing in line behind me talking on his cell phone the whole time we were in line (which was at least 20 minutes; the line was wrapped around the building, lol) was the Chicks manager. I didn't know them all that well back then, but took more interest in the group after running into him. (I only knew who he was because he said their band name several times during his calls and was clearly busy re-arranging their travel plans for that holiday season, lol.)

I just don't understand how so many reactors to this song miss the part about the soldier dying. The girl is underneath the bleachers crying, and the boy is coming home in a casket. For a minute I thought that Amber got it. But then it was like she lost it again.
EDIT: I just pulled up a list of UA-cam reactions to this song, watched them again, and 80% of reactors don't make the connection between the girl at the beginning of the song as being the crying girl under the stands at the end of the song. So they also don't make the connection that the boy at the beginning is the dead soldier's name at the end. No wonder they don't comment on it.

In general, The Chicks refer to their genre as Blue Grass, but that does fit under the country umbrella. I honestly can't think of a bad song of theirs... they're all good! Top of the World and Sin Wagon are some of my faves.

I still find myself calling them "The Dixie Chicks" as that was the of the group when they first started their career.
I grew up as a Navy B.R.A.T. and can remember watching the Evening News with my mother and praying that my dad's name was never read off for those military personnel listed as Missing In Action or Killed In Action in Vietnam. The news reports often times beat the officer that was tasked with Officially Notifying the family/next of kin.
I knew of some Catholic schools that would read a list of names each Friday at the end of the school day and ask the students and teachers to pray for the families during mass on Sunday.

My Mother is a partially paralyzed Marine Vietnam Veteran and me entire life has been under the foot and hand of so many amazing men and women of the US military. I spent my entire childhood watching men and women die denied by their nation, my own Mother's pain and denial.
This nation did nothing bit wrong to our Vietnam Veteran's! They answered an impossible call to an impossible issue...these men and women didn't ask for this hell but they still got it.

When I was in the U.S. Army and fought in Iraq back in 2004 most of my correspondence with my family and friends was through the mail and writing letters. We had email and phones were rare in a war zone but it was an option if one could get a phone card. We had an internet cafe on our base with computers to email or instant chat with other, but you usually had to wait an hour or two till you got into the cafe. So yes writing letters to loved ones still existed back in the early 2000's.

I used to write those letters. I always wondered if anyone got them & if it mattered. I am so pleased to know that it did.
I felt silly. That I had nothing to say. but my grandparents said go ahead. Write about your boring old day.
I wrote about baking cakes and learning to cook, about buying a VW bug and trying to fix it it up, about songs I liked and the most mundane stuff sometimes. I hope it made someone laugh.

@@theConquerersMama mine did make me smile and little teary. Getting a letter or two from someone you don’t know and they’re showing you their appreciation for your service. I remember getting a calling card so I could stay in touch with my wife and kids. If that person gave there number, I would have called them first to thank them. But I did respond to each letter. Over there, it’s like playing a game of death. You never knew if you were going to make it home alive. Through God, I did make it home.
