Mother of God!!!!! I do not care how many times I listen to this but it gives me shivers. As a newbie player (on my fooking great chieftain V5!!!) my practice keeps coming back to trying to replicate this sound. Dogs asleep, fire crackling, a little glass of something warming and off I go!!! Playing music I will have you!!!! and sometimes for spells as long as ten seconds or so :-) In a couple of years I will suddenly find myself stringing all of those little episodes together and playing a tune from start to finish. I care not...I am having too much of a good time just enjoying the rich sounds my low D whistle makes. I brought one to Lanzarote (not my new CV5) and launched a barrage of beautiful notes (in no particular order but something akin to the lonesome boatman) out into the stunning valleys of Timanfaya volcanic park. It brought tears to the eyes of more than just me. It is magic so it is. Shoutout to Phil, but also to Cutiepie.
How privileged are we to hear such beauty in this time. It's an honor to hear him play and attempt a semblance of sound playing his exquistely crafted instruments. He is much more than one of the greatest whistlers of our time, he is also a mentor, a craftsman, and a friend. Thank you Phil.
0:39 hits me in the feels like a freight train……and the rest of it does as well. I love the fact that on this video, if you go to scrub through the “most replayed graph” just shows a pretty flat line across the whole thing……i.e. most replayed = all of it.
Ok, here's how it's done. First, for two weeks take the biggest breaths you can, completly fill your lungs. Second, pick notes one the whistle and practice holding that note with one lungful of air and time it..........then repeat 100 times. You will be light headed and taken into a higher mental space due to lake of oxygen but thats cool. I call it " the zone " It takes about 2 weeks to get it under control, then find a toon to try it on. I didn't pick MMDew, I didn't know it at all, I may have heard it a few time in the last 20 years. But I did the above and it seemed to work. So, many thanks guys for you kind words, it's not impossible, I did it..LOL
Dear God man! What are you doing to us!? This is so incredibly beautiful. The twists. The curves. The stretches. My body and my heart are awed and floored! Thank you 🙏
Finally got a low whistle (best birthday gift ever by the way), and came accross your tutorials while looking for tips to play. A first huge thanks for those, which are more than helpful ! Then looking through your channel I came accross this video, and now I just can't find the words to express what feelings that triggered. So I'll just go with "thank you", hoping you'll get how amazed and breathless I am right now, split between a need to cry and what feels like an everlasting smile on my face. Thank you. Really.
Your mind maybe somewhere else, counting words, counting rythm, counting notes. The result though is something you did not probably expect. It lifts my soul. Thank you
HEAVENLY BEAUTIFUL .. Please NEVER STOP PERFORMING. This is your super beautiful duty on this bleeding wretched planet !!! BLESSINGS! (Love your choice of a synthesizer sounds, and your fantastic sense of harmony- My very old synthesizer has these sounds.. will never give it away!)
Glad you've had your hair cut, Phil... the missus was worryin' for you. I note that this is a rehearsal, please, could you deliver the real thing. It is truly outstanding. My best wishes.
That is one tough, long lung workout. Knock out composition. This is not easy but the voice of it is so worth the effort to get there. Thanks for sharing and for all you do to make this sound and instrument more available to the broader public worldwide.
Hello Phil, I just found your channel and it was shared by a friend. I must say that I am really loving each and every glorious note you play! I am always up before the sun and love to watch it come up (my favorite time of the day). This is the perfect ode to any day and a beautiful way to begin with a cleansing breath and positive attitude. I subscribed to your channel. Really, really beautiful! ~Jackie
You're welcome Phil! Nice to meet you! Wishing you good luck with your business. These are beautiful, quality instruments and you can really play! Loved it!
Every time I get on my V5 the cat goes crazy and climbs on me. I’ve noticed bagpipes do something to cats also. Not kidding. Something about its sound.
very nice phil, great half holing and whale sounding the staying notes , sweet , If you can do this again with the V4 and can pull it off with that one , i may just buy the V4, but i need to see the extremes like this on it , thanks
Hello Sir, I love this song and you played it wonderful. If i may ask you for your advice. I want to buy myself an Low Whistle. Which key is better for this song, D or F ? And should I buy a Tony Dixon or a Chieftain ? Greetings from Austria.
@@philhardywhistles oh, I thought a D is not for G or Em toons. For example in G toons could appear a "c" but in D there is only "c#".🤔 So I thought I have buy a whistle for every key I want to play.
nice one Phil .I have an alto F Overton and am in awe of this flawless version which equal if not better than that of John mcsherry.I can just about manage a passable rendition of john's but need lots of practise.
I keep coming back to this as it is so hauntingly beautiful and having bought one of Phil’s whistles a piece I hope one day I might play half as well.Is there any footage of the concert mentioned in the description as I’d love to see some of that ?
WOW THAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL I HOPE WHEN IT IS MY TIME THEY WILL PLAY SOMETHING SO BEAUTIFUL IN MY MEMORY. I AM AN IRISH AMERICAN WHO SERVED IN IRAQ. PHIL HARDY YOU HAVE MASTERED THE WHISTLE I LISTEN TO IT AND I FIND THE WARRIOR IN MY HEART. I HAVE A FRIEND FROM IRLAND EMMONE DILLON WHO PLAYS LIKE YOU AND IS REALLY TREMENDOUS. I PLAY BUT HAVE HAD A HARD TIME FINDING MY ROOTS AND SOUL THE WAY YOU AND EMMONE DO. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST WAY TO FIND A STYLE OF OLD IRISH HOW DO YOU FEEL THE MUSIC ? HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOUR EAR AND HEART. IS IT JUST NATURALLY IN YOU? WHATEVER IT IS YOU HAVE A GREAT GIFT TO TOUCH WITH MUSIC. COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT SCALE WHISTLE YOUR PLAYING IN THIS I WOULD LIKE TO BUY ONE. I SEE YOU SAID A KERRY PRO F IS THAT RIGHT?
The day I learn to play like that is the day I'll be celebrating (mind you, I won't stop celebrating , having fun practicing getting like that). I'm very happy with my Chieftain V4 Phil but can you recommend a good tin whistle brand? My ones (I have 4) all sound either too tinny, too squeaky on the high notes or whatever. Thanks - keep making the whistles and playing.
I guess I have a silly questions. I have played the flute for about 17 years. How hard is it to switch to an instrument that isn't chromatic? I've been wanting to buy a low whistle for several years, but I'm worried I won't be a fan. The sound is so beautiful, this sound is why I started playing the flute, but it just doesn't have the same timbre
Awesome. It touch my soul deep.. I have a low whistle from Susato low d. Would it be possible to play on it? I have some problem to reach the highest tones! /jonny
Thank you. I think I'll save money for the Optima when I find work again. I love the sound of low D. I have a tin whistle now, but I'd like to get a low sound like this.

Attempt a semblance of sound? There's no attempt and the sound is breathtaking. I don't know where that came from.

This is quite beautiful and aspirational as a newbie to the low whistle. Can you point to a source that features tabs.....
Sorry, there is now source tabs for this.
You can find several settings of this tune (and many others) in ABC format as well as traditional sheet music on www.thesession.org.
Can you tell me what mark of flute he's using? Specifying tuning and mark would be helpful
Amaizing, congratulations. it sound great. Please can you say me where can i find the backing music for this song? Thanks a lot
B Track not available.
fabuloso !!! tengo un low whistle en fa ... algun tutorial para aprender un poco? saludos desde argentina :)

+pajken68 Hi, you will need a really good whistle to perform this sort of tune.
+Phil Hardy
Thank's. Well guess i have to look for a better one. Here in sweden we don't have so much to choose about tin whistles..
This is a nice piece. By the way, does the Kerry Optima come in two (or 3) pieces or is it all in one piece? And how is it shipped overseas? Thanks.
It comes as a one piece fixed whistle or a two piece tuneable and we shipped all over the globe, go to www.kerrywhistles.com/shop
