      @wet-read Conservatives are very open to conversation as long as it's in good faith. But yes, in regards to episode 2. Personally outside of the OT I would put episode 3 over 2. I actually think 1, 2, 3 got better with each movie. I just can't get over that lightsaber sequence between Anakin and Obi-Wan. It's the greatest fight sequence in the entire starwars series.

      Perhaps.
      I had issues with E3.
      Palpatine too comfortable looking as a captive.
      The mostly atrocious dialogue and delivery when Anakin tells Mace about Palp, and when Mace et al. confront him. The fight scene was pretty lame, too. Didn't really care about the movie as a whole. I liked 1 and 2 more.

      Matt is quite a bit younger than I am. I was 20 when it first came out. And the technology was not nearly as advanced as it is today. Everything was done with wires, puppets, cables, and sets built by hand by carpenters and painters to give special effects the reality that was possible at that time. When I watch those movies now, that is how I look at how advanced the effects were and remember the first time seeing that large ship fly across the screen chasing princess Leia's spacecraft. While the first three newer ones in the early nineties were okay, I have no interest in watching the new ones because there is no imagination.

      I’ve been saying what JB said for a while. Lucas made 3 (more like 2.5) great films, then was given full control of the prequels. People shit all over the prequels so Lucas had to compensate by himself shitting all over the original trilogy, tinkering with it, and sabotaging to make the prequels seem better by comparison.
      Second possibility is: Lucas’s vision was restrained by the technology of his time, which was actually a good thing. We’ve seen this a bunch with film makers. Jurassic park and Jaws are other great examples of less is more.
      I lean towards the first though. His over compensation towards propping up the prequels is cringe. Saying Hayden Christianson gave the best performance, freaking Jar Jar Binks being his favorite character, like dude chill with this nonsense

    Ben's not wrong about the 60s and 70s. The movies of that era suffered from cinematic innovation over pacing and writing. There's still remnant of that style during some of the scenes in A New Hope. What fixed the movies was comedy. In the early 80s comedy either in part or whole in movies became more family friendly, and the laid the ground work for the many beloved comedies of the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately, after 2000 humor took a dive again either not being funny, or being adult focused again. It's the humorous aspect that made Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, and Back to the Future work so well. By the 90s it seemed directors has a better sense of how to tailor a movie to be action, suspense, romantic comedy, sci-fi, sci-fi comedy, etc. It's also why the Disney Renaissance films were so popular, because they were written for a more general audience incorporating classic plots, top tier comedians, and top tier songwriters; now the crew is scraped from the bottom of the barrel.

    • @Guigley
      @Guigley 2 місяці тому

      That's a good point about the humor. However, Ben is completely wrong that the films of the entire decades of the 60s and 70s were bad. The effects of the studio system were still being shaken off in the 60s - and it shows - but when the 70s came along, American cinema came into its own. The sheer volume of masterpieces and classics that came from the 70s will likely never be topped. The 90s is probably the closest we've come since.

      @@Guigley Other than A New Hope and The Muppet Movie, I don't care for like anything that was made in the 70s. There are a lot of overrated movies from the 70s that older people like, because they're blinded by nostalgia, such as Jaws and The Godfather. In contrast, the 80s and 90s have all the great movies for me. I guess you're either older, or have a very different taste. It could be you like the slow pacing, and silent panning of shots that is common in those earlier eras. The 50s and before focused more on writing.

    I've no need to debate the value of Star Wars with someone who doesn't like it. Quite simply, not everything is for everyone. Personally, I adore the Star Wars films that I like, and really don't care about the ones I don't like. And honestly, the ones I don't like make up the large majority. To say that Star Wars ruined the movie industry, though, is ridiculous and simplistic. Historically, Hollywood has never been above pandering to what it sees as the sure money, and it certainly wasn't Star Wars that started that. And the audiences for other films didn't just go away when Star Wars came along. We have only Hollywood itself to blame for declining quality in the industry, and now, all of it's agenda-driven nonsense to kill it.

  • @Willismcnillis
    @Willismcnillis Місяць тому +1

    Klaven isn’t a million miles off with his statement. Before Star Wars, the 70s was loaded with really dark, challenging fantastic films that were also box office successes. Chinatown, Dirty Harry and its sequels and as Ben said, anything by Coppola. The early to mid 80s were similar. Ghostbusters, Heathers, society, fatal attraction and a personal favourite Tightrope. The latter being a massive box office hit despite the grim tone. The era of the sequels was well and truly under way though. Star Wars, Beverly Hills cop, lethal weapon, crocodile Dundee, Rocky. As you went in to the 90s, it all became about bigger budgets, and loaded with brainless (not an insult) explosions and massive movie stars. Cage, Arnie, Willis, Sly ect. You also had the birth of the Batman movie in 89 and its sequels in the 90s. Jack Nicholson started the trend of taking back end payments on big office which meant budgets went up and studios were becoming less inclined to gamble on movies that weren’t a sequel, established franchise or a movie driven by bankable star power. Skip into the mid noughties and that was the beginning of the marvel cancer that has left lasting damage on Hollywood. Budgets are insane and break even points are higher and higher. There are of course a lot of fantastic exceptions, predominantly in the indie world, but you only need to look at what’s on at your local cinema in the last few years to see how the trend has damaged things. When marvel was a billion dollar guarantee for each movie, they would abandon smaller titles in favour of adding more screenings of the marvel rubbish. Hopefully with more and more people abandoning marvels dn Disney, this will see a tide change to smaller more focused and well written films instead. Drew isn’t a long way off.

  • @patrickthomas2119
    @patrickthomas2119 2 місяці тому +2

    Matt and Drew are absolutely wrong about the quality of Star Wars original trilogy. They are fantastic films, strong story, epic lore, groundbreaking production value, memorable characters, aesthetics and music. So much worked so
    Well you are not bothered by some of the weaknesses of the acting (though I would not say it is bad it is not always great) and some clunky dialogue
    But I think I can agree that the film industry constantly trying to replicate what Star Wars did IS a big contributor to the degrading quality of films over the last 30 years. Films started to rely more and more on production value and less on acting and strong character and dialogue. I do agree with that.

    Andrew is being silly and he's clearly ignoring the dumb movies made before 1977. Going by his logic, you want to blame a movie for the blockbuster that would be Jaws. The 80's and 90's were great decades for movies, they had plenty of iconic dramas like Raging Bull or Independent movies like Dinner with Andre getting made. Matt Damon explained why the middle budget movies stopped getting made and that's connected with the decline in people renting/buying physical media. A movie like Shawshank for example didn't do well in theaters but became a hit on VHS.

    I got into Star Wars in my upper 20s as did someone else I know. And we fell in love with it. So, no. People don’t just like it because of the nostalgia of watching it as a child. I’d never even heard of it as a child. Now, I love many things Star Wars - the Originals, the Prequels, the Clone Wars, Rogue One, Solo, and yes, even some of the Disney Star Wars shows (Mando & Kenobi for example).
    That being said, Disney’s grip on the franchise and entertainment industry at large is ruining it, and the good days of Star Wars are practically over as are the days of good cinema. To blame its downfall on Star Wars and George Lucas is ignoring the fact that it’s leftist ideology and weak, lazy, and terrible writing that are ruining film & television. Amidst all of the terrible drivel Hollywood/Disney pumps out today, classic Star Wars remains as one of the best stories ever put on screen with charm, adventure, wit, depth, romance, and timeless truths and good values that appeal to many generations.

    I am a HUGE classic film buff and without question after years of studying film history I can state unequivocally that Star Wars and particularly Lucas and Spielberg RUINED film and changed it for the worse FOREVER! The demarcation for film historians should be BS and AS (before Star Wars and after Star Wars). We went from character based plots and storylines that’s required skillful acting and performing, to an over reliance on special effects and producers caring only about one thing- making the next BLOCKBUSTER, rather than making a film that speaks to people . Go watch movies like In a Lonely Place or The Asphalt Jungle or He Ran all the Way from 1950 and then watch a few films from 1978 or later and tell me they are even in the same STRATOSPHERE!

      Andrew does not seem to be a science fiction enthusiast. Matt grew up with an industry that copied much of the Star wars characters and themes so at his age, Darth Vader was not new. The Star wars movies started these characters which have been copied over and over. But before that it hadn't been done. It's hard to be startled or scared or shocked when you already know what's coming. Today's music and movies are all copies and remakes of the old classics. As we know they are never as good as the originals.

    Liking it isn't so much about adulthood or childhood but watching it now in the 21st century versus before. There are so many movies, series, TV series, and video games for people now, and easily accessible, and none of that existed when Star Wars was in its prime. The prequels only thrived on the curiosity of how the story would connect and continue, but while trailblazing new visual effects techniques that were used in better quality films.

    I don't think nostalgia has anything to do with it. There are movies and tv shows I loved as a kid, but when I watch them as an adult, I don't enjoy them as much because I see all the flaws now, some I can't watch at all because they make me cringe.
    So, their complaints were the acting and laser swords? The ones who can use the Force use the lightsabers. That's the point. They need to be in tune with that higher power to wield it effectively. If they used some higher level technology, then anyone in this universe could use the technology, which would be pointless. They complain Star Wars dumbed down the movies, and then they want to dumb them down further? It was supposed to be "simple." The whole point is that the Jedi shed all the trappings of modern life and take the time and effort to listen to a higher power and let it guide them. A simpler life and a simpler weapon for defense.
    Stars Wars didn't dumb down the movies, the movies and tv shows that followed it did. They didn't pay attention to what made Star Wars successful. The industry just said, "Make space movies and shows," and "We need more action scenes." They tried to find "the magic formula." Just look at the Sequel Trilogy. This is why it didn't go over well. There was no real storytelling, no character development, and enough plot holes to make a collander look watertight.

    George Lucas created the Star Wars, Indiana Jones IPs et al. for the young and the young at heart, and entrusted it to the company that seemed best suited to protect and carry them into the future - Disney. Okay, so that didn't turn out so well, but now the original films are treated as masterpieces (on story telling and character arc development) in comparison to the recent sequels. In handing Lucasfilm over to KK and Disney, he (ultimately) simultaneously destroyed his IP legacy but enhanced his myth as a film maker.
    Andrew's argument about Star Wars ruining the movie industry is a non starter because the movie industry doesn't measure success by IQ points but profitability. For every Wuthering Heights there was a Bed Time for Bonzo. There is not now, nor ever has been, a mass market for thoughtful movies in the US, and those that succeeded at the box office succeeded for the same reasons as successful low brow movies - they engaged the audience (albeit different audiences in different ways).

    My 2 favorite decades for cinema were the 30s and 70s. Coincidentally, film historians agree. I'm not a Quentin Tarantino fan because I have seen the movies he "borrowed" from, so I'm not impressed with his work. The in-universe argument is that is precisely the reason why jedi use them. To handicap themselves. They are outdated relics of a bygone age where things were more "civilized." Now, I always took this to mean that kings and lords and whatnot had knights in their court and disputes were settled not with war but with duels. But the prequels killed that idea.
