    I just returned from Reykjavik two days ago, rode some of these beautiful horses. This video was hard to watch but I noticed how calm the horses were during the entire time they were in the water. Everyone did a great job working together. People who make comments about hitting the horses obviously have no experience with horses. The people of Iceland cherish their horses so much, they are treated much better than horses in the US. As someone who grew up on horseback living on a farm, I understood the actions they took to get their precious horses out of that cold water. They owner and others didn't hesitate to jump right in and help. Bravo Icelandic people. Loved your beautiful country. Hope to see it in the summer one day.

    • @jirivaltr560
      @jirivaltr560 2 роки тому +3

      Absolutely disagree. These horses were calm because they were fucking freezing to death. And no. They did not great job. They fucked the whole thing up as much as a human being is able to fuck something up. They deserve nothing but a spit in a face for endangering lives of those horses. I have never seen more stupid group of people doing more stupid kind of activity. Synchronised riding on ice. That on earth were they thinking....

    • @berenddevries74
      @berenddevries74 2 роки тому +2

      I completely agree! Some of the horses just needed a little "spark" to get moving. The longer in this freezing water, the more dangerous it would have become. The only thing I can say is: the people organizing this, should have checked better if the ice would be able to hold all this weight. Fortually it was shallow water.

    In my experience, Icelandic horses are hard headed but very smart. Once they trust their trainer the horse will go anywhere for them. This seems to be a pretty good display of that

      This video shows the opposite of smart. A smart horse wouldn`t have followed its trainer on something as stupid as riding in a pack over thin ice

    We had a case where people decided to test the bridge so they drove many trucks on it one by one and it held and then everyone got in their truck and started them all almost at the same time to drive off and bridge collapsed and many people died. And it was miscalculation of people, even though bridge held the weight it didn't hold the simultaneous trembling that all those cars made upon starting. I see here the same type of miscalculation. Who thought that it is a smart idea to march horses in one line over the ice?

    Calm down people this was an accident, they DO happen. Some of these horses are some of icelandics most expensive horses and have won many awards and the people would never do them harm. The plan was not to fall in the water. Someone had measured the Ice but the horses were riding to close together so it broke, it was a mistake and the owners are obviously very scared for the horses on the video. Some of you are talking about the girl hitting the horse with the halter, she's not hitting it to harm it just trying to get him to climb the ice. All of the horses got a hot bath after this mess and were covered with warm blankets. Julia the grey horse did not have a broken neck they all were fine but were obviously a little bit disturbed by all of this just like the owners :)

    Mmm... same problem as with soldiers marching in unison across a bridge;I think the group managed to set up enough of a reverberation through the ice by stepping in near unison, and down they went.
    Good thing that all the horses made it out... always liked how spirited and strong Icelandic breed are.

    • @sebasstein7014
      @sebasstein7014 2 роки тому +1

      Way simpler than that, they were just too heavy and did not bother checking the thickness of the ice. A very stupid action. So many horses and riders way multiple tons and that closely packed? Ice would have to be pretty thick for that. Ice can hold a lot but only if it is thick enough.

    A great video - and a fantastic teaching aid for anyone in a similar situation. Unlike most other comments, I was more concerned for the people as all too often brave people trying to rescue animals end up dying whilst the poor pet gets out unharmed. I was astonished how easily the people got in and out - but maybe that was because the water was not that deep.

      @nredfearn8367Ah, right, thx. I'm all for traditions.... where they make people happy, keep the heritage and culture alive without harm, don't damage nature and/or wildlife and domestic animals... All great! But when traditions are harmful, or even dangerous, both, to humans and animals, I simply don't get why people don't use their common sense and alter the tradition or abandon it when changing it isn't possible. It should not be necessary to say how ineffably stupid it is to ride horses on ice, more so in a row side by side. It was so incredibly difficult to watch the whole thing without getting angry because the situation was so unnecessary. I'm only sorry for the horses.(Only a month ago a horse in our stable slipped on a frozen puddle and broke a leg, was her death sentence).

    The first thing I though of was a chain saw. They weren't far from shore, the water wasn't deep, and the ice wasn't that thick. The horses seem pretty calm unlike the humans. They weren't trying to stay afloat and didn't panic, plenty of time to cut a path to shore.

    A diving horse is an attraction that was popular in the mid-1880s, in which a horse would dive into a pool of water, sometimes from as high as 60 feet! Now people think it's a great idea to sit on top of a horse and ride it on ice with 12 other horses. OH but the water is shallow so even if the horses fell threw they could stand and possibly get out. So obviously they knew something like this could possibly happen or they were just lucky. The poor horses were most likely staying where they are because of the shock of falling threw ice and having to sit in the cold water, not because there well trained or they are Icelandic horses and they can handle the cold, there not polar bears ok. At least they got the horses out, and I understand the halter hitting, she was just trying to drive the horse forward.. though when people are standing in front of the poor horse and pulling on the horses face and mouth..and some lady is hitting the horses behind with a halter and screaming after the horse that just fell threw ice, it doesn't do much, but please applaud the humans for saving the horse and jumping into the cold water themselves, even though they put them in danger in the first place. I feel like there's a bunch of other ways to have avoided this problem all together, let me give you one.. don't ride 12 horses on ice.

    • @Annabananakaffekanna
      @Annabananakaffekanna 5 років тому +3

      Melissa Melissa .... you don’t ride Icelandic horses do you? They’re stronger than one would think. I know they’re not polar bears (obviously) however they are stronger than your average horse(and pony)
      You make it sound like all this was on purpose (about the ice breaking and the horses falling in). I can assure you, it was not. You also make it sound like the humans are “the bad guys”. Some of the people out there got in the water (as you know) to help the horses, letting them stand on their THIGHS. Accidents happen, and isn’t it just a good thing that all horses (AND HUMANS) got out safely? The people out there did their best and we all mess up at times... I am sure you’ve done that as well^^

    • @ChiyoriMizushima

      I completly agree with you. Putting horses on ice is a terrible idea, it's just putting the poor horses in danger, many people commented that "they are so weell trained icelandic horses they stay really calm" no they are just shocked and cold, let's not even talk about the "they can handle the cold", they might be used to the cold be they can't survive long time in water that cold. And yes the people hitting the poor horses and pulling on their mouth and face... sure it might have been the only solution they had to get them out but they are litteraly hurting the poor horses to get the animals out of a life threatening situation THEY put them in.

      The Tölt is a gate that prevents the horses from slipping because the horse always has one leg on the ground. It's usually not dangerous because the ice is thick enough. But if there are more that 5 horses next to each other, it's hard to calculate wether the ice is going to break or not.

    I am honestly shocked at how many people are throwing accusations left and right, calling the riders stupid idiots, and overall just being rude.
    Let's make one thing clear, there have been many riding competitions and a couple shows, ON THAT POND BEFORE. This is a thing in Iceland, and most of the time things go smoothly. The supervisors had deemed the ice thick enough for the horses to be ridden over it like they were. Some of the riders were even hesitant to do it, since they thought it was risky but decided to trust the people that do this as their job.
    Icelandic horses are not ponies. Okay. They are a breed that has adapted to harsh conditions and are very powerful creatures. Still, being stuck in ice cold water can be extremely dangerous. In cases where horses go on ice and it breaks they are very unlikely to get out alive if no humans are present. This happened last winter or the winter before that I believe, a group of horses was driven out onto a frozen pond in a storm. The ice broke not so far away from land and all horses died. They fight like hell for a couple of minutes, but eventually give up and accept death. This is why the riders are desperately trying to keep them going and get them out of the pond as quickly as possible. Even if they have to hit the horses, that probably saved their lives. If horse and rider are working towards the same goal, in this case getting the horse out the pond, it makes everything much easier.
    HORSES AND RIDERS ARE ALL OKAY! This was a couple of years ago but the vet that examined many of them is my uncle and I even went with him to check up on a couple of them. My dad is also one of the riders in that video and I have personally ridden the same horse he is riding he's still alive and kicking today and one of my favorites.
    It is unbelievable how some people can sit behind their computer screens and judge people they don't know, in a situation they know nothing about. Think before you start attacking a group of people based on what you assume about them.
    Just needed to get that out of my system....

      I don't know all the facts but I do know that ice horse racing is common in MANY parts of the world where its much colder.
      They have people determining if its safe to ride, but if you look at the start all but one horse fell in and the horse that didn't fall was separated from the pack, the most likely cause is that the ice melted slightly during the day, and the group were too close together, if they had been spread out more the outcome may have been different.
      But at the end of the day, this is Iceland they have there own traditions etc as does every country. I guarantee that your countries will do something that other parts of the world will find completely outrageous and stupid, but its your traditions so we keep it to ourself.
      And to end I will say, just keep your mouth shut, it's pointless. Ice racing is a common activity in many countries, all that matters is they were ready and prepared INCASE of this outcome.

    A fantastic rescue, the people and horses handled themselves calmly! - But, I don't understand why they would ride 12 horses on ice. Each horse weights at least 1,000.00 or more. That's a lot of weight on ice and I didn't add the weight of the horses owners. I believe no one thought of that! - I'm very happy no one got killed or seriously injured.

    • @florencebaribeau2971

      +Florence Baribeau to +ImaginaryBreakfast, I thank you to informing me that it rarely happens. But, I feel it's stressful for the horses going through that ordeal when they crack then fall in the icy waters, that's very dangerous!
      This time no horse or rider got hurt but it's still a high risk, they should consider to perform their stuff in a safer area! With ice their's always that possibility of cracking the ice.

I know why they do this, "cause they want the horse to be more raised up and beautiful" but i saw how much pain that horse was in, his jaw was like touching his neck!? Like wtf is wrong with ppl, hurting they're horses like that? Next time i see this, im gonna take action, and if u see animal abuse, You should take action to. :(
