Working On and Playing With The '93 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Station Wagon

  • For those few in the crowd who didn't know or were possibly doubting me...I went and did something that was, shall we say, a bit "capricious". I just love my new old Road Sofa. It's one of a little over 10,600 Caprice-branded station wagon body models made in 1993. This one was assembled at GM's Willow Run plant in early 1993 (probably not too long before it closed).
My brother and I changed the oil and greased parts of the undercarriage this time around. Next up is the air filter, as the currently installed one is filthy. For an Illinois car that's nearly 20 years old, the condition is not bad. Front brakes, exhaust work and new shock absorbers are next.
I find the car more than fast enough for my needs (not having anything to do with OptiSpark is also a real plus!), yet the Grand Marquis is likely faster because it's lighter, has an engine that develops more power and has a newer fuel injection system on it. (It does appear that the L05 develops more torque than the 4.6L Modular V8. Where this happens for each engine is not known.) I also didn't feel the need to flog the poor old engine in this car senseless in an effort to outrun the Keykeeper.
The horsepower rating for the L05 engine was not carefully verified, so if it's wrong, it's wrong. Oh well.

Wow Bill, I can't believe this was 10 years ago... I remember when you uploaded this, I was only 11 years old. Now I'm 21, and have a ridiculously sized station wagon of my own, one year older than yours, down here in Australia.

My grandpa (R.I.P.) used to have a white '91 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser with a blue interior that had a very similar body style to this station wagon. Seeing this certainly brings back some memories. The back seat was fun to sit in and face the rear windshield. Also, the rear tailgate could open downward like a truck tailgate, or could swing open like a door. If I remember right, I think the rear window may have been a hatch thing that lifted up.

this is imo one of the best engineered vehicles ever made. very reliable, very comfortable, durable and safe, good performing and good fuel economy. the good aerodynamics helped this vehicle a lot in fuel economy. by well engineered, i mean it served it's intended purpose very very well.
this vehicle was in a far different class from your mother's Taurus wagon. i wanted one very badly at the time they were new but did not have the money to spring for a new one or even a good used one.
this is certainly one of my "dream cars".

LOL, same thing here in California! No rust, but the clear coat on all the new cars gets burnt off and you get the trunk and hood with ugly spots while the side of the car still looks shiny and nice.

Hi there uxwbill, I allways have the oil filter changed every service and I get my cars serviced every 6 months even if I have not done the distance recommended.
A old mechanic told me oil is cheap motors are not, and encouraged me to change the oil regularly and if I travelled on dusty roads more often and clean or replace the air filter more often. It was easy when I could do those things myself and at the time I bought filters wholesale as well.

Great to see you taking care of it already Bill...Respect to the KK for his efforts and being a thoroughly nice guy!
I do think its a crying shame that vehicle manufacturers in the US pay no attention to under body protection! They make great cars and quality engines and then consign them to a fate of rustication! Nice to see a plastic gas tank though

Man I love those cars. I am from Europe but i find American cars, especially big sedans like your Caprice fascinating. Good looking, comfortable, great sounding and reliable. You seem to love your car, but I can't help but feel that those cars are a bit under appreciated in America. They will soon be classics. New cars don't have that charm.

This is a beautiful car. I'm glad to see you got hold of it. We had an old 1977 Mercury Marquis wagon when I was very little. After that we had full size vans, but I'm still fond of wagons.
Rust puts my hair on end, ever since losing my old IL car to a rotted frame I'm just really paranoid about it. I'd have to go through that car with a sander and Por15 or something.

The compass on the dash really completes the image of a nice family truckster, I can hear the Lindsay Buckingham music playing now. If you haven't heard of POR-15, I would look into that for all the rust underneath. 'POR' stands for 'Paint Over Rust.' You don't need to get it down to bare metal, just degrease the undercarriage, and paint it on. If you have access to a lift, makes it much easier. Looks like a really nice ride. I'm sure it'll last a long time with the care you give it.

I couldn't help but notice that the lift sounded like it was working pretty hard to lift this car lol. Also, for many years now, I have unplugged the coil packs on my truck after changing the oil. I then crank the engine with the starter until pressure registers on the gauge, and then re-plug them. Has never triggered the check engine light. It may be a little overboard, but every bit helps.

***** A Semi-automatic or one a them Dual Clutch automated manuals would be fantastic in a car like that, give you the luxury of the automatic plus the convenience, performance and fun of a maual gearbox to change your own gears when you want to, also if you really wanted to, and I know you probably don't but you could try adding a low pressure turbocharger or even tuning the engine up, I dunno if you can change the compression ratio on an engine I've not heard it done before and what benefit it'd bring for all the hasstle I don't know, but worth a look down the road and still keeping the car somewhat original.

I totally agree, the cash for clunkers program. Was a good idea, but was poorly written. Most dealers at the time thought it was easier to trade them in as cash for clunkers and get money for him and they did not have to deal with it. The cash for clunkers program was just poorly planed, and dealers took advantage of it. For cars that should not have been clunkers. Prime example this one. the word clunker should have been defined a little bit better.

Many of these were curshed during the Cash for Clunkers because they were worth $3500-$4500 in trade (no negotiaton needed) in any condition as long as it would move under its own power. Not bad for 16 year old (at the time) cars. Problem is that the govt mandated that the cars be scrapped, rather than parted out (parting is more environmentally sound).

Does he work at a Chevy or Ford dealer, I cant tell with so many different cars in there :P And congrats on making a 26 minute video thats actually interesting to watch, I cannot tell you how many long videos on YT I watch that bore me to death even before the 10 minute mark. And also congrats on the car, with a little love that thing will last you a while.

The 305 and 350s use 5 quarts of oil when you change the filter too. You got lucky in getting one of these with fairly low miles at 82,000 it should have a lot of life left.

Haha that's the same MPG as my land rover Defender. 2.5 Litre TDI only 120 BHP but its all at lower revs and there is plenty torque.

Of course the Key Keepers Merc beat you...In the overall category of road sofas the Merc is more like a road couch whereas the Chevy is a full blown road sectional with a queen size pull out bed, 2 hidden recliners and a hidden compartment for the remote control!!! :-)

I managed to find a 91 caprice sedan with 44000 miles. Haven't picked it up yet but I'll make a video eventually.
