Lived in Baytown when Carla hit. I was to young to realize how dangerous it was. We lived about 200 yards from Cedar Bayou and the storm serge came to our front door. My parents did a good job keeping us calm in our old house. Lived in Houston when Alicia hit. We were on the north side in Spring area.
So this is actually a "Fifteen Years Later" televised conversation with that area's meteorologists and local media that aired in 1976. Confused as to why that wasn't explained in the description?
Carla WAS still a hurricane when it hit Austin with a distinct eye and winds that gusted to 100 mph. In my neighbor's yard a huge live oak tree with a diameter of more than a yard was uprooted and fell with a lot of big roots of about 20 inches snapped in two.
Channel 11 covered Carla live. Other Houston stations paid attention They added the map of the ciastlune to the radar screen Storn surge is the current phrase for High tides Hurricane Harvey showed what flooding can do to Houston
My mom was a less than a month old , my dad was 4 months old in 1961. They experienced their first hurricane when Alicia hit in 1983, my first hurricane was Jerry in 1989, I was 4 at the time. Jerry dumped a lot of rain.
My Husband and his family went though this storm. y husband ,his Dad and his Brother were in the middle of a mustard green field when she struck, that's where they rode out the storm in the cab of a pick up truck.
Tidal water? Do these men actually believe that hurricanes often strike during a full moon? Then again, I don't recall hearing them refer it as storm surges as opposed to "tidal water."
I remember Carla... I was just a kid... Places all over Houston were flooded after it hit... Wild crazy wind... I remember looking out a window and seeing a man holding on to a palm tree... My mom said get away from that window... I looked back and he was gone... We filled the bath tub up with water... cooked all the food up before it hit... power was out for quite some time... Streets were flooded... Living in Kansas now... Back in 2000 a tornado tore the hell out of the town I live in...

Holy cow Dave is young. This has too be one of the most awkward looking panels. Everyone is looking down and saying um.
"Holy cow Dave is young."
He was only 37 at this time, and weatherman Ed Brandon only 33.
From accounts from my parents and grandmother and older uncles, Carla was a monster!
Hey! Watch it!! That’s my namesake…😁
