Kazuo Ono, The Dead Sea

- A short clip of butoh's co-founder Kazuo Ono dancing. Date unknown, approximately 1980 (no later than 1989), from the documentary Dance of Darkness by Edin Velez.
Kazuo Ohno passed away today, June 1, 2010, at the age of 103. We lost a great man and a great light to dancers and performers around the world. May we all be blessed with a life as full and rewarding as his was. - Фільми й анімація
Who’s here after witnessed Nymphia’s outfit??? Gagged!!!
I was just reading AnOther magazine, and I saw his quote, and came straight to this video:
"There are an infinity of ways in which you can move from that spot over there to here. But have you figured out those movements in your head, or are we seeing your soul in motion? Even that fleck at the tip of your nail embodies your soul... the essential thing is that your movements, even when you're standing still, embody your soul at all times."
Epic
Nymphia Wind brough me here 😮
SAME HERE
We love educational runways
Who? Is that a drag Queen?
This clip has been taken without permission or attibution from my documentary Dance of Darkness. I really wish people would respect independent mediamakers and at least attribute the author. It is VERY DISRESPECTFUL to do this.
Hello, are you still using this account? Reply me when you're back :)
@@keyser1989 He posted that comment 12 years ago? He's probably long gone. 😔
@@stopit9280 🥺😔kinda sad if u think about it
You’re mentioned in the description bro
lmao
i wish i could reach this state of looseness, to just let yourself go and allow your body to flow with the music and air.
me too
a few gins or sakes might do it
Try smoking a dip sherm stickkk***
Crazy Villarruel I was about to say try ketamine. Lmao. I used to do a couple bumps of K before dance competitions.😬
Dance is life
I'm so glad I discovered this video and this type of art..... While the dancer seems like he's a spirit and not real I also found the music and the vocals so intriguing especially where the singer moans....it's cool how people can be attracted to something bizarre
His fingers elongate and sometimes it looks like there are more than five.... haunting and beautiful.
One of most amazing artists of our time.
Wow. Something I have never seen before that I have loved all my life. Thank you!
Bruh this shit is terrifying
Nymphia Wind brought me here
It's so beautiful & dazzling! At this level, this great master embodies & expresses such a perfection and an immense poetry.
Thanks for sharing this gem
Thanks for uploading Kazuo Ohno's Butoh film! "Dead Sea" was first performed in 1885, and performed 11 times total, the last one was in 1995 at Tokyo as far as I know ;-)
Beautiful! Thankyou
Thank you for this...
Incredible performance ❤ one of my favorite videos on UA-cam
This is amazing, what a performer!
Who else is here bc of Nymphia?
How did Nymphia Wind lead you here? I'm very curious.
Her runway. Such good art
@@fr_co Did they mention Kazoo Ono? Was this on Ru Paul's Drag Race?
yes last Friday
@@BobDeNatale0she used this specific video in her process video on Insta of how she constructed the dress inspired by this style of dance
Happy birthday Kazuo Ono, I love you.
RIP Kazuo Ono - i nearly saw you in Avignon in 82 and dreamed of seeing you dance ever since - beautiful fantasy
I nearly saw Jesus in Avignon in 81.
0:24 👌
Beautiful!🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️ Rest in peace Kazuo, we’ll never stop loving you, you were, you are and you will always be a myth!😭😭😭😘😘😘
素晴らしい。
妖艶で無邪気で。
一つ一つの動き、表情の変化に見入ってしまう。
こちらの体まで動きだしそうになる。
The control over his facial muscles is just 🤌🤌🤌
butoh dancing has to be some of the weirdest most avant garde dancing i've ever seen. at times even creepy and harrowing as in the case of the silent scream. Yet at the same time it's extremely fascinating!
Im here because of Nymphia Wind
It's really intriguing...very nice.
Oh shit, I watched it a thousand times already, and only now I've noticed that he picks and eats an imaginary fruit at 0:18 - this changes the way I look at this piece drastically!
Exciting stuff!
beautiful.
Magnificent talent. Tyler Lord Hamilton
anyone here from b e g o t t e n?
Me
Same. I thought seeing the original would ease the discomfort, but honestly it made it worse 😂
I LOVE BEGOTTEN !!!!!! not from there tho :P
Yes
Yess
pure raw dance art
Outstanding. Simply outstanding.
beautiful dance
Wow! First video on Butoh I watched was of a Swiss man at Taisha shrine. Very good... This is amazing tho! There were moments I just knew there had to be a greater connection to the music. Such beautiful and incredibly foreign sound to me
Imre Thormann - astonishing dance!
"The Crying Light is dedicated to the great dancer Kazuo Ohno. In performance I watched him cast a circle of light upon the stage, and step into that circle, and reveal the dreams and reveries of his heart. He seemed to dance in the eye of something mysterious and creative; with every gesture he embodied the child and the feminine divine. He's kind of like my art parent." - Antony Hegarty
All of these are nightmare inducing
Just learned this kind of dance exists/existed and I’m completely freaked out >~
b e g o t t e n got me here....
Who else fell into this rabbit hole after randomly getting recommended one of these videos?
Awesome.
It is like his hands, or his upper body have become his face (and his face an incidental part of his body).
I'm pretty sure that's the point
Beautiful
Oh, i feel it in my blood. I take the same sense i have from ancient greek theatre. Haunting and sacred, amazing!
wonderful connection! thanks for reminding me of the choruses.
phenomenal
God send him into paradise! He definitely deserves it after all his hard work in his life!
all dreams have a meaning.
My dreams:
some shit you see, you cannot unsee
is very beautiful
Lo adorooooo!!!!
Impressive and beautiful! But I will never sleep again....
My fellow Butoh friends - any leads on this kind of music here?? I find it highly fascinating and beautiful.

You're right. I apologize and have added authorship info to the description.
Does anybody know the artist of the music?
r.i.p.
que belleza
you can feel the influence on Ju-On The Grudge...
Vraiment terriblement beau...

Oh, my God!!
rip
no es el baile lo que no te trasmite nada sino el contenido que no te llega por pertenecer a otra cultura, el buto es expresividad máxima, cuando el contenido te sea más cercano puede que te cause un efecto diferente
Can anyone tell me the name of the piece K. Ohno is using ofr his performance? Txs a lot
Please! Can someone tell me the name of the song used on this performance? Thank you so much!
beautiful,
it`s all,

RIP
intenso, surrealista, reveladoramente profundo ... pero si me lo encuentro en un callejón oscuro me cago de miedo =S
intensive, surreality, revealingly profound.... but if i meet this guy in an alley , relly i would die of fear. =S
JAJAJAJA 💚
whats the soundtrackk???
date is probably 1985, at the first butoh festival
what you want me to say... honestly, i don't understand butoh. i know it's a kind of dance but i see it so simple
this shit is so fucking terrifying holy god what the fuck
this is what taking 4 vitamin gummies at the same time feels like
@moondogmonologue i concur.
adoro a K. Ohno pero me has hecho reír mucho con tu comentario, jejjee.
does anyone can tell me the author of the music?
god damn it derrick
@ironkatia I can imagine why it makes you cry
Now Eternal Timeless Endless
Hey celeste! your right about it being dark and scary but i couldnt find myself to get into it like you did. Eventhough its not the type of performance im interested in , it was unique. you should look at the orisha's again because their energy and festive costumes are so uplifting! and they also interacted with the audience so the audience was able to be apart of the performance annd feel what the dancers felt :)
Wewww
got here from b e g o t t e n. absolutely beautiful and haunting
Yeah, it really is beautiful and haunting. I've never heard of begotten but just looked it up. Definitely something I need to check out when I have a little time. If you are interested in Butoh, keep your eyes out for a multipart series on the history and aesthetics of Butoh that I'm working on. I'll be releasing it in a couple of months, after I finish posting some other videos I've finished recently. Thanks for visiting the channel!
@@BobDeNatale0 sounds really cool! i'll make sure to check it out when you release it
This is a fascinating video....I know nothing of butoh, and not much about Japanese culture, but I've heard white symbolizes death. Is that the reason for the all-white outfit?
The all-white make-up can mean different things for different artists. For some it might be meant to suggest both a corpse and a ghost, and so the body/spirit dichotomy. For most butoh artists, I think it represents an attempt to eliminate the self or the ego and so be able to embody something universal, and dance from a place of non intention. Even putting on the makeup can become a ritual, a meditation to prepare to perform.
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Medo é? Isso é Arte;
I'm in that weird part of youtube again.
This is terrifying.
My man was 80-89 years old upon performing this.
Yeah, amazing. I saw him in NYC perform when he was 93 years old, and he was still an astounding performer.
kiss my name, wonderful song by Antony. But I don't understand why the abum is dedicated to Kazuo Ohno..
