    Here's a tip; In windy conditions as such, remove the bloody shoulder strap! How much vibration does that create?

      in long exposure i agree , it will make vibration , i think with a shutter speed of 1/100 or more it won't matter as much .

    Thanks Nigel, enjoyed that. I've tried HDR thus bracketing several times personally. I'm using the Nikon D750 with it's pletura of settings, and find it does a more than accurate job of finding white balance using Auto1. I've only been at this for a year, so still tons to learn, but I quite enjoyed your video, and will watch for further one's you make for us!

    Thank you for this wonderful video, Nigel. It is so educative for Landscape photography. Great to see that you are still using the D700 in 2016.. Out of cusriosity, in the age of 24, 36 and megapixels, what is the biggest print you have done with images from the D700 and what were the results. I ask this because I see a lot of people focusing a lot on the megapixels although they hardly print ( me included).

    It is so preposterous of him to abruptly end it after simply taking those 3 differently exposed shots. I believe the post-processing part here is of prime importance, and he should have showed us the whole of it to achieve that final single HDR picture.

    • @marckriggins4658
      @marckriggins4658 5 років тому

      I'm new to DSLR, but understand what I believe the ratio to be is 1.5 xs the focal length for a full frame sensor. So, 10mm full frsme is approx. 15-16 mm for crop sensor... :)

  • @s3icc0

    if 35 mm full frame is equivalent to 50 mm crop sensor camera then how a 16 mm full frame is equivalent to 10 mm crop sensor camera?? It should be logically 24 mm equivalent in crop sensor

    • @avishapiro8592
      @avishapiro8592 7 років тому +1

      He meant that you would need a 10mm lens with crop sensor to get the same results he gets with his FF body.

    • @amanfromgreatbritain2348
      @amanfromgreatbritain2348 7 років тому

      because 35mm on FF isn't equivalent to 50mm on a crop, it is equivalent to approximately a 24mm on a crop.

    • @PatrickBoening
      @PatrickBoening 7 років тому

      If the crop factor is 1.6, then a 16mm lens on a Full Frame camera equals 25.6mm on a crop sensor camera. Ergo, a 35mm on a Full Frame equals 56mm on a crop sensor camera.

    Thanks for the nice video. Newer cameras, like the D750 have incredible dynamic range. Knowing that blown highlights cannot be recovered, i pay attention to the clouds. I also keep in mind that bracketing water is not pleasant. I love the highlight priority setting in my D750, and find amazing how much one can recover in the shadows, darker areas!

    Could someone answer a simple question for me. He seemed to be using spot focussing and metering, but then also was in manual mode. As he has selected the ISO and aperture, does the camera or the person then select the correct shutter speed? How is this different to aperture priority? If the person selected, how did he make the decision, was it by eye?

    • @screwge84
      @screwge84 7 років тому +2

      He would merge them to bring out the details of each exposure, which would create an HDR image. He could also adjust one of the images in something like Lightroom to bring out most of those details (e.g. lower the highlights, increase the shadows etc). It would have been nice to actually see his final image.

    • @chris_harry

    Dear Nigel,I'm struggling buying a landscape lens. The objective (Nikon 16-35mm F/4) you use, in your very good reviews, are according to other reviewers, lack of sharpening by manual focussing by mis-communication between focus ring and inner focus unit.
    The lens is primarily targeting the
    professional market and thus the build quality is accordingly high. The outer
    barrel is made of a magnesium alloy and there are seals for dust and moisture
    protection. Both the zoom and focus ring work smoothly and are well damped, but at least
    on our review unit the focus ring showed a little play: not in the focus ring
    itself, but in the coupling with the actual focus unit. When changing the focus
    direction, it takes a few millimeters of movement until the focus unit actually
    follows the focus ring. This can be annoying when trying to nail critical
    focus, for example in Live View.
    Do you have the same experience? The same counts for the ""newly"" prime lenses 20, 24, 28, 35 mm F/1.8G ED. So for me as starting (hobby) landscape photographer difficult to decide which objective to buy.Please, respond.Thanks in advanceKindly regards,E. Velthorstthe NetherlandsP.S,Again: I have read your reviews with great interest.

  • @19ghost73
    @19ghost73 6 років тому

    Given the "infinity"-distance of your subjects, an aperture around 8-11 ( = optimum image quality) would have done the same exposure with a lot shorter shutter times, reducing the chance for vibrations. Dito would the removal of the camera strap have help in that, too, esp. with the center column being extended so much. If You shoot in RAW, then the white-balance setting is irrelevant, as the RAW-file contains only the pure exposure data and the WB-setting is changeable in post-processing. Otherwise an informative video for beginners. ATB, Gereon

  • @MrTanker10a

    I must admit that this video is very detailed for a newbie to Landscape Photography...But it could have been simplified on the techniques regarding how to expose for the sky, water and other part of the scene. Your video has failed to teach how expose for various part of a scene which is a technique that is so lacking in photography techniques amongst enthusiasts like me...To the point that you have resulted into using the Bracketing Method which is just guessing the scene with a digital camera. You could have saved half of your video time covering that and your video would have received Thumb Up Vote.

    A finished photo after all the instruction would probably make me subscribe. I am assuming that all this comes together with an amazing shot. I say this as I jump around to different videos with ease in an attempt to learn something. What did dawn on me that I was doing wrong was the 3 shots taken at once instead of separately as I have been doing. Although I like my finished photo the clouds look strange because of the movement that happens between shots.

    I've fallen into landscape photography almost by accident. I found myself taking two cameras when shooting birds, a Canon 7DII with a 150-600 and a 5DII with a wide angled lens for the scenery while I'm waiting for the bird shot. More and more I've enjoyed the challenge of trying to capture amazing scenery in a different way whilst relaying the magnitude of what we are seeing. This is a great video and I certainly never thought of spot metering and to be honest I've not exposed for different parts of the scene either. What I liked most of all as a disabled man is that you took your photo from an accessible location. Thank you and I'm now going in search of more of your videos. Subscribed.
