I am 72 videos deep and loving every one of them. Having a conversation with the engineer would clearly make my day. I thank you for the quality videos.
This was to amazing! I love NS 8101! It's my favorite heritage unit. I couldn't imagine getting to see it stop up close like that! And I liked all the Executive Macs as well!
An absolutely awesome video. Heritage units are my favorite. Where I work is maybe 500 feet from a crossing on a main line into Radnor Yard so I see many trains but only 1 Heritage unit in the last year. Thanks for doing these great vids for us and keep up the good work!
Thank you very much. It's my pleasure and I have a lot of fun railfanning and producing the videos, too. It is very helpful to know when the heritage units come through and then intercept them. I often get useful hints from other railfans.
Great video. Central of Georgia is also my favorite. I live on the old C of Ga line between Millen and Savannah. As of yet, I have not seen the C of Ga Heritage unit, but I have seen many other Heritage units going to Savannah. Maybe one day, I will see the C of GA heritage unit.
Awesome video! I've been waiting eagerly to view it, and I must say it exceeded my expectations! Superb quality and sound! Oh, by the way, I'm the engineer that was on that 55E that talked to you at Jenkinsburg and McDonough. Thanks again for the conversation and the beautiful video that I can show my kids, because I believe this is the first video I've seen of me outside of one of my trains.
Oh, this is AWESOME. I'm so glad you like it! We had so much fun talking to each other and I loved to listen to your stories and also the technical explanations. I learned so much. As I said, it was an exceptional day for me. Thanks again. Hope to see you again!
Nice, I knew it was in our area again. It's my favorite heritage unit; maybe I'm a bit biased because it's "our own" Central of Georgia, but I also like the color scheme. I actually have it as a nice HO model and originally intended to transition the model into the original in one of the video sequences, but decided against it. It already takes sooo much time to produce these videos.
So you watched videos while waiting for ominous S675-30! Lol. I don't know what their typical frequency is, but Scherer has enough capacity for 5 full loads a day if I got that right. Yeah, 8101, I take it.
+mbmars01 That I did haha. I believe you're right, 5 is the max per day. But two each way in a short amount of time is pretty rare, especially with coal suffering currently.
man I love your videos. csx abbeville sub etc. the central of Georgia was in Columbus ga ( my home) about a month ago in the c of g yard now ns. great videos man!
That morning I chased a southbound grain train, forget the id but it had a trio of SD60s. A friend of mine from Colorado came in that evening and I night clicked the 55E coming into Atl after having shot it on the SE as well. One south, then had that coming back north.
Thanks for the video. I have always liked your videos this one was very well done. Thanks for info on the coal trains I have watched videos of Powder River Basin wondering what power plants the trains go to. I appreciate your work. Any time is the right time to watch your work. I appreciate your work
Very cool! Thank you. I like trains, I like video production - it's fun, why not sharing it with people who are interested in this matter as well or just enjoy watching the vids.
When spending a day at a hot spot like in Austell GA you can easily get 30 or more trains on a normal day, but this is really exceptional. It's true, 12 trains on one day is already a very good number for me, too.
Was I seeing things or was that special engine who's engineer you talk with a lot a little longer and didn't have some different things just behind the cab? And don't worry I only download when I'm on the Scupper I know I only upload when I boss is leaving me out LOL
Thanks! I don't know the answer in this case, but railroads sometimes experiment with different trucks. It has to do with suspension, weight, and other factors, depending on which tasks the engines are used for and in which terrain they are supposed to operate.

OK I found the explanation. These are GE Hi-Ad trucks (Hi Adhesion), which are equipped on some of the AC units (e.g. ES44AC in this case); the other ones are the GE Steerable Trucks. There's an excellent picture that summarizes the difference here: railworksamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8618&start=30
The SD70MAC paint scheme was actually called 'Grinstein Green & Cream', and it was designed not just for the Burlington Northern SD70MACs, but a similar version was also used on the E-units on their executive train. (FYI, the paint scheme was designed by a young man named Andy Fletcher... who also happened to design the paint schemes for the entire NS heritage fleet, including the Central of Georgia 8101!)
Hey mbmars01 it's a very long time to see a CSX. Put the Central of Georgia #8101 I never see it in my life and I saw Norfolk Southern like 3 times in Placentia CA
WOW _ great video--one I will be re-watching a few times over. :) I like the green / white color scheme vs the Orange for BNSF...which to me looks too close to KCS colors...thanks again for sharing your railfanning!
Would like to ask a question. Why do some freights have "pusher" or "slave" engines and some don't. I live on the main NS tracks in the upstate Carolina, and they don't seem to use them anymore. Seems I remember something about safety issues. Thanks for an answer.
It really depends on the terrain. It's not so much the added horsepower. DPUs, how they are called, also distribute the strain on the knuckles more uniformly. So in hilly terrain (in many of my other videos from the CSX Abbeville Subdivision you see many steep grades) heavy and long trains typically have a DPU, sometimes even in the middle of the train.
I have a silly question, why don't railroads wash their locomotives? I drive a big truck for FedEx Freight, and our trucks are washed once a month....Just curious.
This was the best video yet, since becoming a subscriber of yours. to answer your question, I like the Green & White color scheme, (AKA The Executive Units) for BNSF. I took note you was in another subscriber of mines' territory, Pwalpar, check out his channel. has lots of stuff from those two locations you visited, great work.
Thanks! It's kind of a generic impression that the most recent products are better than previous ones, but no doubt there has been a development. I know his channel and also that he has railfanned this area.
Hey nice video I have three questions though 1 Is that 9831 BNSF grey looking engine a older bnsf engine model or a new bnsf engine model? and what history do you know of it? 2 Is that HYWX 2661 a older car or a newer car? 3 I have a question about unit number 8101 what is the history of it? and why is it called the Central of Georgia for? and is it a newer or older model? thank you for your time
thank you for your response to my questions I had a question about the central of Georgia unit I learn a lot about trains from you hope to see you in Columbus Ga sometime.
The Central of Georgia Railway (CofG) was one of the first railroads in Georgia, founded in 1833. As with so many railroads through the course of time, it changed ownership several times and became a subsidiary of Southern Railway in 1963. Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western formed in 1982 what was to become the modern Norfolk Southern (NS). So NS considers CofG as part of their heritage and in 2012 they put into service unit #8101, a modern GE ES44AC engine, painted in the original color scheme of CofG. That's the story behind as far as I can tell it. It is very exciting to study the very complex history of American Railroads. There are several good books about this topic, which you might want to look into, given your substantial interest in trains and railroads.
+mbmars01 That was an awesome video of trains. The first train in the video had a creepy sounding horn, all that was needed to add to the creepiness was the train coming out of fog. How long does it take you to edit your videos? You must record a lot of footage of the trains and then edit it down.
Thank you! I know, the horn sounded awful. I can tell you, the amount of time that goes into the production of each video is substantial!! I record about twice the material I need for a video and the editing takes a lot of time. It's not only editing, it's composing the sequences, it's image stabilization, and all that. A lot of work... But also fun, even much more so if there are people who like to watch these videos.
I just realized that I never introduced myself. My name is Patrick and I'm 45 years old. If you get the chance to do Railfanning in Canada you should do it at either Union Station in Toronto, Ontario or Central Station in Montreal, Quebec. Both of those train stations have a lot of trains coming in and going out of the stations. Here's a link to all the Rail Yards in Canada: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rail_yards#Canada
Nice! I would love to railfan in Canada, I just need to find the time to do it. There are also so many spots int the US that I still need to explore as well.
The train consisted only of empty grain hoppers. Such trains have typically much lower priority than a manifest or even a "hot" intermodal that has to be at its destination by a scheduled time. NS #8101 was just a random assignment of available power to this train.
I use snippets of videos and put them together with a video editing software such as iMovie or FCPX. Saved as an mp4 I can attach it to any other video using video software.
+mbmars01 I was eating at taco bell in Jackson Georgia and I actually saw the 2 BNSF trains. Taco Bell is my fav. I like the cream and pure green BN Train although never liked the merger.
Lol, you really remember where you ate on that specific October day in 2016? These BNSF coal trains run every day. There were certainly many since that looked similarly. I really like watching them. Never get bored by seeing a coal train...

So a Powder River Coal Train of 135 cars carries 93.5 tons per car for 12,622.5 tons per train. That's 25,245,000 pounds of coal per train and this video has 2 full and 2 empties trains, so they brought 50,490 tons of coal to the Scherer Coal Power Plant, that's 100,980,000 pounds of coal. Man that's a lot of coal! You do realize how much it is until you do the math. Thanks for the video.
Yep, math is always helpful to figure things out. It's a lot of coal and I love coal trains, so I was at the right place at the right time lol. You're welcome!
They're shutting down all the coal power plants they can in Canada, going to wind turbines and such, but the wind turbines kill way too many birds and bats every year. And they've found that birds that fly around solar farms get fried instantly from the concentrated light rays. We've maxed out our rivers for hydro power and the nuclear plants aren't all they're cracked up to once they get over 20 years old. So maybe it will be back to coal with scrubbers in the stacks to clean up the emissions.
Charles Damery This has a political dimension overall. In Germany they shut down all nuclear power plants and in addition to wind and sun they build coal power plants again. Everything runs in cycles lol
The problem with the wind turbines, like large fan jet engines is that they can make you sick from the low frequency harmonics the blades put out. I've watched the news reports from Europe and they hate the things over there.
Charles Damery I know that problem. It's kinda cool sound if you stand next to such a windmill, which I once did, but I understand that it can be very nasty as a permanent tune near residential areas.

Wow! Railroad rainbow! This is one of the best!
Lots of color, agreed! Thanks.
I love both paint schemes
This was to amazing! I love NS 8101! It's my favorite heritage unit. I couldn't imagine getting to see it stop up close like that! And I liked all the Executive Macs as well!
I was lucky to pick a good spot and that the train stopped, which gave me time for "investigating" 8101. Same with the BNSF Mac.

outstanding very nice I really enjoy watching your videos awesome trains 😊
Cool. It's always nice to visit other locations and lines at times and to watch the trains running there. I'm glad you like the video.
wonderful video! i like the orange(pumpkin scheme). waiting anxiously for the next one. lots of cool motive power!
Many thanks! I agree, it was fun watching this variety of engines from different railroads.

Excellent video. I like the way you organize your videos.
Thank you. I'm happy you like the videos so much.
mbmars01 me too. No problem
great video I'm glad you and the engineer had a good time talking
Thank you.
Very nice! Surprised you got that many Scherer trains in one trip. Love the cream and green Mac's. And I guess the 8101 is okay too lol

Yeah, I loved to see all those colors (somehow in a good match to fall lol) and 8101 was a special event for me.

A cup of tea , and a good train movie , what more do i need , I Know more good movies like this !
For me all I need is a bottle of Pepsi Max and my e-cigarettes to watch train videos :)

Why are the trucks of BNSF 6165 so different from others? (clearly visible at 16:20)
Thanks! I don't know the answer in this case, but railroads sometimes experiment with different trucks. It has to do with suspension, weight, and other factors, depending on which tasks the engines are used for and in which terrain they are supposed to operate.

I like the green / white color scheme vs the Orange for BNSF...which to me looks too close to KCS colors...thanks again for sharing your railfanning!

Well up to your usual standard!!!
Great video ! I live in nearby Jackson.
Well, that's a great area. If I'd live there, I'd love to have this line running through town.
Great to see a great railroader Byron Jackson (55E engineer). Next time tell him to dim his headlight for meets. lol
Haha, so you know him? Very nice guy. Will do lol.
Worked with him
Nice!
Great video ! Smyrna, Ga.
Awesome, thanks.

Yes, that's an industry spur and the train is a local serving the industries in the area.
Nice video!
Thank you.
I like the orange paint scheme.

Haha, thanks!
does anyone have any info and/or videos of the controlling of the DPUs and the auxiliary lead units from the main lead unit?
engineer controls with a split screen on lead unit....
I have a silly question, why don't railroads wash their locomotives? I drive a big truck for FedEx Freight, and our trucks are washed once a month....Just curious.
They certainly do when they have regular maintenance, but I agree that they could do it more often.

I have a question about unit number 8101 what is the history of it? and why is it called the Central of Georgia for? and is it a newer or older model?

why was ns 8101 a low priority train?
The train consisted only of empty grain hoppers. Such trains have typically much lower priority than a manifest or even a "hot" intermodal that has to be at its destination by a scheduled time. NS #8101 was just a random assignment of available power to this train.
