OK, I remember a lot of Animax dubs from Animax Asia (I live in Indonesia) and their changes (the script is usually very faithful to the OG Japanese script, but they like to make weird changes):
Sgt. Frog: Natsumi calls Keroro "reptile" instead of "stupid frog" (or "frogtard" and "fridiot" in the Funimation dub) in the earlier episodes. All I have to say is: Dude, he's an AMPHIBIAN! He's a frog, not a lizard! Also, Angol Mois called Keroro "cousin" instead of "uncle" (but later dubs made her refer to him as "uncle").
Fairy Tail: Juvia gets a French accent.
GeGeGe no Kitaro: Many of the yokai had their named mistranslated or mispronounced (I remember them calling Bake-kujira "Ghost Kujira" and Nekomata "Cat Mata"). Also, they changed Backbeard's name to "Blackbeard" (the guy's not even a pirate!), and an earlier dub simply called him "Beard".

Turner had this habit of commissioning dubs of Japanese media and sitting on them. Their dubs of Ultraseven (also by Cinar) and the first Gatchaman were done around the same time as Albert and Sidney, but sat on the shelf for ten years.
Turner must have lost the rights to Doraemon earlier than the others. Which is sad; It would have been interesting to see it in the early days of Cartoon Network, before Toonami.

    • @otaddiction

I remember watching that! When I was a kid, I lived in the Philippines and we had cable with Animax included. I knew what Sgt Frog was before, but it wasn't until I watched the Animax broadcast did I really get invested in the show. I had no idea that it's become some kind of lost media haha

one sgt frog dub is the adv (aka those guys who dubbed evangelion and azudaioh) dub. adv made 3 pilots: one for fans (similar to the funimation dub), one for the mass market, and one made for children. cn liked the mass media dub, nick liked the kid-orientated dub.
but around that time, adv was going bankrupt, so they gave the rights to a sgt frog dub to funimation in 2008, before going bankrupt in 2009.

    • @nicholaslienandjaja1815
      @nicholaslienandjaja1815 2 роки тому

I remember that one! I remember these changes in the (mostly faithful to the Japanese script) Animax dub:
Natsumi called Keroro....reptile? Dude, he's a frog, not a lizard! He's an amphibian! However, dubs of later episodes had her call him "stupid frog".
Angol Mois called Keroro "cousin" instead of "uncle", but dubs of later episodes changed it to "uncle".
Viper (a cobra-headed villainous alien) was referred to as "The Viper".
Kululu/Kururu's voice in the dub sounds like an impression of Ed Wynn combined with Peter Lorre.

About Cosma the Invader Girl only airing in Alaska: dubbed anime only airing on local stations in one American state actually has precedent: The BBC dub of the 90s Moomin anime actually aired on local UPN affiliates in Hawaii for a time, complete with a custom Hawaiian remix of the theme.
(I know I bring up Moomin a lot - it's just a series that's very interesting to me and one that I know a lot about. I like other anime outside of it, I promise).

One I'm severely disappointed we never got was the alternate Yu-gi-oh Zexal dub. Unlike 4kids/4K entertainment, the people behind this dub's pilot were aiming for a mostly faithful adaptation from the japanese version and got some big name anime voice actors to be in it like Johnny Young Bosh. While Zexal is not my favorite yu-gi-oh series i definitely enjoyed the japanese version a lot more than the 4k version (which in typical fashion made cuts/edits/script changes that don't feel necessary).
The pilot does exist, but I don't think it has ever been fully released. There is a small clip of it from a panel but i think that's all that anyone's found to this day.

In a video by SailorGuardianHope, she mentioned in a video about lost dubs on My Melody’s Magical Adventure. She said that someone got in contact with Kuromi’s VA and they said that they did voice her but Omni Productions didn’t have any episode copies.
And that’s actually the latest breakthrough.
Also the Animax dubs are extremely rare as they were never released on Home Video and recordings are possibly scarce. So that’s why stuff like the Sugar Sugar Rune and My Melody’s Magical Adventure dubs are so hard to find.

There might be a lost part of the tama and friends dub by 4kids. There's an advertisement that uses dubbed clips from one of the ovas but it's not known if the ova was ever officially released in English by 4kids. The series also never got a home media release so all that we have are vhs recordings. I think the last few seconds of episode 2 posted to UA-cam might be missing as well because the video cuts out in the middle of a characters line but I havent had the time to sit down and hunt for another recording if one is out there.

Picked up Urusei Yatsura and marathoned its first 100-ish episodes last year (will resume when I get a better phone) so a certain aspect of Cosma’s localization took me by surprise... Anyway, I think there’s another rumored dub of the show from LATAM supposedly made in the 90’s whose existence is also unconfirmed (likely due to very limited airplay just like Cosma) so, while Doraemon will always be the king of this one specific topic, this series also has its fair share of lost/rumored media.

The playlist had 60 episodes. I didn't watch it because I thought it was a crappy english dub. The next day I was telling my sister about all these diffrent dubs of the same anime. In the Spanish dub of Magic Knight Rayearth the names were Lucy, Anaís and Marina, I always wondered where those came from, since the English dub I saw kept the originals, now I realize they're adapted from the old one. Many of those anime that dubbed just one or two episodes in English were sub-licensed for Latin America and dubbed entirely in Spanish usually in Los Angeles, like Hana no ko Lunlun, Time Bokan, Josephine the Whale, Candy Candy, except that last one that was sent to be dubbed in Argentina. Since anime has always been really popular here they didn't have the same hesitation that they had back then with it in North America.

@SakuraStardust I know i'm late (3 years too late lol) but there is actually lost dubs of a 90's anime that may also be considered lost to most except Japan. The name of said anime is "Cho Kuse Ni Nariso" or "Idol Nagisa" in some other countries. The "partially lost" dubs include English, Chinese, South Korean, and actually Catalan, too! (some Catalan clips have been found recently though!) It's really cute! The synopsis is: Nagisa, a martial artist girl, pretending to be an Idol girl, pretending to be a boy, (Yes, that's what they say she is.) needs help keeping her dad's Dojo back in business, so she comes across a boy who is also an aspiring martial artist, and go on wacky life adventures together, all while trying to keep their Dojos together. The songs are AMAZING (but don't take MY word for it ;) ) and the ending ( "Third Love" by Junko Inoue, a City Pop song, album, and artist that are ALL very much obscure) is also good!
Literally, almost everything about this anime is unaccounted for/obscure! Someone DID make a video on it though, but I forgot who. But it's interesting nonetheless! Hopefully you look at it one day!

I was the programmer on the English language Sega Saturn game for Working Designs. I can't remember who was responsible for the English language dub, but I was under the impression that they had completed the dub of the entire series, which is why they were so dead set on forcing us to use their horrible choices for English names ( "Luce" sounds a little bit too much like "Loose" to be a name for a 12 year old girl, was Victor's reasoning.)
I remember that, every time they would get pissy about the names, Victor would stop working on the rewrite of the game, which is why it ended up taking so long. At one point, he asked me to handle the rewriting, but I was way too faithful to the original text, and he was looking for added jokes. I think Zach Meston may have finished it up, but it's been over 20 years, so my memory on that is a bit hazy.
The nice side effect was that I had two years to work on the programming part of the localization, which ended up with some of the most interesting work I did in that field, including:
    * a tool for automatic animation of lip flaps based on audio (replacing a previous manual tool that I wrote that used the Sega Saturn keyboard to manually enter them)
    * tools to replace audio in an already compressed Cinepak movie without recompressing the video (because we didn't have the source video data(!)
    * tools to replace frames of an already compressed Cinepak movie without recompressing the entire video (for the logo screen). This is why there is that strange dissolve from pink to white squares when the logo appears; Victor didn't match the colors on his replacement video correctly, so as macro blocks were replaced with the new ones, the color change became apparent.
    * a map editor that allowed me to redo some sprite heavy areas and eliminate slowdown
    * kerning in the text engine, so that longer English text would fit nicely and look good
    * a drastic increase in the number of save game slots
    * a whole set of command line tools to replace text in art and compress it to fit in the space allowed
    * an automatic system for removing comments from the code, running it through (the then very rudimentary) machine translation, and then reinserting them into the code
    * a tool called "Cat's Eye: Professional Art Thief" that let one browse binary files looking for game art in various formats
    * bug fixes to the original game
and so many other little things. It may have been one of the last games to come out for the Sega Saturn, but I still feel like it was one of the best things on that platform, and certainly the best thing I worked on at Working Designs. Having two years to polish it really helped!
The manga, anime, and game had the funding and full support of Sega of Japan behind them, during a period when they were really a powerhouse in that market, and it really shows in the quality of the product they put out. It is a shame they couldn't have done a better job with the US dub that they were trying to sell and get it on TV.

I randomly stumbled upon this video just now, and I actually watched Idaten Jump raw about a month ago for Japanese practice. Looking at the episodes of the English dub they released for comparison, it was really strange. So Hasbro claims they wanted to make a franchise out of this, but for some reason they structured the 26 episodes really weirdly. The show has an on going story, but each episode tends to feel quite self contained except for the final stretch of episodes near the end. For some reason, Hasbro decided with the dub to combine the early episodes. I noticed episode 1 of the dub actually includes scenes from the first two episodes of the Japanese version, leading it to feel very fast and cut weirdly. Then I looked at another episode from later on that they have the dub of, and this one actually didn't combine episodes. So what I suspect they did was try to turn the first 32 episodes into 26 episodes.
See, the general story of Idaten Jump is that Shou (the main boy) and his friends are transported to another world, and they need to win these races with other MTB riders to collect 10 gold emblems to go back home. The goal in the first half is to get to X City, which may contain leads on how to get back home (i.e.: what exactly to do with those 10 emblems as well as other mysteries the show sets up). One of Shou's classmates has taken over X City and wrecked havoc, and has started this biking tournament where Shou and his friends have to enter it to try to win the emblems offered as a prize and save X City. This arc ends at episode 32 in the Japanese version, and then after that there's a new story arc. What I suspect happened is that Cartoon Network only ordered the broadcasting rights to 26 episodes or something, and Hasbro wanted to create a self contained story on the off chance they didn't get more? But I honestly have no idea why they would structure it that way. You'd think ideally if they wanted it to be a hit, they'd want to air as many episodes as possible.
Also full disclosure, I do remember the series being on Cartoon Network, but I did not watch it. My sister caught it a few times because she had to wake up early for school back then; however, we never taped it sadly.

The HG Dr. Slump pilot is actually surprisingly good, IMO, with fairly solid acting and a script that's pretty close to the Japanese version aside from some minor censorship and cut segments. I'd hold it in higher regard than their DB dub (or any of Funi's DB dubs before Kai, for that matter). Would be neat to see the Animax dub pop up if, say, Discotek were to ever release the TV series. Or maybe even the pipe dream of doing a full dub from scratch starring Brina Palencia. But alas, 'tis a dream.

It was definitely like a shonen rocket power where they looked for Jackie Chan Adventures-looking talismans/items in cool exotic locations (and they would use this motor that looked like a track and field starting block mixed with an AV motor from Air Gear, to charge the bike up in some way) before tearing off in some cool race that disregarded physics and was like...a slightly slower Naruto chase scene on bikes. 16:11 This is actually more common than people think. It’s speculated that most of the name changes in the Yugioh dub were made by NAS themselves rather than 4Kids, hence why they appeared in the Singapore dub despite the Singapore dub predating the 4Kids dub by a few months and otherwise being unedited. It’s also speculated that Tokyo Mew Mew got similar treatment, as it received a largely unedited Italian dub with several name changes, a few of which made it into the 4Kids dub (Mark for Masaya), while a few others got cut, but existed in very early promotional material for Mew Mew Power (the 4Kids dub), such as Ryan for Ryou/Elliot.

A small youtuber (like, "less than 500 subscribers" small) I like called Yui-Senpai TV made a video covering it if you want more information. I also made a playlist on my channel of all the footage of this dub that I could find (I'm not linking to any of these because I don't want YT to mark this comment as spam). Cosma the invader girl is fake, let me tell you why.
around 2022-23 I "investigated" the pirate tv stations and local tv stations around Alaska and other states, although my investigation was poorly done. I concluded it was either a hoax or a misremembering of the OP
1- a local station has basically no budget to create a theme, even less if it was a pirate tv station.
2- he talked about a show called "Family Affair", there's no coverage of Family Affar in any Alaskan newspaper (at least the archive I used ) the only things found were affairs of the state at the time,
3- he also said the show was exhibited for an entire summer. unlikely only one person would have a recollection
4- remembered 5 episodes with (somewhat good accuracy) for more than 20 years at the time.
5- earliest archive of any newspaper mentioning Urusei yatsura in the entirety of the USA I found was in 1991 in Spokane Washington, Urusei yatsura was exhibited in a film festival at the time. (the archives I used were Google's and Guardian's)
I think a Reddit comment I got summarizes everything after I concluded what I already believed "We have found no proof that Cosma the Invader Girl has ever existed. As in, we've found more proof that it didn't exist than that it did."
I tried to contact Turbo in case he had anything to remember or just to admit it was fake, but he never responded (he stopped using the account).
as for alien musibat, there's no proof that 195 episodes were done (moreover since there's not much footage)
but I believed it wasn't since let's be honest, it probably was a failure.
there's an archive of alien musibat being aired around March 2006 in India (musibat means trouble or disaster in Hindi) the confirmed count of episodes is 33
anyways good video majority of those dubs I didn't know were lost

Thank you for another great video! Also, is that a remix of the Great Fairy Fountain theme during the Doraemon portion of the video? 😮

Now I remember the bike anime I watched at 5am on school days! I could never figure out what it was. Now I kinda wish I had recorded things at that time instead of only on Adult Swim.

16:16 Oof, that's a big (and false) assumption right there. They've been hired for some questionable kids projects in the past but they've also dubbed fucking DEATH NOTE and a whole host of other amazing dubs. BIG misconception shoving them in the same catagory as 4Kids or Saban.

I know im late to the party but months ago i have asked Emily Zoo Weller if she knew what had happened tp the "My melody's magical adventure" recordings since i didn't know who else to get in contact with about them. And she said she doesn't know at all but she remembers clear as day voicing kuromi for the english dub. It just feels like this dub search has hit a dead end which is really sad.
